1999 F1 cars are some of the most beautiful F1 cars ever, imo It's when aerodynamics started being taken really seriously, all the while maintaining that classic look
I used to hate Hakkinen those years just because i saw him as a rival of Ferrari. Growing up i found out what a great driver and a great man he was. One of the most talented and respectful drivers ever been in Formula 1
First time I got to see qualifying times, I thought the 1999 season was done deal, sealed championship for the McLaren given their large gap to the rest of the field. So I know how that felt like.
Same, was a big Michael Schumacher fan back then and it says a lot about 1998-2000 that whenever Hakkinen retired, I always breathed a sigh of relief. Such a great driver who gave it his all and often had something up his sleeve.
@@samsaliba1532 No, he didnt drift either. He skidded. The difference between skidded and drifting are that when you are drifting, you are skidding while also turning the wheel.

Trust me, the mid to late 90s had some of the most boring races of all time. This race is by far the greatest ever imo, but you'd fall asleep during most others
I remember watching this live, so happy for Eddie back then... who knew that the championship would unfold like it did that year, unbelievable. Combine it with Murray Walker's commentary and you have an extremely exciting season :)
I don’t think Martin had learnt to stay quiet for the start and end like is custom for secondary commentators. Now he is the model in which other commentators look to replicate
Martin is a far better commentator than Murray. The more I watch these classic races, the more I wonder why Murray was so popular, he kept confusing driver with driver, mocking drivers, misspoking, and offen sounds like he dosen't know what he is talking about. Maybe he had just been there for too long and people felt attach to him.
@@oscarshen6855 Although to his credit in this one, he was right straight away that it was Trulli colliding with Gené while Martin kept insisting it was Panis.
I hate how no one is saying anything about the amazing performance Heinz Harald-Frentzen did in 1999, he could have perfectly won that year if the odds were on his side
The Ferrari F399 might just be one of the best looking F1 cars ever! After 1999 F1 cars have never been able to match the pre-2000 cars. Aerodynamics of the cars were much simpler and looked a lot better in the previous century.
I really like the look of that Williams livery. It's not there best livery they've had, but I thought the red and white, with the yellow and blue flashes looked excellent. Seems like an unpopular opinion.
I remember this like yesterday... it was Speedvision with Derek Daly here in the USA back then. Now only if the engines sounded like this today. Remember the exhaust hitting the floor on the McLaren's??? What a freaking scream!!!!
Yeah Albert Park used to be better primarily because it was first race of the season and the cars were far more unreliable and also following other cars was a lot easier so the racing was naturally closer. Overtaking was always difficult but not as hard as it is now and not artificial as it is now. 2002 was also quite something ignoring the winner.
I love the old McLaren "Darth Vader" helmets....it was even better at Moncao that one year when they had a sponsor deal to promote a Star Wars movie and actually did wear Darth Vader and Storm Trooper helmets.
There two other races from 1999 you guys could replay, France and Austria. France was a race which saw Barrichello, Hakkinen, Frentzen, and Michael Schumacher go toe-to-toe in the pouring rain, while Austria was a race which saw Hakkinen go from last to third, with a series of big-balls overtakes. It also saw Eddie Irvine jump from third to first in the pit stop phase, and was without a doubt the best of his four wins.
this was the race which ensured the Arrows victory over Minardi. They both had 1 pt, but Arrows took the tie braker due to that 7th place of Takagi. Great season great battles with those Arrows and lots of nostalgia.
Properly brutal race, and a real highlight. From memory only 7 cars finished (??). Seemed like every component of every car got flogged to absolute max with all manner of failures.
Everything in those cars were meant to perform to the max in shorter intervals. For example, every drivers has at least 4-5 engines per race weekend (1 for practice, 1 special qualifying engine, 1 for the warmup and race), might be more. Now it's around 3-4 components of the power unit for the whole season
Had Frentzen not lost first position at the start, he would have won in Australia. Imagine him winning on his debut with Jordan and his car letting him win in the European Grand Prix. He would have been easily in contention for the World Championship in a Jordan after being labeled as a Williams failure!
And without him spinning out at oil in Imola on P3 + massive brake failure in Canada running 2nd. Man that was an epic season for HHF and Jordan, just not enough luck.
