A few of us up here in rural Canada had looked into container homes .. developing is not economically feasible for our climate.
Consulted an engineer. They’re not designed to support weight once openings are cut so they have to be re-engineered for weight and strength. They have no breathability for heat, cold, moisture. Moving them is not cost effective. Etc, etc … In the end it’s cheaper and easier to build a small house. That’s why the trend hasn’t caught on in a bigger way.
Nice channel … prefer your other one 😊

    Great collab with WWR!
I've actually followed Dana and Lou regularly since they bought the sailboat awhile back -- Imo those were some of the most seriously amazing videos, especially their first (and alas last) big crossing! If you haven't seen it, it's EPIC and ought to take first prize at the film festivals.
Container homes can make a lot of sense, but so can other kit build homes which might be nicer in many ways and might even end up being more economic, especially for off-grid(ish) living. Myself, being older (or maybe just not up to that much work), I'll probably take the easy way and buy something modest in Mexico or Ecuador someday soon-ish. Hopefully my old, not-too-large compact SUV gets me everywhere I want to go....
    Cheers!...from North Vancouver

It's insane that people in US need to leave in a container.
I know that some may do it because it looks fun, but most just don't have enough money to buy a real house. And it is sad.
Btw, there are a bunch of videos where they proof with numbers that building a house from containers doesn't make a lot of sense

If you're going to consider buying an older home be sure to do research on lead and renovation precautions esp with a baby. The dangers are far understated and sadly most professionals want to do things the cheap and easy way which means higher danger. My daughter ended up with lead poisoning when our contractor said it was fine to replace windows on our 1920 home without precautions and we didn't even know enough to question that.

So i know of a family up in the North woods that pretty much have become addicted to building with shipping containers…. It started out with a single container up on blocks … from there to something like what you see here…. Wood heated, powered by a battery bank charged by either generator, or by tractor with water pumped from a local creek using a sump pump into giant pallet size containers…. When the decision came to run electrical , dig a well and attempt to live there year round they moved the three containers into a triangle into a foundation of piers , adding connecting yurts at the three corners and a set of sliding doors on both sides of one of the containers.
AFTER rhat the added two more containers to make a diamond with a central hall. The following couple of years found them adding four more container two at a time making first a rhombus than a giant triangle of four smaller traingles , moving the three yurts back to the far corners and covering over the central triangle with similar material you see here. After this they added three more containers atop the original triangle with a staircase in a corner of the inside triangle leading up to it, shifting that rain cover up one level with window holes with hinged shutter to create a three sided look out deck.
After that they roofed over the central triangle with a glass pyramid, sealed the upper level turning the central area into a temp controlled greenhouse with each container upstairs becoming its own bedroom.
Few years later one of bedrooms upstairs was sacrificed to so that the outer triangle it faced could be decked over. The triangle under it was sealed and turned into living space illuminated by a skylight that was actually a picnic table built into the deck above.
It was at this point that the lower levels outer walled were banked with gravel along most of the edges and made into terraced flower and vegetable beds with just casement windows. The two remaining remaining triangles were made into a pool in one and a hot tub and sauna in the other.
The last container builds involve slicing two container in half at opposing angle.. swapping the pieces and reconnecting them then hoisting them up onto the second level to make ^ shaped bedrooms that have their back ends hang out in midair so now the house has two yurt shaped bedrooms on the back corners…. , a yurt shaped front entrance that flows into a living space with a skylight coming through the deck above. Its back wall flows into the kitchen container and through it into the central courtyard to the left of the court yard is a pass through into a hot tub and Sauna area, to the right is a pass through into a pool area with the back corners of each opening into a yurt style bedroom …. Two stairwells in the corners of the courtyards lead to one straight and one bent bedroom, plus opposite sides of module that is a the room that overlooks both the inner courtyard and the outer second floor deck.
(Much of the original first floor containers have since been repurposed into bathrooms, utilities office , etc
The last addition was a giant rolled like what you see on the side of an RV that rolls out from atop the second level NON BEDROOM on cables to two large timber poles in the yard . This can provide both shade and rain cover to the deck ….
The original couple that started building it are retired now and spend the bulk of their time traveling or visiting the families of their children that live out of state. However the property is still owned and occupied by two brothers who married best friends wives and they are building a new guest cottage out of shipping containers, but using right angles this time

What is the benefit of building in a shipping container? It seems like there are a lot of downsides (loss off structural integrity since they were not built to have windows and doors cut out, you dont know what was shipped in there and if there is residue from hazardous materials). Not meant in a mean way, I always enjoy your videos, just curious.

Nothing romantic, but doable. I had an outside toilet when I lived in the country house back in Russia. It was NOT compost one. In summer time, we had to put chorine powder in it to avoid the odor that attracted the flies. It was rather cold to use it in winter time. So at night we used pots and had to empty them in the morning. Definitely much more work. Life has changed, it is difficult to go back to more primitive ways after experiencing all the comfort of modern life style.

The surroundings are indeed stunning! But I assume they rely on a car for every little thing, from groceries to seeing friends or visiting a café, or preschool. And their son will have to get driven everywhere until he's old enough to get his own license and probably car. It's certainly peaceful but I think I myself prefer a city with all the amenities.
It's hard to find a middle ground, the video you made before your great adventure about the little island with public transport, privacy and being close to a city seems like the perfect combination of everything.
And you can see Leah's little bump when she's standing outside the car in the clip folding clothes. Exciting!
