Shopping Vintage Estate Sales! Bargains Found, Lessons Learned

  • We're freestyling today, visiting one of our favorite areas to shop estate sales! The old road into Independence, Missouri (next to Kansas City) is littered with estate sale signs...will we ever get to the one we saw online that led us here?
    Our first stop is filled with lessons for us, where a new house proves to be filled with old things and prices are all over the board. There's beautiful antique furniture, an amazing art glass epergne and sets of dinnerware people still collect...but can we afford it? We show how to find bargains in a sale where they're pushing prices (incuding a good buy on a Raymor ceramic piece), and give some useful tips for people having estate sales to avoid the pitfalls we see at this one.
    Our next stop is the place we saw online...no, wait! There's a garage sale that looks huge right over there. This is where the real bargains are, we spend $3 for about $30 worth of sweet Gay Fad fruit kitchenware and a Hollywood Regency dresser mirror, then head towards our destination!
    Antiques feature in the ads for this little house, but where are they? We miss out on the non-furniture vintage in this place, but we make up for it with a signed starfish pin for only $2. Better still, we spy a sign up the road for a half-off church sale, where we find better deals on more vintage than at the estate sales!
    One last house remains to see, a fine Victorian owned by an illustrious native son with a funny middle name. Do you know what it is? We solve the mystery and smile at our fun shopping day. (Oh, and the antique mall we stumbled across? That will be in our next video!)

    Hello from Kansas City, MO! Born and raised here! My husband grew up in Independence! He said he remembers that the secret service was set up in the brick house across the street from the Truman home!
    Loved watching the estate sales but imagine my shock and surprise when you stopped at a garage sale…it was my husband’s Aunt and Uncle’s home! His uncle grew up in the beautiful old two story home next door. His father was a doctor and collected beautiful antiques. I remember the home with a salon and an upstairs ballroom with beautiful antiques everywhere! You would have loved it! (The family sold the home many years ago.)

    I rang Harry Truman’s gate bell. I was 7. My dad made me lol. Someone looked out then window pulling the curtain back. Dad said it was Harry. He actually was alive and living there. It was in the 50’s.

    You are 100% correct about estate sale companies over pricing things and then providing discounts and not telling you about the discounts and you leave so many things behind that you might’ve purchased.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  9 місяців тому +2

      In some cases, overpricing the good stuff is done so the estate sale person can get the stuff for very little or nothing at the end...not fair to the client

  • @cecoya
    @cecoya 10 місяців тому +4

    It is too bad that they really did not want to sell everything at the first estate sale and also failed to mention the discount. They priced everything so high and now it will probably go to the GoodWill or another thrift center. Thanks for taking me along with you and showing me some wonderful glass. You have a great day and safe travels

    Aha! Thank you George. I just learned something about a family heirloom I inherited from my grandma. I have her, what I now know is a game table. It is circular though when you open it. She called it her hidden treasure table because she hid her more precious jewelry in the hidden card drawer. It has beautiful claw foot tips on the feet and the legs are more delicate than the one in this first estate sale.

    Your comment on the fondue pot made me chuckle. I remember sitting around a table starving to death as a teenager, while my older siblings, then married in their 30's having two pots going on the dinning room table. Took all evening to eat, with every little bite needing to go into that pot, and then come out at various stages of doneness or over doneness. lol It really is a silly way to have dinner, but the height of fashion according to my siblings at the time.

    I recently went to a living estate sale in Evansville, IN on the second day. The elderly lady and her family were running the sale. I commented to the daughter that it was the most goofus glass I'd ever seen on one place. She said, "Because it's all here!" She said it was about 800 pieces and it was everywhere. The plan was to pack it all up and wait for it to "come back." I got the feeling this beloved collection was not going to go anywhere while the mother was alive. And, it was for sure not going to be discounted in price for this sale.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  9 місяців тому +1

      Wow! I know a few serious collectors, and if it's an old collection in good shape it could do well. Few people are seeing goofus in non-worn condition now

    George, you’re the best! I love estate sales, and I love the way you dismiss this overpriced sale, without knowing the 25% discount, but that was their fault! But, then, I laughed so hard when you were looking at the portraits and you said, “the black kid is worth more”. Hey, that’s just info that has value. Thanks for taking us along, always a treasure of good advice! ❤️

    In my area, estate sales are often priced at and above retail on Day 1. Day 2: 25% off. Day 3: 50% off. A few that have "everything goes" will have a Day 4 at 75% off and then in the last 30 minutes they may announce to fill a plastic grocery bag for $5 (less for clean up crew to haul off to charity, recycling, and the dump). For frugal buyers, going on Day 1 is only for deciding if worth returning once prices are discounted. As mentioned in other videos, best deals are things out of other's sight or recovery of something that someone else hid on Day 1.

