Adding Sparks To Flash Powder

  • Flash powders typically will cause some sparks to fly. To try and magnify this visually appealing look, six experimental metals and oxidizers were placed on top of a pile of standard flash powder and lit. The results varied quite a bit but magnesium and titanium seem to come out on top.

    Try ferrocerium (mischmetal) powder. Ferrocerium is used in butane lighters as "flint"

      Also calcium makes interesting effect, and it's safer than sodium

      Ferrocerium just goes way too fast, I’ve used the shavings just to make flash before, but you don’t really get a bright light flash really just a pop, the ferrocerium doesn’t really emit any light, I can send you a video of a half gram ferrocerium flash firecracker if you want

    That’s really cool! The metal I really want to try is zirconium, it’s used in military incendiary rounds.

      It makes very strong flash powder. It's also used in old school single use flash bulbs.

      Yes, Zirconium airsoft pellets spark against metallic objects, like cars. Would be very cool.

      Цирконий 28% с PbO2 72%+ 2%nc(+100%) даже сильно запрессованный в пластмассовую трубку 2.5мм взрывает 0.025 с/м.

    Such a nice and specially the kmno4 make more boom sound

      Yup fine kmno4 plus magnesium makes rather strong flash powder. It can not take friction though it is too sensitive to mix with any pressure.

    Was the bonus magnesium and aluminum? Reminds me of the results I had with those 2. Great times man, thank you for all your time and work! 🎉❤

    Magnesium gives great sparks but only if your mix make "puff". If it makes "boom" like fireckracker magnesium shavings burns instantly, no sparks just bright flash.

      Titanium will do

    • @cranialconstruction2218
      @cranialconstruction2218  4 місяці тому

      Magnesium shavings only burn slowly relative to the powder. Even with a boom. They are ~1 inch long, and although coiled up due to the drill bit, take time to burn. They are initially lit with the "boom" then get shot out as sparks.

      So try fireckracker with magnesium shavings. I tried, it doesnt give beautiful sparks, just flashbang.

    Nothing like some titanium or zirconium sponge. Might need a perchlorate to light the zirconium though.
    One thing. I would be nervous as hell grinding the Mg and KNO3 together. Diaper only.
    How about making some fountains. Like make one with charcoal and another with aluminum. This will show the difference between a metal and just black body radiation.
    Or maybe some dragon's eggs. You know, with a bit of lead tetroxide that you have made?

    • @christopherleubner6633

      You can also make dragons egg crackle mix with bismeuth oxide, it works a little better and isn't nearly as toxic.

    Как вариант.Марганец даёт много искр и вспышку если насыпной.В трубке 6мм очень форсово горит. Поджиг обычная спичка.

    1:09 Да ладно. Обычно бризантность - мера разрушения при детонации high explosives, сравнивать с которыми флэш-порох не совсем корректно

    • @cranialconstruction2218
      @cranialconstruction2218  4 місяці тому

      Но если вы исследуете это, бризанс на самом деле используется с порошками-вспышками. Я не просто говорю вещи. Пожалуйста, исследуйте это самостоятельно.

      @@cranialconstruction2218 Хм. Странно. До сих пор не встречал такой харакетристики ни в книгах Такео Шимизу, ни Джона А. Конклинга. В русских книгах подразумевается, что бризантность флеш-пороха слишком мала, чтобы быть характеристикой.
      Хорошо, я дополнительно проверю это.

    Wouldn't it work better if you mix the additives to the flash powder, instead of putting them on top of it?
    Be careful when mixing things to Mg powder! It might ignite spontaneously with some oxidizers!
