      It's not that as parents we don't like talking about the apartheid impact on our lives. I also used to wonder why it was so difficult to talk about the painful experiences. It's because of the depth and the breadth of the trauma brought about by the system, to the extent that one felt it as a deep seated but almost part of one's daily life. You lived and breathed it, so putting it into words was very difficult. During the time, there was so much to deal with in just trying to survive the various aspects of the oppression. Whenever you get someone in their 70s and above to talk to about it, you must look in their eyes and you will see the pain. The video is an illustration of the reason why it will take a lifetime to get rid of the effects of the apartheid system.

    As a white South African born in Durban 1970, I am english speaking with a afrikaans name & surname, mother born in Mauritius and dad born in South Africa, mother and father divorced when I was around 6 months old.
    As I stated I grew up in Durban and I am one of the white persons who held the view of how did I benefit from apartheid... I grew up with a single mother that looked after 3 kids and who never received any maintenance from my dad. She never owned any property so always had to pay rent and it was difficult for her to make ends meet financially, however we never went hungry and always had enough clothes to keep warm.
    After listening to your podcast I now realise that I did indeed benefit from apartheid, we always had electricity and water and attended a decent government school and if needed the government hospitals where able to take good care of us, thank you for enlightening us Dan.
    What I would also like to share as my personal opinion and experience growing up as a english speaking white South african, was that I mainly experienced racist mindsets from afrikaaners (certainly not all), ie when drafted into the army I was exposed to a lot of afrikaaners who in my view where the majority of white South africans.
    What I also experienced was a preference by South african afrikaaners rather wanting to do business with other afrikaaners, hereby feeling english South africans where given less opportunities, obviously not on the scale or even the same wavelength as what black South africans experienced.
    Thank you Dan for your insightful message, I love our country and I love its people, we have such potential if we could work together in recognising the past injustices for what they where and focussing on building a future we can all be proud of which carries opportunity for all of our children and their children.
    I apologise to all my black sisters and brothers for the negative mindsets and prejudices that an apartheid system exposed us to and the negative effects it bore on you. God bless you all, God is good.
    2024 is certainly a big year for this country in determining the direction the country will go, please vote.

      Since when have white folks ever been in denial about anything? Its much of the majority who hide behind the past, race cards and arrogant pride to deflect the fact that they are responsible for their own failures today, why this nation is failing, and why the people are poor, jobless and being murdered, raped and more in droves by their own. And they keep on voting for anyone who makes them believe all they are are innocent victims to whom the world is out to undermine. Just listen to ANC and EFF bullshit and thats all youll ever hear. No nation ever was built by victims. Afrikaners are dont think or feel or do things the same way the African majority does, and you cannot expect them to think or feel like others because they are a different people and because their seen as second rate nobody considers their history. And their history has made them fiercely independent rebels who won't bow to anyone, not even their own, and will take measures into their own hands if need be. There is no time to bitch and moan, there is no need for leadership, there is only building the life you want and moving forward. The complete opposite of much of the majority. And most are not in denial because Afrikaners dont have an inferiority complex.

    Am proud of you, Dan. You are a shining light in a dark tunnel.
    I have always said that apartheid was far more ECONOMICAL than it was POLITICAL. The political oppression, racial segregation, policy making and brutal law enforcement was a means to a glorious end for the white minority. In 2023, we find the vast majority of the black population pretty much stuck in the deep pit of inequality and abject poverty which was so well orchestrated and clinically executed by the fathers of apartheid, a pit whose depth very few can comprehend.
    Apartheid was ruthless in reducing the black population to two things: A labour force and a consumer base for white business. The townships where more than half of the black population now live were initially termed, "Labour camps". They were designed to self destruct and retain the status quo for as long as possible, for the benefit of the white suburb residents. Apartheid's spacial planning might be another interesting topic to explore.
    You have coined it well: White Economic Empowerment.
    Truly, there is no better phrase to describe what apartheid really was!

    I completely resonate with this message. It's easy to overlook and even forget the past. Especially for those who weren't born in that time, and who has no possible understanding of what life was like during that time. Whenever I think of something like this, it sickens me to my stomach.
    The first time I heard something like this was when we attended a town hall meeting in Ikageng (North West) for a documentary on the impact of apartheid on the folks who lived in the rural area. The mme's and ntate's would talk with anguish in their voices about the issues they faced, and the unnecessarily large hurdles they had to jump through for basic tasks. This rattled my cage, and I remember telling my father that I was disappointed in the previous leadership of South Africa, thinking that there was no excuse.
    I was born and raised in what is known as the "Replublic of South Africa". Hence, I was raised with the ideas of sharing, caring for your neighbour, and treating others the way you would want to be treated. No matter the colour of your skin or a persons culture/traditional values. We are all from and for South Africa.
    I choose live my life this way, and will continue to try my best to assist others where I can. There is no way for me to right the wrongs in the past, but I can be the difference for the future.

