Right on! A bit of a warning... This is a much older version of Procreate. It's probably mostly fine, but some of the UI and capabilities have changed.
Hi!! First of all, I watched all this technique videos and I love them! I've always had trouble with shadows on skin and I already started practicing with your advices. 😃 I noticed that you have the astropad app! I wanted to buy it but someone told me that it wasn't worth it because it doesn't work very well... what would you recommend me?? Thank you!! 😊
Thanks! Glad you like them! Astropad is definitely a harder learning curve than normal PS or normal Procreate. That said, it actually works really well. I use it directly plugged in with a lightning cable and it's awesome. Other than the usability retraining you have to do, it's pretty remarkable.
Amazing video, firstly watched 4, now coming from begining. As academic painter who switched to digital this videos are amazing its not about drawing, its mastering the program ^_^ ty
Hey! Awesome video, love all of your videos and your art style. I noticed you were able to pull up your canvas in inches instead of entering pixels. How did you change from pixels? I am using everything the same, but your create menu is even different. Thanks for all of your videos have been a huge inspiration and helpful!
Maybe try updating the app. Also, I just tap on one of my presets here. Tap on "New Canvas" instead and the rest should be self explanatory. Hope that helps!
I was referring to things like screen protectors. People use screen protectors to add drag to the screen so they have a little more control over the stylus.
I feel a bit dumb. Even tho I ve tried to adjust as you show in the video, my pencil is still way to different from yours. I ve always thought it might be the canvas size but I ve put it 12" x 8" and still have the same problem. Every pencil is way bigger and looks different. Maybe the German version comes with a different base setting ?
That would be weird. My canvas is 12"x8" at 300 dpi with the pencil settings you saw. Don't forget where my current brush size is based on the slider on the left, too.
Hi Mike, I love your work. I have watched every video multiple times to see your process of colouring your drawings. I can colour relations very well, however my line art is appalling. I know you said that you are self taught, but do you have any resources or recommendations on improving my line art? Thanks again!!!
It really just comes down to goal-based practice. Figure out what it is your lineart is missing and practice goals specific to that. If you want to still get a piece out of it and not just randomly mark up a blank canvas, try to create some art that specifically features what you're trying to practice. You'll get focused practice AND something to show off.
Did you make any other changes to your mod soft brush (in the airbrushing section) The size is max by default on my version of procreate and my mod soft brush thumbnail looks nothing like yours. I've tried to play with some of the settings but I can't get my soft brush to work and look like yours. thanks
ok so this may be a dumb question and I may have just missed it somewhere in your videos, but how do you duplicate the one brush to make a new one using it as a base? Sorry if you've covered it and if it's super simple!
On the iPad Pro there is built-in palm rejection when using the Apple Pencil. If you aren't using both of those, this won't happen. If you are using both of these and palm rejection isn't working, there may be some other settings you'll have to adjust.
Hey mike did you have any trouble with resolution for UA-cam videos? I'm trying to post my time lapse and it's either got 2 black borders around on each side, or the video quality or image quality is really bad. I can't find any posts or anything explaining how to get the best quality out of procreate
Here's the issue with Procreate: It uses video resolutions when capturing the recording. So if you are drawing something that is taller than it is wide, it's recording resolution will be locked at the max height of, say, 1080p. Which is only 1080 pixels tall. If you are drawing something in landscape the resolution is much better because you are maximizes your usage of the pixel ratio. Also, if you go into the setting on your iPad and go to the procreate section, you can up the resolution of the recording. That can help, too.
Hey where did you get your fat pencil and phat brush? Or did you make them if so could you maybe put them up on the forums or something I would REALLY like them
Obviously I watched the video, 2 times might I add, otherwise I wouldn't have known about the brushes. I tried to duplicate the brushes my self but it's just not the same.
i have question is procreate app better or Astropad ?....... cuz i like procreate but something is telling me maybe there's other apps out there no one herd of
Astropad and Procreate are essentially unrelated in terms of features. Astropad is simply an interface for using your iPad as a tablet. You still need a Mac and an Art Application like Photoshop for Astropad to work. Procreate is a standalone Art Application.
I don't have my iPad on my right now to check, but I think you just tap the name of the brush when you are viewing its settings. I don't think it can be done with existing Procreate brushes, just new or duplicated ones.
Cool. I will have to Google how to do that, cause making a new pen off a preexisting one is not super intuitive in Procreate. (I am probably missing a super obvious button haha)
Thanks! Nope. The amount of work it would take to give you that pencil is about 1000 times more than what it would be to adjust that one slider. Give it a shot!
Actually, I'll still need it. 1) you can't see my hands, so a camera will still be beneficial and 2) I did a 90 minute drawing last night and Procreate failed to save out the live video. I hope it works out in the future, though, because it's a nice addition to the process.
Your video would be much shorter if you didn't spend over 1/3rd of it introducing it and talking about how it was hard to make it short... just get on with it!
Love the dog in the back
Yes me too... totally made my day! Dogs can be so funny and melt your heart and can instantly change your view on life
Mike: HER EVERYONE!
*the dog wakes up* haha
Haha... yeah. She knows "on the phone" voice.
sergio Ar was about to say the same thing
I saw that and laughed instantly
sergio Ar he’s like who the he’ll are talking to bro LoL
So cute
Good way to make everyone smile from ear to ear. *start talking * dog head appears.
*the dog is the star of the show now.*
just brought the ipad pro after watching your previous vids and these series of narrative tutorials are so helpful. Thx!
Awesome! Hope you dig it.
I am SO greatful for you taking the time to do this video-series - Thanks!
Happy to! Glad you like it.
Just started this series as I’m trying to figure out Procreate, thank you so much for these video’s!!
Right on! A bit of a warning... This is a much older version of Procreate. It's probably mostly fine, but some of the UI and capabilities have changed.
I dont know why but it is sooooo funny that the dogs head pops up the minute you start talking. Diggin the tuts. Thanks!
You're so patient and understanding to explain those things repeatedly to us hahaha I'm very thankful
Hehe... thanks for digging!
And even in the fall of 2018, your dog is still making people laugh. So cute.
Dude. This is awesome!!!!!! Been following your techniques for months now. Thanks for taking time to do this.
Great tips. I'll have to use some these in my work
Thanks Mike this tutorials are very helpful and motivating!
Glad you like them! Thanks for subscribing for so long!
Hey! I didn't know you made videos! super rad! Gotta watch all of them now
Woot! At least you found them! hehe.
You deserve a lot more subscribers!
And right after Procreate released 3.2 with screen capture today. Awesome tutorials, though.
Auto Nin haha...was thinking the same thing, screen capture with face recording. Maybe we will see live demos now *wink wink*
Yep! I'd be mad if I wasn't so excited, hehe.

