Star tech Andre' Cholmondeley details all the specs of Pat Metheny's vintage synth unit and its controller.
Jazz guitar god Pat Metheny recently played Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on his solo tour supporting his latest record, Dream Box. Ahead of the show, PG’s John Bohlinger met with Metheny’s tech Andre' Cholmondeley, who pulled back the curtain on what just might be the most complex solo rig ever devised. Afterward, Cholmondeley painstakingly wrote out Metheny’s signal path to help clarify the rig. Buckle up, and keep up if you can.

Pat and Andy Summers were the reason I HAD to get a GR-300 in 1988. I still love it!!
Shawn Lane used one of these bc of Pat. Wild to see one up close!

1992 Roland GR1. Vast improvement. Easy installation of the GK2 pickup.
My buddy scored a GR300 and hex pickup years ago. He's had it set up on different guitars over the years. About to go on a tele.
Wow - fun little vid! I demoed these for Roland New Zealand when they were released - lotta fun. In the end I took the Strat 'controller' over this more 'SGish' one because I already mainly played a Gibson 1968 LP Custom and figured it would be nice to have a Strat style guitar (I think Ibanez made the 2 Roland guitars to go with the GR 300?). Still have it and occasionally fire it up for the filtering / octave thing it does that is very intuitive and analog. I love the way PM uses the octave jump on that album - around about the same time Fripp & Belew were both using it on a few tracks. Altho 'that' Offramp sound is immediately recognisable there are a lot of subtle things you can do with the 300 that are unique to it.
Guitar synths, especially earlier ones, were tricky. The tracking wasn't 100%, often some latency. Pat and Allan Holdsworth (Synthaxe) seemed the only two who really mastered it. Even Holdsworth kind of ditched it eventually. But Pat REALLY mastered it. His solo on Are you going with me? from the live album Travels is an example of his mastery of the instrument.

As much as I love Pat, he has produced some of the most horrible and cheesy sounds with that. Should have stayed with acoustic or semi hollow.

@@non_brewed_condiment I do and your name is one of my favorite tracks. Allan also made horrible sounds with SynthAxe at times even though I love the man. Also AAL first 2 albums are amazing.