    Good evening, George! That epergne, at the go, was a beauty. I used to have a set of six of those paperweight cordials...gave them away. Those old tools would've gotten my attention. I actually use them, and much prefer them to newer tools. They were better made. Loved the Victorian bedroom set, but the price wasn't too good, for an estate sale. I liked that picture frame that was next to the commode. I really liked the New Orleans paintings. I've been to those places. That Empire game table was really nice. I've always liked those, but I've never owned one. Geez...their prices didn't seem very motivated to sell. Loved that bowl, at the church rummage sale, with the waterlilies transfer. The "Reflecting Waterlilies" is my favourite pattern in R S Prussia. You had some unexpected adventures that worked out well. Looked like a fun day. Thanks for the take-along!

    • @TheAntiqueNomad

      I really like that the old tools can stand the torque! The epergne was rather pretty. The bedroom set was pretty as can be, but you'd have to be buying for yourself. New Orleans paintings are a genre in and of thenselves! the water lilies get me too, RS Prussia's are the best. Unexpected fun! Thanks for watching

    The S in Harry S Truman stands for "absolutely nothing", unquote. I always knew antique photos with black sitters sold for more than white sitters, simply because there are fewer of them. That goes double for daguerrotypes, if you can find any. Ask about discounts on a second day. Some sellers don't advertise it. I've made out like a bandit at some professional estate sales where I knew more than the seller did, especially if I was among the first in the door. Gotten gold, Meissen etc for pennies that way. 19:40 My machine THAT I STILL USE is sitting there. George went past it without a comment, but those old steel-case Singers are wonderful to use. Boat anchors to resell unfortunately.

    Thanks for the tag along. When I was about 10-11 y.o. I made a comment to a stern old auntie we didn't see very frequently about a fellow in an old portrait in her house (also happened to be in an oval convex mirror) saying off handedly who was that black fellow, and was he a relation of ours (meaning mine really)? Her tone got pretty cross, she gave me one of her withering looks, and said that he most certainly was not 'black', and that that particular branch of the family tree just had some darker skinned Italians and Sicilians, with whom our more direct relations had intermarried. Hmm? I changed the topic and moved on not particularly caring one way or the other, but the old hand tinted/painted photo sure looked like he could have been black to me. Heard a little ire in your voice at that first sale, always have to remember it's their stuff now, and they can price things any way they choose (and not be able to sell it too as a consequence), and as far as not mentioning discounts, maybe they are just bad at sales, many people are actually.

    I would have loved to have the name idea for the B’s or any county in Kentucky. As an amateur genealogist myself I am asked to look up names in my area from others seeking information. It is something that all good genealogists do because you will need help from many people along the way. Plus my ex-husband’s family was from Northern Kentucky (Boone County) a lady in the family was killed stepping off a curb in Northern Kentucky. I suspect that she was in her cups.

    Idk, I’m not a reseller, but since Charles became King and all the royal drama going on, there have been a lot of vids and shorts and articles about Princess Diana. I’m thinking that maybe picking up a few commemorative items might not be bad idea. When William becomes king there may be a market for it. They already are comparingPrincess Kate to her late mother in law. Couldn’t hurt to buy and sit on it to see.

    George, when u spoke of the Taylor Smith Taylor, from early 60's, you mentioned peo thinking there was less lead in the white glaze. There is a question here 😊 I have wondered if there is lead in the glass used to create Depression glass. And if lead was used, is it ok to use the serving pieces ?

    I have a few pieces of Desert Rose with the earliest stamp, clean and not a chip or crack anywhere. Not sure how to price it but I'm hoping it will do well.

      George,@@TheAntiqueNomad Do they ever forge this stuff? When I first found these pieces I first thought they were too good to be true, how could 1940's dishware look so good? And why isn't it in somebody's collection? I passed over the pieces for days before finally pulling the trigger.

    Did you rub your teeth on the manger figure to see if it was gritty like ceramic? You did some technique to find out and didn't mention it.
