We test the Mathews z7 and the Hoyt Maxxis 31 to see how well each of them shoots. Wayne and Chris discuss the two bows and share their opinions on which is better!
Good point with the grip. We just strung and tuned the bows and was a little tight with thumb. Shot both bows again the other day and both felt pretty good. Thanks for the comment.
Interesting perspective on these two bows. I had the opportunity to shoot both today at my local dealer. you can't go wrong with either. I found the Z7 to have a smoother draw cycle. It was also slightly faster. It allowed a little more creep before taking off. the Hoyt had better balance, felt a little better in the hand. It had a very solid wall, also seemed a little lighter and more compact. I was shooting without a stabalizer and felt just a slight bit of vibration with the Hoyt
I happen to own a Matthews that I myself purchased and I like it just fine. I'm 19 and I am definitely not a snob. I have friends that shoot each and they all seem to be quite happy- it's personal preference, I believe.
The Mathews Z7 is the sweetest bow ive shot. I have the Z7 but have shot both of these fine bows.. The Z7 has a way smoother draw, and when you pull the release it feels as if the arrow hasnt even been shot. It is smooth smooth smooth...
Shellboy. I suggest going to your local archery shop and shooting every bow you like. Good bow shops will gladly set all of them up for you. I like Mathews myself because of the smooth draw which doesn't cause me to make a lot of movement in the stand. Chrono is 306. 29" draw and 27.25 lenght xweave 200 arrows. But that shouldn't be a selling point. Get a bow that fits you. You'll know what it is when you draw it back. Hope this helps!
I test shot a few Mathews bows when I was looking to buy a new bow last year. I chose a hoyt because I just thought it was a better fit for me. I would have probably bought a bowtech assassin if price hadn't been an issue.
Hoyt Katera - will always be my favorite. I just can't find a reason to switch or upgrade . It has performed flawlessly for me under some very demanding hunting conditions . I wouldn't put down anybody else's choice, have friends who love bear, mathews, etc.but for me she will always be my baby.
@TheJarnagin exactly right! Personally, I think hoyt offers the best quality because they don't just make a new model just so they can put something new out on the market like mathews, they stick with the same design until they find something better, even if it takes them a couple years.
Hey i have about 1500$ to spend im a big fan of mathews and wondering what bow would fit me best out of that catgory Im 14 27" draw length I can pull up to 55# And curently shoot a pse bow madness
I own a z7 and shot my buddy's Hoyt spider. I love my z7 but it's much heavier than the Hoyt. Less weight makes a big difference when it come to holding a steady aim. Both bows will cost your ton of money.
my mathews helim is some what close to the ibo speed they say its 332 and i was getting 312 with a 27inch draw 345gr arrow 65# threw the crono. I think its alot in how you tune your bow cause i have seen some in the 280 range with longer draw lengths and 70# and i have seen the same with hoyt. its just what you prefer and fits you.
No I didn't check out any of the new Hoyts. I love my matthews. It's fast, light, quiet and I have more confidence holding it than any bow I have ever shot. From the first day it was on like money. Maybe it's not the best bow in the world for some people, but I don't really care. It's the best I have ever had and truly cannot imagine ever needing anything better than this.....
I think it all depends in what bow you get from either brand. The bows from mathews are good but the IBO speeds aren't as close than the speed from hoyt. But mathews bows shoot much smoother and draw much smoother than hoyt. Both companies are great.
i went and shot the z7 and the Maxxis31 today and the maxxis felt like it had a real shaky draw to it but the z7 was nice and smooth all the way threw the draw cycle i like the z7 better
@TheJarnagin I didn't want a Mathews because I didn't want to be another guy with a Mathews. But compared to the Bowtech, Bear, Hoyt, PSE, and Darton it had the best draw, camed-over the smoothest, the wall was solid, and had a grip that fit me (see video). It was slower that the Bear, but it is very quiet and I've been out-shooting my friends since I got it.
can someone help me....im after a new bow left handed mainly for hunting rabits foxes maybe a roo or 2.....what is the best bow and arrow and tip combo
