We just picked up a 1997 Jeep Cherokee XJ!
Both Cassie and I have been wanting to get another XJ for a daily driver for quite a while now. We stumbled upon this 1 owner, high mileage, mostly stock Cherokee not too far away. Now it does have a few issues, the AC didnt work, theres some worn suspension components, cracked exhaust manifold and a few other odds and ends. This is going to be a fun little build, keeping it budget friendly and comfortable for daily driving, while still being able to hit some trails!

Great find. I didn't know Wrangler Fix made so many different PCMs. Can't wait to follow along with the XJ. I say keep it simple and no larger than 31s.
Its a great Monday when we get a Cass and Ben video.
3 inch lift, 35-inch tires, 17-inch wheels better brakes, family camping rig. Great looking XJ. Have fun.
Way too big of tires for that lift height
I got legit excited it was an XJ! I have a JK and a JKU but my XJ is my favorite of the bunch. A mild/moderate build that keeps it well suited to street driving is a good idea, you can go a lot of places in an XJ on 33s
Thanks for the tip on the PCM seller. I've got a JKU in the driveway that needs a new PCM. - Keri
What year? I have a 2016 ecm here at the shop
@@JKGearandGadgets 2008.
Man I tell you what, I learned a lot about XJ's just by watching this video! An easy subscription. Can't wait to watch more of your videos!
Appreciate learning more on AC diagnostics
I like that you’re bringing another XJ onto the channel. We have a JLU and my wife wants an XJ also. Looking forward to seeing how you guys use it!
I’m so old that I can remember when people would say Cherokees weren’t real Jeeps. I had a 96, wish I still had it. I would drive from the mountains of North Carolina to Toronto, Canada which was 850 miles in 12 hours. Never had an issue other than one Sunday morning I was in Ohio looking for a gas station. The digital readout said 0 miles to empty. I drove at least 10 miles with it reading that 😮. Great vehicle.
I have a 96 red Jeep Cherokee country. Basically 100% stock in about the same shape and was looking to do some upgrades. This is hilarious perfect timing
Nice find 👍 33s and a decent suspension. Already got some badA rock crawlers. No need for another right 😂😂
Very nice. Do a nice 4.5-5.5 inch long arm kit, some flat fenders and 35s. Very capable and easy to daily drive
It is great to see another XJ on this channel again.Im excited to watch this build, just dont let Jack drive it ...😁😁(Jack is Cassie's little brother)
WJ seat swap this beauty. Most comfortable seats, they look good, and the best part, the rear seat has headrests to protect those kiddos in case of an accident.
yes! i remember the last jeep you guys had prob 5 years ago or so if not a bit longer
Bumpers, winch, 33's, gears and lunchbox lockers.
Love the XJ. I had a 93 with over 319,000 miles and going strong then someone stole it out of my driveway overnight. Man I miss that jeep. Since then I've found my new love with my 04 LJ.
SWEET!!! I too have a 97 Jeep XJ. These are considered bastard year. They have some stuff from the older gens and, of course, some stuff from the newer gens. The transmissions are a one year model if you want complete "bolt-in".
Looking forward to the build.
👏🏻 so glad to see another xj on here!! From a current xj owner myself. Hands down one of my favorite jeeps. We have a 97 that we’ve fully modified to be a decent DD but also capable of wheeling but still have a few kinks to work out but I’m excited to see the progress on this one for sure
Thank you for going over the a/c. That was great.
I had a 93 XJ country and boy I miss it! Rusty’s 3 inch life and 33s ❤
6inch long arm lift that would be awsome... then a manual locking hub conversion kit...that would save on the front-end with stuff rotating
Nice buy! Looking forward to this one.
3" lift 31-32" A/T. ZJ rear disk brake upgrade. 4:10's limited slips f/r. Upcountry skid plates. Basic steel bumpers and sliders. Leave it at that...
I remember when you all had yours with the Alaska plate and seems like you let some family have it. A great platform
I just so happened to have bought an xj a couple weeks ago. Can’t wait to see the xj content!!
97-99 are the best years for XJs. Mine is a flame red 99 had a 4” long arm lift with 35s and lunchbox lockers. Has been amazing everywhere I’ve gone in Arizona as well as KOH. All thats left of it now is the floor and firewall forward as it’s currently getting tons, 40s, air shocks and being turned into a juggy.
