Pia is hand down the best Elisabeth ever! The little details she puts into the performance are a treat to watch. Her voice is just right, not too high and pitchy but also not too dark, it's just right, and sound convincing enough as both young and old Elisabeth. And her acting as young Sisi is so adorable! I notice she tries to make her voice sound younger for the young Sisi scenes too, the dedication... And her older Sisi is also perfect, not overly melancholy and weepy or outright cranky, but bitter and exhausted in a very subtle way. Overall Pia's older Elisabeth thrives in subtlety, which I find to be a lot more fitting and enjoyable than some other actresses whose acting are too obvious and kitschy.
I saw the original in Vienna Austria 3 months after it opened in Jan of 93. At the time I spoke very little German, but was fully moved by the performance. Saw the same production back then in Stuttgart and I have to say it's the best production of Elisabeth I've ever seen! great stage technology, especially in the scene "on deck of the sinking world" when the stage turned and lifted... super cool!! Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to experience uwe as Death in Stuttgart, but Pia as Elisabeth!!! it was just gorgeous!! it is my absolute favorite musical!!!
Thank you so much to upload this ! And thank you for the subtitles ! Pia is amazing ! Can we take a moment to appreciate the note at 43:42 ?!? And how Pia can totally plays a 16 yo girl and 2 hours later a 60 yo woman ?! Thanks 😘💖
Eh even if they did bring it to the US, it wouldn't be nearly as successful as in Europe, or even Asia. Even if the production would be as good or even better than this one.
I see some big problems with the public in the US to bring it here (which may or may not be true for other anglophonic countries). 1. Our school systems are absolute crap -- especially when it comes to history. 2. Broadway producers can't eveil handle vampires (ever) and rarely greenlight anything without a happy ending. So, death being a character and haunting Sisi all her life, killing her children, driving her into madness... not exactly what producers or Walstreet want to hear. They would prefer something obscenely silly instead. Or, at very least, the Romy Schneider films. 3. There's too much of a trend in American media of rewriting lead female characters to just be the actress in real life (Anastasia became Altomare and gone is the sarcastic Russian girl raised in a Soviet orphanage), or how she wants to be seen (Belle became Emma Watson's public image and gone is the character we all know and love, the 1994 Broadway adaptation is far superior). I don't trust our writers to be able to handle it these days. I would adore having a /good/ English language production of Elisabeth, but I don't think Broadway, or America in general, has what it takes. Maybe another anglophonic country can do a decent job though.
Thank you so much for uploading this and for taking the time to translate it! It's such a beautiful musical and I wish they'd bring it to the west end. Wish I knew what Pia said during her speech but ah well, was still emotional. Thank you again!! x
Aah, I've been doing a lot of research on Elisabeth, her life story is just so interesting. I stumbled upon this musical and I just had to watch it. Thank you for uploading this, it's very much appreciated!
I discovered this video a few months back and have fallen in love with this musical since then. I would’ve only been a year old when this performance originally took place. Wish I could go back in time and watch this live ( tho I would need to learn german first ). Which this musical has inspired me to learn since I know theirs no english version of Elisabeth unfortunately.
I love it 😍 I came here because I was seeking more information about this musical because there is gonna be a new version in South of Korea from #Leo #VIXX and #ParkHyungShik , but wow I fell in love with the original version 😍😍😍🎶 so wonderful! I would like to watch it in live! ❤️😍 I can't wait to see the new version from Korea. Thanks to upload this musical and dubbed!! 😍😍❤️ I really love the story !

It's also great for training your ear for German! I actually found this musical and Tanz der Vampire back when I was starting to learn German back in high school. ^.^
As for the subtitles, thank you for having them in the Original language! Subsequent languages are soooo much easier to do after the original, not only because getting the text there to translate from is helpful (which it is, immensely so, I feel that) but also hecause all the timestamps are there and one just has to do that translation after. Also, anyone know who played Young Rudolph? His voice gives me chills with its innocence

Hey sorry this I didn't see this for ages! I'm sure you've heard youtube got rid of their community subtitles system :'( however I couldn't find any sign of polish subtitles before then? If this is still relevant I could add them if you share a file with the translation?
From what I've heard, it was shot by Pia's father semi-professionally for archival purposes and got leaked from there! But you can find it other places in the internet - there's the exact same video up on UA-cam just with Chinese subtitles that's been up since 2014
@@redjenny8652 Oh, that's happened! Thanks for answering. If so, it seems that where Pia was filmed there is no Elisabeth DVD and only live recording CDs have an official license... So sad.
Here's a google drive link to just the video drive.google.com/file/d/1MUrD-Z3OkEHqEkRaC6ErTxiisYl_ozgx/view?usp=sharing , though I can't get captions to work on it (but you can download the subtitles files from the 'add translations' option in the menu next to the add to playlist button). So my best guess is a proshot that was never properly released and either was just sold in the theatre or got leaked.
not really, but you can open the transcript (with the menu next to the add to playlist button) and have the transcript by the side in a different language to the subtitles :)
