I was six years old when this song came around back in summer time 1987...When family was truly family and the cook outs.. Not just my family everybody family..I miss these times please take me back
Herb Alpert is the co- founder of A&M records ( he's the A ) and was at the head of the label when Janet exploded with her Control album and became their top artist . It isn't a shock that he wisely teamed up with his no. 1 artist Janet and her producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on this song. I have to say they did a great job of mixing Janet's sound with Alpert and his band.
Wow.. totally takes me back to high school.. used to jam out to this song a LOT and my mom would make me turn my radio down!! And I would protest: " But maaaa- it's Janet Jackson!!" LOL.. good memories
I heard this on the oldies station last Thursday. I was just thinking how much I didn’t appreciate this song enough back in the sixth seventh grade when it came out .
32 years later and this song is still strong! Smh, today's talent don't even come close (with the exception of Boney James and anybody he does a duet with).
I used to wait for the bus stop when I heard this song this song brings back memory this song is so 1987 I remember that. I used to love this saxophone player which I didn't know that it was Herb Alpert I was surprised.
I remember when this came out. I'd be taking students to horse shows , competing all day , then back at the hotel at night dancing my ass off with my older clients. So much fun . I especially loved this song that the DJ was calling me Diamond girl lol. Diamonds are my birthstones. However , if I ever got married I so don't need a diamond. An honest guy would do for me !!
Back in the day, radio stations would play entire albums on the radio and my mother recorded them, and this one of them, I used to get the cassette (most dont know what that is) and fast forward and rewind to get to this song....for those that dont know, the lead vocal is Janet Jackson & Lisa Keith (the lead singer on Making Love In The Rain) but we are used to Janet's voice and most dont know about Lisa, who was or is married to Spencer Bernard of Flyte Tyme he wrote Janets "He Doesnt Know Im Alive" #thejam
Jarrod Butts Couldn't agree more!! But you can't leave out the beautiful, multi-talented Lisa Keith, who was influential and instrumental working with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on background vocals for various artists, and her own solo career thru the years ♥️
I'm a former horn player and can really appreciate herb Albert. One of the best trumpet players of all time and Janet is Janet... need I say anymore.... great jam for the ages.
Anyone else remember back when (sometime in the early 90's) this song would get played every day over the stereo at THE HOME DEPOT stores all over America? I remember well because that was my employer at the time... and sadly their stores have really gotten crappy since then... those of you who weren't around to shop or work there in the 80's and early 90's will never understand just how great a company this was back then... both for employees and customers... their customer service in every department was top notch in those days... and employees were given a LOT more training, as well as being paid a lot more and given much better benefits than they would get now.
oh yeah! "You told me you loved me, You told me you cared But when I'm around you it's like I'm not there I need a reminder, something I can see Something on my finger, shines so brightly Don't you know diamonds are a girls best friend?"
Perfect car radio fare: great backbeat, especially behind Janet's vocal (which she nails with just the right amount of attiude). Herb Alpert is a genius and we are all the beneficiaries.
Went out and bought the cassette when it came out in 87 played it so much that I wore it out. So many great tunes on here. Have no idea how Alpert and Jackson got together, but the collaboration was pure gold.
Yes, Diamonds, I'm here for you Miss Jackson. Herb and his jazzy horn🔥 playing. Always a huge fan of this collaboration of these two artists. Never seen a live performance on stage doing this song. FAMILY MATTERS PEOPLE PEACE&LOVE
I can't believe that i did not notice Miss. Janet Jackson voice. I love her. Janet is my above all favorite. and the people who did the song with her is very fortunate.
The Publix grocery stores in Florida be jammin the 80s. This song came on today while I was Shipt shopping and I was dancing my ass off down the aisles. This white guy about my age joined me and we were laughing our asses off. He said he saw her in concert in high school. I was 13 in 1987 8th grade. Janet was the 💣 back in the day.
Ah. This still sounds so good. Maybe even better than I remember. I love the intro also. Gotta put this on my iPod and ride my ride my convertible in the spring like a time machine.
I do too. But the title should be changed to Herb Alpert & Janet Jackson-Diamonds, because the song is originally written by Herb Alpert with Janet on the vocals.
Janet is my forever ❤️!!!!! This is my favorite Ms. J. Jam. A Sexy song from a Sexy woman!!!!!!!!!! Great collaboration from the great Mr. Albert!!!!!!!!
I've been a lifelong fan of Ms. Jackson yet I only heard this song the other day on Rick Dees top 40 from the 80s. I could hear this beat that sounded like something off the control album and then heard Janet's unmistakable voice and here I am! 😍 ♥ It should've been included on her control album. It did chart in Ireland but it was 1987 the year before I was born 🤦♂️
I was six years old when this song came around back in summer time 1987...When family was truly family and the cook outs.. Not just my family everybody family..I miss these times please take me back
I was 5 at the time. I remember this song on BET.
Agree.
Great times!! I was 9 years old.
When I think of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis I shed a tear of appreciation. You can here the joy and the gift in their music...

Underrated song. One of the best of the 80s. Brings back memories.

Everything Herb Alpert touches seems to turn to gold. What can't this guy do??
This is one of her underrated jams! Pure fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Its actually originally from Herb Alperts album Keep Your Eyes On Me. She just sang on it with Lisa Keith.
I heard this on the oldies station last Thursday. I was just thinking how much I didn’t appreciate this song enough back in the sixth seventh grade when it came out .

I can't recall any station ever playing entire albums. I grew up in the late 70s, 80s and 90s, I don't know what radio station you listened to.
Herb Alpert and Janet Jackson...irresistible! Can't leave out Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.

Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis produced the hell out of this album.
+ Ezekiel Major Ended up the highest-selling album of Alpert's career.
No doubt. Jam & Lewis made magic with that album. Never heard of Alpert before this Album. Diamonds is my favorite cut.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis squeezed every drop of rythm out of that Roland TR-808 drum machine