I've been driving XJ's and Wranglers since '88. The XJ is flat out the best Jeep ever made. It'll go wherever you point it and put a huge smile on your face. I'm currently running a '96 I bought back in 2000. I put about 15k into it and it runs like it just came off the showroom floor. I put 31's with a 2 inch lift and absolutely love it. It also had the Trac-Lok lsd in the rear when I bought it which was and is awesome. Like Matt from Matt's Off Road Recovery said, there simply is no better Jeep. Looking forward to seeing how you decide to build her out!
Looks fun! I had a seizure in March so can't drive till September. So I'm trying to get my Jeep all ready to go. Can't wait!
Welcome back to the unibody club! I love my XJ. Mine is 6.5” long arm on 35s, I daily it more than my full size truck. Fun rig for a family of 4, plenty of room.
I got 2 XJ in the past. 2.5L turbo diesel 115hp. XJ is a good daily companion !! 😃
Super excited for this build. The air-conditioner & ecu troubleshooting is gold man.
My favorite Jeep model ever
BTW what ever happened with the Bronco?
Yes xj footage
Back to the roots…….I seem to recall a story of Mike saying that’s not a real Jeep…….So daily driver….Ok…..so long arms….tons…..40’s…..full cage. AC and a good stereo. DONE. Daily.
😂
@@cameronhoover7561 That would be a daily for Ben !!! LOL….and let’s not forget the LS that’s probably coming.
Now that’s my idea of a perfect daily driver 🤣. Just a basic build lol
@@JKGearandGadgets Somehow……I see it coming. “but BABE…..it’s just some basic bolt ons ( ish ) “
Great to see an XJ in this channel! I like the mild upgrade to this for daily usage! Looks in great condition for the mileage and age!
I think you should stiffin the unibody, put JK D44s, 37s, and a long arms.
My 98 is on 4.5 long arm ford 8.8 locked n geared alloy 30 spline front shafts diy front winch bumper rear jcr bumper with tire carrier on 33s soon 2B 35s and it does great Recently cracked unibody Behind the steering box, so definitely go with the steering brace and frame stiffeners
I am so excited for this series. I have a 98 jeep xj, doesn’t work right now but still excited.
About time guys... Awesome XJ, yea. Aussie fan 🦘😎🇦🇺
In the process of painting my 1996 Cherokee, I will say that it is a lot of work, my clear coat was horrible. Looking forward to see what you do with the old Cherokee. I built mine for rock crawling but I could daily drive it if I had to. Can be seen on the Desert Mountain 4WD Club, You Tube channel.
Welp - here we go - HA! I bought my first XJ late last year and said, I will make it my daily driver and go "simple" - welp 8 months in no dice. Have done everything to it and welding a truss to the new axles as we speak. For 10k all in :) nope. I am stoked you got one again - learned tons from you in the JK years through the JT and now I am all about seeing what you do with the XJ. Congrats!
Oh boy. I think the 2dr xj are the best. Same length as a 4dr. But no door in the rear wheel when cutting. Ls swap 6 speed with 1ton
Love it. So clean
I love old Cherokees. 😊
Can’t wait to see this Xj build 🚗
Maybe create a couple of cool guidelines that limit the build.
How capable can you make it without swapping out OEM axles or cutting/replacing OEM flares?
That would be a reasonable limit on mods.
The XJ is the best jeep ever made!
Well go for a Hemi engine Dana 60 front and rear and give a 4 inch over stock lift would be really cool I think Summitt Racing makes a motor mount kit for the Jeep Cherokee.
If you dont want to spend too much for the tie rod, you can use the V8 ZJ one. it is much beefier than the XJ one. The drag links are the same.
Reminds me of my dad s it was a 94 but it was the dozer even with a bad radiator never overheated it was a beast smoking tires
Maybe the only Jeep that isn’t a wrangler that’s still just as cool 😂
I had a 99 back in the day, same color exterior and interior down to the badges. This one hit me hard 😅
This is the content I’m here for.
Great video !! Love Cherokees !!
👍👍😃
Dana 50 TTB conversion!!!!
I would love to see a daily on 37’s build 😁
Start off with a Rubicon Express 3.5 super flex lift, 33” BFG KM3’s, a set of 4.56’s, and a lunch box locker in the rear. Throw on a clean bumper and a Harbor Freight winch. Done. (That was my combo from my 99’ XJ)
I don’t even think RE is a thing anymore after the wheelpro/transamerica acquisition!
@@JKGearandGadgetsit’s been a few years 😂 I’m sure Clayton could do the job too.
