Thanks for sharing. Leo is one of my favorites he inspires me in making music. Never dull anytime listening to just one of his songs over and over, even going to sleep with his music playing, then waking up to it. What a blessing you have been Mr. Kottke.
First time I saw Leo live was in Monterey in 1977. Then years later when I was a dad I took my then 12-year-old son to see him in Monterey again. Always awesome.
I was in the Navy, on a sub. Went to sub school in Groton, Connecticut. I saw Leo once in Pittsburgh, many years ago. He was having a little autograph signing after the show and I waited for him to come out along with a few other fans. When it was my turn to get his autograph, we shook hands, and he said: "Do I know you?"
My Mom took me to see Mr. Kotke in Cedar Rapids Iowa in 1978, I was 15 years old and loved every second of his wonderful playing and story telling. I found my passion in Music, I guess I'm a Singer/Songwriter, but I just like to tease the tones out of anything I get my hands on. Here's to you Leo, thanks for the inspiration.
I've never heard him tell this story before. Had to look up where Ashland, Ky is, and it all checks out. Having done a very minimal bit of hitch-hiking back in the early (19)70s, I had some equivalent experiences with "interesting" drivers.

I took my Mom to see him in Amsterdam, Sonesta Koepelzaal, around the same time! Great inspiration indeed.

Such a gentleman. A genuinely spiritual cat.

My favorite line:
"I have a big head, but a tiny brain. If I roll over too fast at night...I can hear it."
Kindness and love was going bye