The minute the dog lifted up his head I made direct eye contact with him for 10 whole seconds and zoning out
This tutorial was perfect! Very helpful in my opinion.
Amazing video, firstly watched 4, now coming from begining.

Very happy to help. Thanks a lot for watching them all!

Couldn't wait! Thanks bro
It's so cool! Thank you very much for these videos!
Thanks!
I sure will, and I will put up a video unboxing it be sure to check it out
Hey Mike, what did you mean when you said "People have asked me about 'control', I've gotten used to Wacom devices so I don't use any of that."?
I was referring to things like screen protectors. People use screen protectors to add drag to the screen so they have a little more control over the stylus.
Lol that dogs like “who the fuck are you talking to?”
Love the background music!
I love your last name! Hehe
I feel a bit dumb. Even tho I ve tried to adjust as you show in the video, my pencil is still way to different from yours. I ve always thought it might be the canvas size but I ve put it 12" x 8" and still have the same problem. Every pencil is way bigger and looks different.

Incase you don't know, when you swipe at the brushes bar thing (pencil, ink....) there are more brushes
Yep. I use those brushes in other videos.
What size is the iPad Pro you're using?

Mike Henry Thank you very much. I actually did a piece inspired by your art style. Check out Newsomedrawsthings on Deviantart if you are interested!!!
Thank you so much! I needed a video like this.
Great!
Awesome Tutorial!! You have a new subscriber!! Looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks!
Thank you for the awesome videos, they have really helped me a lot!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this video. So detailed. Amazing.

Heya... No, I haven't altered it beyond that. I know a few of the airbrushes have different max sizes. Try checking them all.
Dog was like "Who is he talking too"?!? HAAA!
Thank you soooo much for these videos!
Do you need an ipad pro for this? Can you do digital art with a ... regular Ipad?
Hi MIKE,, how do you set your pencil curve and do you leave the pencil setting in the brush settings alone. Ie pressure effecting size etc
Heya! Yeah, I don't adjust the pencil curve or the pencil settings. I will adjust the flow in the hard brush occasionally like I do in Photoshop.
They just released the procreate pocket for iphone but theres no stylus available so whats the point? How i am supposed to use it?
ok so this may be a dumb question and I may have just missed it somewhere in your videos, but how do you duplicate the one brush to make a new one using it as a base? Sorry if you've covered it and if it's super simple!
Heya! I don't think I've covered this. You swipe the brush to the right or left (I think it's the left) and the option appears.
Mike Henry how can I make the fat brush what should I choose in shape source and grain source ? Please help I’m really lost
thank you for doing this man!!
Thanks for watching!
Quick question??? How do i set it so my hand can be resting on the screen and draw at the same time
On the iPad Pro there is built-in palm rejection when using the Apple Pencil. If you aren't using both of those, this won't happen. If you are using both of these and palm rejection isn't working, there may be some other settings you'll have to adjust.
You sir may have just given me a method that will save me So much time with line thickness
Awesome!
This is helpful thank you, you're a great teacher.