Beautiful
Would love to see troubleshooting electric windows.
The exhaust is all factory not really sure why they have a big crushed spot but the header will always crack if you don’t have a flexible header a pain to change but worth it.
Very cool! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love XJ's, I remember when you lived in VA you had one and said it was going to a family member (brother in law)? Why on earth did it have adjustable control arms on it... was it once lifted and returned to stock height?
Good memory!! Unfortunately it got totaled :/. And no idea on the arms, I doubt it was lifted, it was an older gentleman who owned it, but who knows! I think he had an “XJ familiar” shop do work on it and they probably recommended the arms once the factory bushings went out, my best guess
@@JKGearandGadgets I had an XJ get totaled when a drunk driver smashed into it at over 100 mph. It took one for the team, the roof really stood up in a high speed roll.
Somehow those xjs are really nice, unfortunately all are rusted to hell here
why not fix the control arms you have already, they look like theyre from Rusty's off road which is a good brand, unless youre doing a lift kit that comes with new arms. im running a Zone 4.5" lift with Fox2. 0s on my 96 2 door, it rides great
“Weekend warrior”
I would stay around 31”-33” and put a winch
Heck ya
Looks like a factory exhaust manifold and downpipe to me
Budget friendly built, Just Empty Every Pocket,😂😂 🇺🇸0lllllll0🇺🇸
I remember the old Cherokee back in VA when Cassie was pregnant with the twins. Alaska plates. What are the odds? Does your brother in law still have it?
It was totaled :(
@@JKGearandGadgets 😮💨
3.5-4.5 lift cut fenders 35s
Never have to many.
You got a Cherokee in kodiak and this one also has AK plates but you’re in OK? I’m curious because I’m in Kodiak and the name drop caught me off guard
Ben, is that pic of your first XJ on poser rock at Uwharrie?
Yep!
Two thumbs up for Wrangler fix computers. Have had nothing but bad luck with the other guys, really really bad customer service on the other companies.
👍🏽🇺🇸👍🏽 nice addition
My 91 was a beast thing go anywhere
You guys ever give any thought to finding an older Jeep like this and instead of modifying it for off road use, fix all the issues with it and use it as a daily?
Kinda the plans for this one. It won’t be a full build, just a few modifications that are DD friendly and still “trail capable”
Cassie’s silver LJ has been a stock daily for about a year now, with no modifications!
@@JKGearandGadgets silver LJ?... you mean the JT?
Cass picked up a 05 LJ last summer for a steal, had rear quarter damage from an accident, had a body shop fix it up and it’s been a great daily.
Down in Houston and have a lifted 2013 JKU, 5 inch lift, 35 inch tires, that has a vibration and jumps around around starting at 60 mph and gets progressively worse with speed. New steering flip kit. New adjustable control arms. I've already spent thousands at different Off-road shops. Any advice?
What’s your caster or pinion angle at? Vibration at speed is going to be tire balance or a driveshaft vibe. Also jack up the front end and pry up on the tire and watch your balljoints
@@JKGearandGadgets Don't know the caster and pinion angle. Shop didn't give me an alignment sheet. What should it be at? Is this causing the jumping back and forth on the highway you think? I have a stock D44 front axle.
I think you are right that it is the driveline vibration because when I have a ton of weight in the vehicle it goes away.
finally a real jeep lol whoop whoop
Paint use a wide fan pattern, 50/50 your your passes keep you distance the same. Pretend you’re a robot. 🤖 watch the paint go on and it doesn’t have to look perfect the first coat it may take three coats. Don’t try to paint the entire truck at one time and everyone has to sand and polish small imperfections we call it dirt or trash. Do your research on painting.
Will there be any updates on the silver LJ?
Yep! Very soon
I have a 99 XJ !!
Are tons and 42s to far?
I'm seeing an LS or Himi swap. On maybe 39.
It did look like the steering wheel did shake a little bit.
Was that poser rock at Uwharrie
Confused why a stock Jeep ever had aftermarket adjustable control arms put on it in the first place 🙃
Leave it stock paint it an drive it
17:39 that's stock.
Your first Jeep was $2000
" No known engine problems ". Lol. The 97 -99 are notorious for weak piston skirts. My old lady owned never off road 98 TJ broke a piston at only 72,000 miles, and I've rebuilt and built strokers for around a dozen friends and club members who suffered the same failure.
Your content is awesome! ! can I collaborate with you?
