I get asked a lot if I have any advice on how to read more? Here's my answer... 😊 I'l adress excuses like books being boring or too complicated, lack of motivation for reading and having no time. But is it really a good idea to try to read a spiritual book a week?

Its not how much spiritual books you read but rather how much you learn and how you plan on adopting them to your life. For most people, reading the bible, catechism, and the liturgy of hours is enough.
I absolutely agree with the first sentence! Regarding the second one I'd say that a few other books might be helpful as well 😊
I could simply squeal with gratitude in finding your channel. 🎉 Your content combines my two greatest loves, faith and literature. Thank you and many blessings !
Aw that's really sweet of you! Welcome to my channel!
@BiblicalBookworm do you recommend or can share a link to free audio books.Thank you Robert from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Your comments on the value and dangers of endless spiritual reading are excellent.
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Teresa de Avila used to say that you should never pray without having a spiritual book close by in case you got distracted you could open your book and draw your mind back to prayer.
I didn't know that, thanks for sharing!
I love your approach to spiritual reading, I hope to read 1 book per month that is spiritual and 1 that is considered a classic or a mystery. I have 2 motivations for reading one is audiobooks and the other is writing down what I read each week day in my journal. I feel more accomplished each day if I read something even if it's just a sentence of a book. Thank you for this great video, it is so informative and helpful. God Bless!
That sounds like a great plan! I'm happy to hear that my video was helpful 😊
Thank you for your encouragement in spiritual reading and practice!
You're welcome :)
I've met many Catholics, but it seems mostly the men who are heavily into the books. Only answer this if you like: were you considering a vocation to be a nun? You seem so disposed.
Agreed: prayer is above reading. I used to read a lot, but then gravitated into corporal works of mercy volunteering. Now, after having served quite a tour of duty, I'm shifting back to more prayer, daily mass, and reading as well as listening to videos like yours. It's a blessing that Providence arranged
Yes, spiritual pride is dangerous. That's where prayer comes in, keeping us humble, sacramental confession aside. So far, so good. I look forward to more videos. Blessings upon you.
Wow! You're insightful and straightforward and coherent - very attractive qualities for a speaker on topics that interest me.
I agree with your emphasis on considering one's own need or purpose as the basis to be self-motivated to read efficiently. Bravo!
Yes, Father Mark G. is very good too. I've listened to him for a while.
You also follow Father Mike S.? Excellent! He's such a blessing.
Good point about the difficulty of starting a book.
Yes, it seems that on average it's rather the men who are interested in such books. Interestingly, in my observation women pray more / rather participate in religious events. What is your observation here?
I'm happy to hear that you like my videos & the way they are made!
God bless!
@@BiblicalBookworm Yes, I've also observed that women pray more than participate in religious events.
Blessings.
Thank you for sharing good advice on how to pick books Elizabeth! With so much content out there, it may seem one drowns in the waves of knowledge if we don't have a boat or someone to reach down and pull us out.
I'm always happy to help!
Great suggestions Elizabeth thank you God bless you 🙏
God bless you!
@@BiblicalBookworm Thank you Elizabeth!! 😀
Hi, thank you for your time with these videos. I thought that you read a lot of books because your background is full of books. I have a few catholic and I get overwhelmed with such amount of information.
I haven't read most of the books in my background, that's my families collection 🤫😉
Hi Elizabeth thank you for your reply, and let me know about your background books belonging to your family. God bless you. From Laurens SC.
Wow, this was just excellent. You are very wise.

Thank you Mr. Maloney! 😊
Thanks Elisabeth! 🤓 I read a lot of theology and history.