I am impartial to brand names, what shots and fits me well I'll buy. It's like Chevy vs Ford, I don't really care but i'll purchase whatever performs to my needs. 1. the guy in black has a kung fu grip on that bow, he looks nervous. 2. the iin orange has better technique 3. Even where I live, why do I feel like I hear people that shot a Hoyt bow say " Mathews are good bows, but you pay extra for the name." I've even had prostaff say this to my face and I hear it on youtube.
@SMGaines06 Agreed...with either of these bows tuned properly you should be able to hit a 1x1 target from that distance in that controlled environment. Not even hitting the center of what looks like a 4x4 bulls eye is pretty pathetic.
Not a fan of Hoyt or Mathews personally, not saying they are bad bows but they are not for me! To bash someone for the bow they shoot is childish! Everyone has an opinion and different bows shoot and feel different for certain people. All bows out today are gonna be great bows it's all what feels right to the individual purchasing the bow. I happen to shoot a quest and wouldn't trade it for any bow out today. That being said goodluck to everyone this coming season and have fun shooting!
Hoyt's limbs are stronger by far . the only reason mathews bows are smoother drawing is because it is a single cam. Obviously a single cam will draw smoother then a cam and 1/2. With that hoyt's cams will generate more speed. also hoyt's grips are much more comfortable then mathew's. Also hoyt bows tend to shoot closer to there IBO speeds then Mathews bows, a lot closer. so for anyone who says Mathews are faster just goes by the IBO speed and not true arrow speed
Wildlife Conservation Ecology, haha and are you saying Hoyt isnt a big marketed bow. Dude have you been living under a rock??. Both Hoyt and Mathews have a share in the most sales worldwide. Its like shimano and diawa for reels. Its just preference neither is better than than the other, they are both at the top of their game for sure.
@redbone311 Except the Hoyt is about 11 ounces lghter. Yes, Mathews lies about the weight of their bows. Additionally, the Hoyt is much more durable. Aside from the aforementioned, they are comparable.
Why would you compare a double cam bow(Hoyt) to a single cam bow(Mathews)? That is like comparing a .30-06 to a .22 and saying the .30-06 is a better weapon!
I have a hoyt Katera and a Monster 6(MR6).I can not tell which one is better.my point is that you can't just shout out this brand is the best. And it's a waste of time.
guy in the orange has much better form than they guy in the black. he holds the bow with much less tightness in his hand and more in his back. much less torque that means which calls for a more accurate shot
why not have the same guy shoot each bow? Wouldn't that be a better indicator of the better bow for at least that person? I can shoot a tactical z7 against a pro with a long bow and I would get destroyed. It's in the Indian, not the bow and arrow.
Logan Pfingsten they are completely different price ranges. A carbon bow will be lighter for sure but so will your pocket. I think they put these two bows together because they were similar in weight, price and speed. Apples with apples as they say..
you cant get an accurate shot when the guy in the black is squeezing the grip anyone who knows correct form knows u let it rest on your hand not hold it... and it also depends on how the bows rest is set up im sure if they get a professional there to shoot they would have all arrows touching with both bows
Guy un the black shirt. Your grip is wayyyyy to tight. If your lead hand is that tight when practicing u must get quit a bite of hand torque when hunting. Nice loose grip knucks at a 45 and feel the bow going threw ypur forearm not your hand. Gary young, Young Guns archery.
well, first off, both those guys don't know how to shoot. second, the guy in the black squeezes the grip which torques the bow anyways. so of course someone that doesn't know how to shoot a bow would like a bigger grip bow.
I did replace the grips on my Hoyt after shooting it the very first time…that made a huge difference.
Good point with the grip. We just strung and tuned the bows and was a little tight with thumb. Shot both bows again the other day and both felt pretty good.
Thanks for the comment.
love the z7 and i love the sound as the arrows being drawn back.
"I don't always shoot a bow, but when I do, I shoot a Mathews. Stay thirsty my friends".
I happen to own a Matthews that I myself purchased and I like it just fine. I'm 19 and I am definitely not a snob. I have friends that shoot each and they all seem to be quite happy- it's personal preference, I believe.