    One of the things I clearly remember about apartheid was that any white person who wanted a job could get one somewhere. If you were unemployable to private businesses you could always get some sort of government job in the post office or railways. The pay and conditions might not have been great, but your job was virtually guaranteed.
    As a result the unemployment rate amongst whites was always in the low single digits. The implied government job guarantee helped the white population enormously in terms of economic empowerment.
    So is it now the turn of non-white people to benefit from such economic empowerment? If white economic empowerment was morally wrong, does that make black economic empowerment morally right? Should we repeat the mistakes of the past, or try a different path?

      Valid question, people can't divorce their emotions on this topic. If the economic & political structure of the time was slopped unfairly why is that justified today. This really exposes the fact that people view equally in a very twisted way, instead of seeing it as the word suggests they treat it as a revenge mechanism or leverage of some kind.

    Hi Dan, Many thanks for this portion of the history. What happened during those days were surely not easy for my fellow South Africans that went through this time.
    I am here as a committed Christian to establish a prosperous, peaceful country for all of our children. I did not inherent any cash or houses or any earthly things from my parents expect to work for what you want. Some of my friends in school were privileged by having the best of everything. Some of us were less privileged. Some of us grew up in parentless homes, they were even less privileged.
    My contribution is by no compensation but by sharing my experience and knowledge obtained from my privileged background to the less privileged. I respect the ones more privileged than I, and I expect the same.
    History that we as white people were told were covered in biastness, similar to the black education in those days. I think it is important for all to go back to the places were the events took place to understand reasons etc.
    I think that we surely should not continue with this Marxist classification, have and have nots. Based on history, that is an everlasting battle based on someones social classifcation. The ultimate winner of this battle is a dictator like we have in China and here in SA with 'kill the boer, kill the farmer'.... or in the Middle East with 'from the river to the sea'...
    Your history started in 1913 but it actually started much earlier when Bartlomeaus Dias and later Jan van Riebeeck put foot on South Africa in Cape Town.
    The reason for this was that there was no halfway house in Africa, between Europe and India and the Middle East for trade.. Trade is what makes the world go round...not marxism.
    The only inhabitants during those days were Sir Harry die Strandloper. Sir Harry did not have the means or the appetite to join the world.. Van Riebeeck brought a portion of the Cape to establish a trade root.
    Records reveal that Sir Harry sold South Africa for cigarettes and booze. The Khoi was invited to work for van Riebeeck but refused... In fact, not African wanted to work for van Riebeeck and they choose not to compete against him for trade...
    van Riebeeck then imported slaves from India, Malaysia to come and work. Ironically all black slaves, were exported to ARAB and US countries did not come from here.
    When the Brit came to South Africa in 1913, the Afrikaners were boers and not businessmen. The business men were the Brit, Jews and Arabs. Black and white fought shoulder to shoulder against the Brits.
    The Anglo Boer war was lost against the Brits. Apartheid concepts were introduced by the Brits like 'DIE SWART GEVAAR' to make the Boers to start turning against our fellow countrymen.
    It was the Brits that started with coloured people cannot vote..
    My question: Is an Arab from Egypt an African?
    Is a Russian, Jew, Arab or Chinese black or white?
    Let Us build a positive Marxist free South Africa

    • @lyndonjacobs5264
      @lyndonjacobs5264 10 місяців тому

      So you are an Afrikaaner propogandist. You ommit quite a lot, such as the dutch arriving and taking land that the khoi used for grazing, which started to erode their society. Also that Harry die Strandloper came from khoi and san people who already inhabited the land and then revolted against the VOC because he saw what they were doing to his people. Also you dont mention how the pre-afrikaaners expanded and pushed the khoi out of their home because they wanted land for themselves.
      In addition, nothing that the british did excuses what the Afrikaaners did. And to say that Marxism is bad is a just another tactic to stop people from banding together and empower themselves.

    Hi Dan. As a black teenager, I personally don't think BEE is fair. I believe success should be earned on merit, not because I happen to be black. Will you please make a video to explain what BEE is, and what misconceptions I might have made?

    • @lyndonjacobs5264
      @lyndonjacobs5264 10 місяців тому +12

      I think the question is: if black people do not start on equal footing with white people economically, is a merit based society fair?

