There were women's regiments containing these little PO biplanes as well as twin engined bomber or fighters. Some of the regiments were promoted to Guards Regiments (a high honour) and many of the pilots were awarded the highest military award: the Hero of the Soviet Union. One of the women's fighter pilots had been transferred to a mixed regiment where she fought alongside her lover. After he was killed in a training accident she fought alone. Her name was Lydia but she was also known as the Rose of Stalingrad, White Rose and the Lone Hunter. She holds the record for the highest number of confirmed kills of any women pilot to this day. There's a great book about the Night Witches (called Night Witches) I highly recommend.

My history teacher in highschool actually told us of the "Nacht Häxen". He always included, for each segment, some cool things to read about that wasn't in the curriculum. I remember the Night Witches in particular because that was the one time he actually elaborated on a topic. Every test had a short essay on a list of topics provided with the test. Usually there were some topics relating to the extra subjects. For this segment maybe 80% wrote about the Night Witches. That story made a big impact on our class. And this was before Sabaton was a thing.

To put this in context: 23 000 missions, 3 planes each, 2 woman per plane ... so out of 138 000 woman in the sky, only 32 never came home... that is some epic stats right there! There woman were extraordinary. Much respect to them.

Hello, gents! To clarify a couple of things:
First, the "Night Witches" is one of the most accurate records about any unit, in any army, during World War II. The reason? Soviet military protocols. Those protocols dictated that any service member who was merely MIA was not to be awarded any military service awards. This was due to the nature of the service member's fate being unknown, as it was not known if they were KIA, deserted, or simply walked away. The Commissar of the Regiment went out to find where her girls had gone down so that they would get any awards they were due for their service, even if awarded post-humously. In the process, she created a record of her unit that still stands as to how accurate it really is.
This story is now truly history, as the last Night Witch died in 2017.
May their bravery and sacrifice, their service to the cause of fighting Nazi Germany, never be forgotten.
Edit: One of my favorite tracks by Sabaton is Defense of Moscow, about how the Russians defended Moscow during the culmination of Operation: Typhoon during Operation: Barbarossa in 1941.

It’s a very touching story for sure!!
If you want to continue on the Russian theme with Sabaton I can recommend ”The attack of the dead men” also a crazy story!
Please also react to ”The Lion from the north” and ”Poltava”, songs from the same album as a ”En livstid i krig” (about the 30 years war). That album focusing och the rise and fall of the Swedish empire and are considered to be the best album from Sabaton. So why not learn some swedish history and react to the whole album from start to end 😉

History we were never taught. Fantastic tribute. Phenomenal band! I homeschooled my kiddo and I used Sabaton History as the starting point for my teen's grade 11 History classes. It is a huge challenge to get historical information without the North American bias. Sabaton does an excellent job of shining a light on historical moments most have forgotten. My father laughed at your description of your teachers - his also had all served and he got them four or five years after they'd been back in Canada. One of his had been on the River Kwai.

Sabaton are the best teachers of history PERIOD!! You get to experience what those people (most lost to history) went through and suffered. Forget all the "important" people found in those dusty history books, this is real life stories that relate to anyone. Here as a vet I can't comprehend the valor and grit these women had. Flying old bi-plane of wood and cloth that were a match waiting to ignite and taking every disadvantage and turning it in their favor. Lest we forget they made multiple bombing run on each duty run they were involved in. Thank you for your service...now get lost while we enjoy the Victory Parade you made possible...I am sure these women could of flown whatever planes were used in the parade, but no lets forget about them. Luckily Sabaton works at finding these heroes and puts their story to music to teach you about real history. Next gents try the very sad Price of a Mile (about the British battle at Passchendaele where 500,000 men on both sides died to gain 6 miles of the front) (ua-cam.com/video/LOrlRvBV59E/v-deo.html). "Screaming Eagles" is an older one but another great one from Sabaton, with another well-made video to boot. It tells nearly the entire history of the 101st Airborne during World War II, but largely centers around their performance at the Battle of the Bulge when they were cut off and completely encircled by the Germans (who outnumbered them more than 2 to 1). The Germans sent a message to their commander demanding they surrender or be annihilated, and the exchange remains one of the most iconic in American history.
"To the U.S.A. Commander of the encircled town of Bastogne:
The fortune of war is changing. This time the U.S.A. forces in and near Bastogne have been encircled by strong German armored units. More German armored units have crossed the river Ourthe near Ortheuville, have taken Marche and reached St. Hubert by passing through Hompre-Sibret-Tillet. Libramont is in German hands.
There is only one possibility to save the encircled U.S.A. troops from total annihilation: that is the honorable surrender of the encircled town. In order to think it over a term of two hours will be granted beginning with the presentation of this note.
If this proposal should be rejected one German Artillery Corps and six heavy A. A. Battalions are ready to annihilate the U.S.A. troops in and near Bastogne. The order for firing will be given immediately after this two hours term.
All the serious civilian losses caused by this artillery fire would not correspond with the well-known American humanity.
    The German Commander."
    "To the German Commander:
    NUTS!
    The American Commander"

Each mission of the Night Witches was essentially a suicide mission. They carried no parachute, if the plane was landed, crashed behind enemy lines they were to fight to the death ( that’s why they had pistols), because if they escaped & made it back thru enemy lines they were immediately arrested, interrogated by the Commander and then executed for being a spy( this was the same for Russian male pilots). Russia was in a do or die fight and just could not take the chance. 40-1 Live at Woodstock Poland is a must see and is my suggestion. Stay Safe Rock On!🙏🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Yes how!? I heard this was a hard story to get information about, not easy to get information out of old Russia/Soviet from what i heard.
But they did do an amazing job :)

I remember Joe 90, I loved the car but hated every thing else apart from the theme tune. Ah Memory’s 👍

There is a parallel band... Eluveitie is a Swiss band that is a bit focused on the Roman invasion of Gaulia. To the point, a fair chunk of their work is performed in Helvetian Gal, a very dead language. The band frontman, Chrigel Glanzmann has worked with linguistics professors to try to as much as can be known get the phrasing and pronunciations right. They have songs that are about particular players, both from the Gauls and the Romans, particular battles, or day to day mythos and doings of the Gaulish people. They are at last count an 8 piece, with traditional metal instruments and traditional, including a hurdygurdy. Some stuff is quite metalcore, a bit of an earhole assault, some is middle of the road, some is ballady. Inis Mona, Thousandfold or Omnos would be good starting places with the official videos.

Even better, the historians I've seen react to Sabaton's videos say they are "extremely accurate." They do it right.
I'd check out the official for Attack Of The Dead Men ua-cam.com/video/-AFdwoyNT24/v-deo.html it, this, and a couple of stories I heard from a Russian soldier himself have thoroughly convinced me that Russian forces do not fuck around - I pray we never end up at war with them.

The cover war history in a none judgmental way. The germans of ww2 are spoken of in the same light as the allied forces. Look at smoken snakes or the soldier of 3 armies