You are most certainly Awesome!
Why thank you!
Ok thanks and do I need the Apple pencil or can I use a regular iPad pen?
You can use various styluses, but the best experience is iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, and Procreate
Hey where did you get your fat pencil and phat brush? Or did you make them if so could you maybe put them up on the forums or something I would REALLY like them
Jester draws did u even watch the video? He explains how he made them
Obviously I watched the video, 2 times might I add, otherwise I wouldn't have known about the brushes. I tried to duplicate the brushes my self but it's just not the same.
That is why I asked the question. I know it may not be answered but I completely forgot about this until you brought it up.
Jester draws oh, ok. Sorry, i just thought u meant what settings. I see your point. Sorry again, and have a nice day :D
Xelexs thank you. Yeah, sorry I got salty. But it's all good dude
What shape and Grain did you use for your modified brushes?
Whatever they originally had.
That cute dog !!!!!
Hah!
very very very nice, you are much good...
congratulations
Thanks!
Dude, you look even younger than I last saw you! :p
Thanks for the videos! I'm always happy to see your process.
Lol! German life is the fountain of youth! How've you been, buddy? Long time no see.
The usual - hustling for work, trying to keep the bills paid! I need to get in on some of that fountain of youth stuff haha.
Kevin Cameron Haha... das ist gut!
i have question is procreate app better or Astropad ?....... cuz i like procreate but something is telling me maybe there's other apps out there no one herd of

I love your hand tattoo btw!
Hehe... thanks!
What kind if iPad Pro do you have?
Wonderful !
Great video, subscribed!
Thanks!
Bid pens shade so well..I'll never diss someone for using them
What brush do u use ?
You had me at ‘bic ballpoint’. I also love my bic, it’s old, almost out of ink..... and I don’t know what refill it takes 😟
Power to the Bics!
Haha🤣🤣 That Dog Reaction tho...
hahahaha cool dog man......yea i'm getting my ipad pro12.9 128GB in Christmas i daydream about it i watch video after video
Congrats! Hope you dig it when you get it.
How do you change the name of a brush?
I don't have my iPad on my right now to check, but I think you just tap the name of the brush when you are viewing its settings. I don't think it can be done with existing Procreate brushes, just new or duplicated ones.
How do you change the color of the lettering Mike?
I'm sorry, I don't know what lettering you're referring to.
👍🏼
Is he using an iPad Pro?
Yes, he is.
Do you have to buy procreatie???
Yep! That shit ain't free! But it is insanely cheap.
Very interesting but your background music is way too loud, it’s hard to stay focused on your demo. Thanks for sharing!
You woke up the dog :( haha
So the Fat Pencil is just the technical pencil with the max size increased?
Yep.
Cool. I will have to Google how to do that, cause making a new pen off a preexisting one is not super intuitive in Procreate.
(I am probably missing a super obvious button haha)
There's like an edit/customize option on the brush itself, you don't need to make a new one
That's what I ended up doing. Worked out making a new one from scratch as well.
Brilliant
Love how your dog sat up.
very helpful !!!! thanks !! SUbbed and liked !!
Thanks!
Dope vids just found ur channel
Thanks!
Hi, Very Nice vidéo, can u share ur fat pencil pls
Thanks! Nope. The amount of work it would take to give you that pencil is about 1000 times more than what it would be to adjust that one slider. Give it a shot!
Awesome !!!!!!, thanks a lot man, you rock!!!, nice beard btw xD
Haha... thanks, sir!
Where can I get the fat pencil
In Procreate! It's just the Technical Pencil with the max size turned up a bit.
I don’t believe this works anymore.. anyway around it?
Nvm go to general settings and drag the page down you’ll see it there. Haha
Check tha dog lol lol
Loveeeeeee the dog hihiiiiii
How can I have fat pencil
O cachorro é sua cara hahaha, maravilhoso !! ha,ha
Your dog😍
And the video bomber is....
Ha!
Dog is my copilot
Ha!
Procreates update lol. Don't need the camera anymore
Actually, I'll still need it. 1) you can't see my hands, so a camera will still be beneficial and 2) I did a 90 minute drawing last night and Procreate failed to save out the live video. I hope it works out in the future, though, because it's a nice addition to the process.
Crap!, now I have to pay for UA-cam RED, finally found something on UA-cam worth downloading.
Ha! Thanks, man.
The music distracts from your lesson. Are you entertaining or teaching.?
Your video would be much shorter if you didn't spend over 1/3rd of it introducing it and talking about how it was hard to make it short... just get on with it!
Is that a 10.5 ipad pro or the bigger size?
12.9"
