When I was a kid and we briefly learned about various winter holidays in school, I always thought Hanukkah sounded way cooler than Christmas: "An eight-day holiday where you get to light pretty candles, hang with family and friends, AND stuff yourself with delicious potato pancakes? I love it!"
As a Wiccan, my winter festival is Yule, honoring the winter solstice, the rebirth of the sun, and all the lovely light metaphors which come with that. I love this dark, chilly time of year because so many faiths and traditions spend this season celebrating love and light in various ways. Thanks for the fun facts list. Happy Hanukkah!

Me neither (and I have been Jewish my whole life) traditionaly all Jewish holidays have rituals and specific kind of food but they are not the main part of the holiday. Every ritual and food involved is to remind us of something in our history because as Jewish people we believe that history is incredibly important to learn and pass on to your kids the lessons learned from history is what made us into who we are today.

Thank You for sharing these facts. We decided a couple of years to celebrate Hanukkah because we think of the miracle maker our God and that He is the same miracle maker from before and today and forever more. Celebrating has changed our lives because we sit in a thankful time of trusting and believing our God will hear our prayers. It is interesting to hear your reason of celebrating 🕎🙏🏼✝️🇺🇸🇮🇱

I've seen a story about chanukah that says that the miracle happened because they went above and beyond by pressing new pure oil untouched by non jews. They technically could have used unclean oil but they went above and beyond to rededicate the temple and so G-d gave them the miracle of the oil :')

@@reflexionesdelabiblia6711 *Misconception: Christians should celebrate Hanukkah*
This is probably the most troublesome misconception of all. On the one hand, the story of the Maccabees is part of the Catholic Bible and Hanukkah is mentioned in the Gospel of John (10:22-39). On the other hand, St. Paul firmly asserted that Christians are not obliged to celebrate Jewish holidays (Col. 2:16-17).

Must be non-Christian gentiles who do not realize that the story of the Maccabees can be celebrated by Christians and Jews because it is part of the religious story of both religions. In our area, many of us had a Chanukah party with Jewish and Christian friends since it is the festival both could celebrate together. Christmas is a holiday, rather than a festival day, but it does not carry the weight most non-Christians or ill-educated Christians think it does. In the ancient church, the premier holidays were Easter, Pentacost and Epiphany, so the gifts were brought at the arrival of the Magi on Epiphany for the revealing of the messiah to the world, not the birth. Christmas became a big deal due to the Roman festival of saturnalia and the church trying to draw people away from the pagan celebration. In a both Judaism and Christianity share the same 3 highest holiday seasons because Easter is a form of the Passover, Pentacost is the giving of the Word, and the Christian liturgical season begins with Advent next week which when added to the Christmas and Epiphany liturgical seasons makes for a celebration of the new religious year in much the same way that Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot do a bit earlier in the fall within Judaism. Though liturgically Advent and Christmas lead up to the Epiphany, all of them rather short liturgical seasons. As Passover could be said to be the premier Jewish holiday, so Easter is the premier Christian holiday. It is a high holy day, liturgical season and the queen of feasts. The ascending lighting of the candles for Chanukah is also nice because each day is a bit darker until the winter solstice and Chanukah usually falls right before that or during it. I just love that we live in a climate where the festivals of light are all so appropriate to the time of year. Good presentation. It is good for you to educate people about the traditions you know. There was a rabbi on TV in L.A. when I lived there and he spoke every Sunday, I guess because his Sabbath obligations were over. Back then there were 6 billion of God's children on earth. He reminded everyone when speaking of the Shoah that Jews were here as the chosen people to teach of the fate of the 6 million for the benefit of the 6 billion. This applies to any lesson from any holiday for all to share in the understandings we have earned from great sufferings and yet celebrate with the huge joy and gratitude of remembrance that we yet live.

@@reflexionesdelabiblia6711 All of our western civilization holidays are based on old Roman ones due to the use of Greek and Roman calendars, but Easter is not pagan. It is the Christian version of the Passover, literally. It just happens to carry vernal equinox symbols of eggs and rabbits that call to mind new life, as in pagan forms. So Christmas kind of got elevated due to pagan Roman habits around the winter solstice to holiday status, rather than festival, even though there are those who think the birth happened in summertime. But then, Rudolph is really Rudolfa because only female reindeer have their antlers at this time of year. I was making a point about the religious meaning, not about actually historical evidence or symbols utilized. It is easier with Judaism using their ancient calendar still to calculate holidays.
