    Hey Neil great video
    Maybe of help I've just changed my heater fan as dircribed in your vid .... But I managed to do it whilst sitting in the passenger seat, using a mirror on the floor it was dead easy, small light added to the visibility.
    I'm 6ft 2" and got at it quite easily.
    Took 38 mins to change fan and resistor and put back together.
    Happy Days

      There's a single small bolt holding the resistor in place, once you remove it, the whole shebang should come out and you'll be able to see the resistor and where it connects to the cabling. To remove it from the cable, there is a little clip on the long side of the plastic plug that you have to depress. I reckon I might do a video on the resistor as I have had a few questions on it.

    • @NeillWylie
      @NeillWylie  3 роки тому +1

      Heya Paul. Well to be honest I guess it depends on wether it annoys you enough to want it looked into haha. Maybe you have an awesome stereo that could drown it out haha.
      If it's an electrical buzzing, I would personally maybe try disconnecting the electrics, checking them for any physical damage such as charring or burning of the contacts etc. If they seem ok, try re-connecting them and see if it fixes it.
      If it's the fan itself or the piping that that the air goes through, you could try checking them for debris and the fitment to see if theres anything that could be out of place and causing the buzz.
      Best of luck matey.

    • @NeillWylie
      @NeillWylie  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Tahir. When I was having problems I checked things in this order.
      1. I first checked the fuse box in the engine bay. If I remember right it was a Large Green 30a Fuse in position F5.
      2. I think it's worth checking out all of the plugs and sockets connections for the parts. Some may have come loose. Sometimes this is as simple as unplugging and re plugging them. Other times they may need a little clean.
      3. I checked the resistor which had blackened and melted contacts on the pole that controls position 1 on the blower motor in my case. This stopped position 1 from working in my fan. To check the resistor you would need a multi meter and would need to check the connections from the pins to the poles. If its visibly damaged, I think it would be safe to assume that you need a new resistor.
      4. The fan itself. Sometimes like I showed in the video, the copper commutator can become clogged from residue from the soft, black, carbon brushes. If the Copper commutator is black, give it a good clean. If the fan isn't free and easy spinning, this can cause the resistor to burn out.
      5. It may be the actual switch on the dash. Unfortunately I don't have experience working with this bit of kit. If I had no luck with the fuse, plugs, resistor and fan, this would have been my final check.
      Best of luck Tahir!!

    Hi Neill, I'm in Aberdeen and fan just stopped a couple of days ago - where did you order the replacement unit from? I just got quoted about £350-450 worst case for an auto electrician to do this job for me. With this video, I feel very confident that I could do the work myself. Thanks, Greg

    • @NeillWylie
      @NeillWylie  3 роки тому +2

      Hey hey. If you haven't already done so, remember to check your fuses and resistor first before replacing the fan as they're a lot cheaper. You will be able to see the broken fuse or the burning and charring on the resistor poles if this is the case and their replacement will save you some money if they are the problem.
      I can't remember exactly where I got this fan now but you can get the fan here www.eurocarparts.com/heater-motor/?promo=MID60 at the moment 12/01/2021 and apply the code MID60 to your checkout to get the fan for about 70 quid. If you look on ebay you may be able to get it cheaper. Have fun and best of luck.

    • @NeillWylie
      @NeillWylie  4 роки тому +1

      If the resistor is new I think it might be the fan itself. If the fan is stiff enough to stop it from rotating moving, the resistor can overheat and burn out. If it's neither the fan or the resistor that are the problem, then it may be the switch that changes between fan speeds though in my experience, this is unlikely. I don't think it's the fuses that have gone as you have said it's still working occasionally. I suppose you could remove the fuse inside the car and in the engine bay to give them a clean and re-seat them if you really wanted?
      Personally, I would remove the resistor and check it for signs of burning out. I would also remove the fan and take it out of the casing to check that the fan spins easy and free. I would also check the connection between the brushes and fan motor to make sure they arent fouled. Best of luck!

    could this be the reason to why my heaters don’t heat up quickly?

    • @NeillWylie
      @NeillWylie  3 роки тому

      If your heaters don't heat up quickly, that is likely to be another issue. There is an "Interior heater matrix" that the air is passed through before it enters the cabin. If there is air in this heater matrix, or if none of the heated coolant is passed through this heater matrix, then the air will remain cold. If you check online for a way to bleed air from the coolant system in particular the heater matrix I have mentioned, it is likely you'll get heat again. If you don't, further investigation will be required.
