  • Project Avalanche is nearly here, and it hopes to be the be all and end all of motion design and broadcast graphics. Imagine After Effects combined with C4D and Photoshop that runs in realtime. Releasing next year (fingers crossed).
    Bit of an impromptu video, I saw this morning's Unreal Fest 2023 talk about Project Avalanche and had to make this!

    Rewatching a day later I'm just noting the bunch of stuff I saw in the talk that I didn't mention in the video... let me know if you caught something else, or if you're involved with dev feel free to reply!
    Reactive Design
    - like setting boundaries for text so it auto squashes or auto resizes the lower thirds. This is something that I'm really looking forward to, yes it's always possible in other programs like AE but feels like it's something I have to program around the internal logic of AE (compared to say, InDesign or web design). Might be just as complex as AE but the examples they showed give me hope that it's artist friendly.
    Texture interaction / visibility of material nodes
    - I know it'll change how I use Unreal, but I am glad I've spent the last few years getting familiar with Unreal's Material system and interrelated stuff just because the ability to crack open whatever magic that Avalanche is doing to enable 2D is going to be invaluable. It'd be like actually seeing the shader math for how AE puts your textures on the screen.
    Progression in the Playlist
    - the full state tree kinda blows my mind, but I also love the idea of having a presentation that I can step through using this progression system. Will probably be one of my first experiments when it gets released.

    Hi, great video, just one question from someone that's getting started in Unreal (and graphics in general I guess): Why is realtime important? I do mainly stuff for events and to me it seems logical that if you want reliability when outputting the video you render it to a high quality video unless the end result needs to be changed in real time too (audio reactive stuff for example)

    • @fastchaostv
      @fastchaostv  10 місяців тому +3

      Hmm well it’s a question that I think would get a different answer for every person asked, but for me it’s a few things:
      Iteration - my creative process works best when I get a lot of shots at trying stuff out. The more times I make something, the better it becomes usually. Real-time means more iteration.
      Working is fun - when I’m in another program and I tell it to do something and I have to wait for 5-10 seconds while it does it, it’s just a drag. You definitely get used to it, but it’s like sitting in a good quality chair - when you get used to immediate feedback, it’s so hard to go backwards.
      Reactivity - for an event, being able to react to the moment is so much fun, which admittedly is partly cos I love electronic music and performance haha! I totally understand the reliability thing - but you can output the unreal stuff as a video backup if needed and still keep the reactive potential and try to make it robust.
      Anyway looking at the length of this reply maybe it should be a video haha

    Always a good day when FastChaos drops a vid. I've been dying for them to add these features. the UE to AE pipeline has been such a chore. I've been particularly wanting to be able to do line animation as is very common in map animations in AE. Can I achieve this in avalanche?

    • @fastchaostv
      @fastchaostv  11 місяців тому +2

      I mean, all signs point to yes… I haven’t gotten access to it yet but it looks a lot more advanced in the 2D side of things than I expected. At the very least you should be able to duplicate an object along a spline and then reveal the duplicates one by one.

    • @fastchaostv
      @fastchaostv  4 місяці тому

      Hmm depends on what you want to create. You can use it in the same way that people use 3D in AE, where they just load in models bought off turbosquid, or there are also modeling tools now built into unreal that can be used for a lot more than people generally know about now. Worth a bit of experimenting to see whether it fits your workflow