At 2:43 and 2:46 there is a slight buzzing noise on each of the bows. Is something not tightened down?
Are you using the schaffer rests on both of these bows?
Hope this helps!
your right, i am picking my new heli-m this week, I am changing from a hoyt vector 32 because drawing it back was giving me sholder pain
I test shot a few Mathews bows when I was looking to buy a new bow last year. I chose a hoyt because I just thought it was a better fit for me. I would have probably bought a bowtech assassin if price hadn't been an issue.
are those bows noise or with handshock?
SWEET t-shirt Idaho state bowhunters jamboree rocked last year ,see you at 2010!
Possibly, however it's more likely you are hearing exaggerated details of the bow from the shotgun mic used for the video.
anymore it don't matter what bow you buy they are all alike its just what you prefer and how comfortable you are.

Gotta love the best bow arguement just like pepsi or coke, chev or ford each to thier own folks. The only thing stay safe out in the bush
I own a z7 and shot my buddy's Hoyt spider. I love my z7 but it's much heavier than the Hoyt. Less weight makes a big difference when it come to holding a steady aim. Both bows will cost your ton of money.

Which Sheep brand will you be hunting with this year??????
No I didn't check out any of the new Hoyts. I love my matthews. It's fast, light, quiet and I have more confidence holding it than any bow I have ever shot. From the first day it was on like money. Maybe it's not the best bow in the world for some people, but I don't really care. It's the best I have ever had and truly cannot imagine ever needing anything better than this.....
Jamboree, what a great bow shoot.
Hoyt is simply the best.
i might get the z7 and i just cant wait
I think it all depends in what bow you get from either brand. The bows from mathews are good but the IBO speeds aren't as close than the speed from hoyt. But mathews bows shoot much smoother and draw much smoother than hoyt. Both companies are great.
I have a ds3800 but I'm thanking bout geting a z7
i went and shot the z7 and the Maxxis31 today and the maxxis felt like it had a real shaky draw to it but the z7 was nice and smooth all the way threw the draw cycle i like the z7 better

Thats what ive told people for years, Glad to see theres someone thats not stuck on the name lol
@NewDaysofNoah it is smoother unquestionably. they both look like there struggling with the draws
maxxis 35 seems like the whip bow for me just because I'm a longer draw
Not a fan of Hoyt or Mathews personally, not saying they are bad bows but they are not for me! To bash someone for the bow they shoot is childish! Everyone has an opinion and different bows shoot and feel different for certain people. All bows out today are gonna be great bows it's all what feels right to the individual purchasing the bow. @joshardy25 exactly i shot every bow a man can think of and loved the hoyt carbon element!
No bow has a smoother draw than Mathews, hands down.

damn straight
had nothing but problems with Z7 . and 0 problems with maxxis trust me go with the hoyt maxxis
@zziNsanityz my first bow was my favorite; it was a mathews ultra 2 ik ik its discontinued but i loved tht bow!!!!!
Hoyt all the way. Mathews is a big marketing bow. Although good, Hoyt is better, ask all the magazines.
Wildlife Conservation Ecology, haha and are you saying Hoyt isnt a big marketed bow. Dude have you been living under a rock??.

that's Darryl from Ice road truckers
@rush13sg This si my opinion the whisker biscuit sucks get the tropfy taker! The wisker biscuit was slowing my arow down by 20fps
Hard to find a bad bow, but easy to find a better bow. lmao
Why would you compare a double cam bow(Hoyt) to a single cam bow(Mathews)? That is like comparing a .30-06 to a .22 and saying the .30-06 is a better weapon!
Dose it really matter?
@wildcatsrock333 heck ya..mathews is the sure wat to go
Hoyt hands down, unless you want a bow that is of lesser quality.
I have a hoyt Katera and a Monster 6(MR6).I can not tell which one is better.my point is that you can't just shout out this brand is the best. And it's a waste of time.
guy in the orange has much better form than they guy in the black. he holds the bow with much less tightness in his hand and more in his back. much less torque that means which calls for a more accurate shot
hoyt for the win
When you buy a Mathews its a $900 Hat and the bow is free .....catch us if you can
AH THATS Wayne i go there to shoot all the time
why not have the same guy shoot each bow? Wouldn't that be a better indicator of the better bow for at least that person? I can shoot a tactical z7 against a pro with a long bow and I would get destroyed. It's in the Indian, not the bow and arrow.
Hoyt is just as good as Matthews but 400 dollars cheaper
the goober that said he likes the Mathew's, watch him strain thru the Mathew's draw cycle in the beginning. lol.
and maybe relax the grip??
Matttews z-7 ,,Harder draw cycle!Like thr PSE EVO MAX>>BUT,,EVO MAX SHOTS 366 ibo..
Get the Schaffer opposition... shooting it on my pse omen its a demon
he needs to open the left hand!!
need foolow through
How about you take hoyts carbon element and put it up against the z7 and see what he has to say about it
Logan Pfingsten they are completely different price ranges.
A carbon bow will be lighter for sure but so will your pocket. I think they put these two bows together because they were similar in weight, price and speed. Apples with apples as they say..
mathews are so much better
buddy u got ripped off there are fully loaded for 500-600 and the new creed for 750
Sounds like ol wayne was a little butt hurt chris didn't like the Hoyt. Its ok Wayne
That draw weight is too much for black shirt
Guy in black shirt, if you relax your grip you will shoot better
mathews is way better
you cant get an accurate shot when the guy in the black is squeezing the grip anyone who knows correct form knows u let it rest on your hand not hold it... and it also depends on how the bows rest is set up im sure if they get a professional there to shoot they would have all arrows touching with both bows

dude on the right needs to do some push ups.
terrible shooting lol
Nobody has nothing on mathews!
Useless review gentleman!!!
Wow both these guys are piss poor shots
bullcrap