I wish I had a friend like you 🥺😫😭
That's really sweet of you! 😊
This channel is of great help! God bless you!
I'm happy to hear that!
I love your UA-cam channel so much!!! 🥰 God bless you sister. Thank you for this great advice.
God bless you too!
I think spiritual reading has the potential to guide people into a wealth of resources that could better their spiritual life. My understanding of the faith would be different if not for reading about St. Ignatius's rules of spiritual discernment, the five ways of St. Thomas, about Lectio Divina and the four senses of Scripture. None of that is in the bible but are nonetheless illuminating teachings that flow from Scripture and help delve deeper into it.
Absolutely! Some people can derive great benefits from spiritual reading!
"Learn Broadly, Study Deep", From Dr James Tour.
First find a topic or material which you will deeply study then branch out to the sub topics or cross-disciplines.
I believe everyone should deeply read and reread the bible regularly and from there they can read books of interest or need.
-I've read/llistened to spiritual literature about the lives of saints, mental prayer, theology etc
-and I also read/listen to cross-disciplinary literature about biblical archeology, History, Psychology, Politics etc.
....I relate my experiences and learnings to the Word of God and that's why I feel that my understanding of the Bible changes/improves every time I return to reading it.
That's definetely a good approach!
These are my 5 suggestions, i wont say the same ones that have already been suggested. (Story of a soul, diary st Faustina, imitation of Christ, I believe in love..etc..)
The life of Christ (or anything by Fulton Sheen)
He and I, by Gabrielle Bossis
The Passion of Jesus, and its hidden meaning, by Fr James Grownings s.j.
The return of the prodigal son, by Henri Nouwen (especially pg37-39 "deaf to the voice of love")
The collected works of St. John of the cross.
These are life changing ❤️
Thank you for the recommendations!
Great video! Thank you!
You're welcome!
I spent two and a half years reading solely my Catholic Bible, and I have already begun to read it a second time, that's five years... But this time I read fiction along with it, 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens is currently inspiring. so much so that charity increased during that Christmas it was released in 1843, locally where he was from. Like you said reading to solve a problem can help motivate me to read, but also the historical aspect can be fascinating if you are interested in absorbing the writer defining the world, it really is a way to connect our minds. As the ancient Egyptians would say: 'You are Myself'. Are the old Egyptians damned? Did God have a purpose for them? I think so, God doesn't reveal everything at once. I'm not saying they are in heaven, who am I to know, I'm just saying can we pray for these people? Can we pray for people through books? Are we connected this way? That's just me thinking, I never heard anyone say this before; in writing one of the sayings is "everything has already been said," YES I agree, but how can we reach people if we are not thinking? Absorbing, then thinking is a gift, like affection is a gift, reading is another muscle. The math on writing is sound, if there are eight billion people on the planet, and one percent still read, what is that like eighty million readers. There are around one hundred and twenty million books published, chances are if you get one published at least one person will read it. I think sometimes the Holy Spirit inspires us. God works in mysterious ways. The Catholic Church didn't have the language to explain things like the three in one God for a thousand years, or transubstantiation. A saint had to create the word transubstantiation in his divine will... Blessed be God forever. Thanks for the video Elisabeth. Take care. Happy reading. And Merry Christmas!
Happy reading and Merry Christmas! 😊🎄
Hi, I found your video of Four Loves by C.S. Lewis... And I'm so glad you've done it. The first part was confusing to me as well and the friendship chapter, my favorite as it lit a lot... I'd like to contact you somehow. God bless you. Leon
Hi Leon, you can contact me by email, it's in the description :)
@@BiblicalBookworm Sorry, Elisabeth... I'll untrain my self someday. If I find brothers & sisters, it's Gold to me and I'm not used to this.🙂
I've read alot of padre pio books 👍 pray hope dont worry
I haven't read any books by him yet. Do you have a specific recommendation or a book that you particularly liked?
@@BiblicalBookworm through the year with padre pio is a good one , he was a Italian priest who died in 1968
For me, the writings of the Saints are a place to seek Jesus, where He can and will be found, in truth. Sometimes I do not even pay much attention to the Saints the books are purportedly about, as a result.
Dear Jesus, please help us all to improve with the Christian Duty of Venerating the Saints, especially when doing such reading
Amen!
"Reading: The great means of salvation" Haha!!
great work! courage to you !
i am just discovering the channel . what do you think of reading books concerning the catholic doctrine first or beside (e.g the catechism of pius X etc) in order to know correctly the principal articles of Faith ) and reading on the spiritual life in general (e.g Adolf Tanquaray )??all that so as to have a solid catholic base and an overview of the true spirituality , and to know better what are my problems and which books is adaquate for me.

I really strugle reading in peper form,
Understandable!
Bullseye..... Good Job
Thanks! 😊
The way to read more is to not watch TV or YT..lol.. seriously.
That is certainly a good idea, although it has some limits. As I said in the video, sometimes one is so tired during the day that one is not able to do anything remotely productive. I'd say it's not entirely possible to swap out TV for reading because watching TV requires less energy 😊🤔
@@BiblicalBookworm we have to train our brain to not "need" to be entertained. This is why so many leave mass not feeling fulfilled because we expect entertainment. The screen runs so fast that our brain goes into like being a vegetable almost. Im not explaining this right but what i mean is it causes so much damage. Reading is natural and good for our brain.
@@BiblicalBookworm oh and ive gone for many many years without TV so its possible. But ask me how many books ive read..😁 many, too many to count 📚📖. I just started watch UA-cam when covid hit. Even then i just mostly listen.
How many books do you read? a book a week?
Usually yes
@@BiblicalBookworm how do you do it? How much time do you set aside daily
I don't set time aside, as explained in the video, I only read books as audiobooks while travelling/cooking/cleaning/working out/going for a walk 😊
@@BiblicalBookworm oh cool. Was just wondering because of that giant library you have