    • @404Learning
      @404Learning 10 місяців тому

      The first misconception is that BEE equates to the absence of merit, I who graduated in 2003 and others before me found it extremely difficult in finding highly skilled work despite graduating with a tough degree "Computer Science".
      The majority of us were put in call centre jobs rather than getting an opportunity in junior computer programming while our white counterparts with zero experience and qualifications were ring fenced to attain such opportunities.
      It took BEE and AA policies implemented by the Government and started taxing companies who do not comply.
      Basically the jobs we have today that require highly skilled individuals is as a result of the Government forcing the hand of these private companies through heavy taxation.
      Where merit comes in, black people were not just thrown into the positions, many companies who complied introduced curated mentorships and training programs, and then a careful selection of the best performing black individuals got the job.
      Yes there are outliers where none deserving people got the job, it doesn't mean by in large meant the absence of merit.
      The aim for BEE isn't only about tenders that gave it a bad name through gross mismanagement, but to ensure the work environment matches the demographics of the country.

    This was unbiased and so informative. As a coloured male who grew up on the Cape Flats, with a businessman 'white' grandfather whom could not accept my father as his own due to Apartheid laws / mindset (you know sleep with the help, just dont marry the help), i saw this play out first hand. My dad was raised by his "stepfather" as his own on thr Cape Flats, in poverty. Yet, across the highway, his biological white father and half siblings where living in it up in luxury.
    We cant change the past BUT these conversations are important to have. White South Africans (especially the younger generations) dont know their/our history. They kind of live in a bubble and take for granted their privileged lives eg. Having your education paid for by your parents, having a roof over your heads and enough food in the fridge, having your parents give you an extra push by helping with a deposit on your first car or home. Living and working in Sea Point for example because daddy has connections as a company, or damn. Working for your daddy (job security). Hell, no having to pay blacktaxcoz your parents are not dependent on you.
    Hopefully this will reach the right audience. Hopefully white south africans will finally start seeing the problems POC face in this country as and "our" problem instead of a "their" problem eg. Fees must fall vs Zuma must fall. The one movement united all South Africans, the other was a POC issue (they want everything for free).
    Once we start collectively looking at SA problems as "our" problems, we can possibly move towards a free and democratic SA and get the chance in government this country so desperately needs.

      Fellow coloured person who grew up on the Cape flats... It's interesting you bring up your white biological father and the disdain he felt for you. My mom's grandfather was a white man. He was an absolute terror and called his children the H word (you know what that means)...and the irony is that he was totally dependent on his supposedly inferior children or he would have likely died in the gutter. My mom's grandmother, was coloured but she lived as a white woman in a wealthy suburb because she could pass as white. My mom's mom was given the choice of passing but she didn't want to do it because she'd have to turn her back on her family who were a little too dark to pass. The white supremacy regime ruined families. It's always struck me as strange. How race is "interchangeable". It should mean nothing but it is unfortunately still haunting us.

My grandmother was born in the camp. Upon removing my pregnant great- gran with her younger children the farm was razed to the ground. Stock killed ,house burnt down and anything valuable taken. Indigenous people were also taken to concentration camps.
    When the war ended and Britain was victorious, 28000 white people
    had died in the camps. 15000 black people had died.
    Returning to the scorched earth farm my great- grandfather rolled up his sleeves and restored his farm. A priority was to build a school inaugurated in 1908 and to import a Dutch teacher. Today the school still serves the community.

    I don’t know why but the idea that South Africa was invented sounds funny to me. Like they were in a lab brainstorming ideas on how to make the perfect African country.😂

    This is what I expect from all south Africans by now -- understandong the injustices of the past and working together to fix them. unfortunately, some white people see this fixing as discrimination against them.

      It is discrimination doesn't matter how you or Dan would like to argue it away. You have become that which you fought against most. Dan is just doing this for views. Vast majority of things he use today was still build by the rrrr rrrrr rrrrrr. Black Africans had one of the highest living standards in Africa...wonder why?

    • @W.GlobalAffairs
      @W.GlobalAffairs 10 місяців тому +2

      @@dn822 , do you think black Africans had the same high standard as white people? If the answer is No, then you have no point. You cannot tell me that the limits that were imposed on me, were good for me. You cannot tell me that the pain Europeans inflicted on Africa's, was good for them. You have no point there.
      It is good now that black people and white people can be rich or be poor as humans together. We have the same opportunities and we experience the same life in South Africa. That is a good thing to all of us abd every decent human'being

      @@W.GlobalAffairs You had higher living standards then the rest of Africa. Why

    • @W.GlobalAffairs
      @W.GlobalAffairs 10 місяців тому

      @@dn822 , you are talking to the wrong person coz I grew up in poverty. My parents did not have their land in Venda coz they were removed from their land for white people to have land. They did not have anything coz the apartheid government segregated them to barren rural lands and banned them from trading in the national market and the international market. They were given what was called bantu education which excluded the fundamentals of education in order to keep them behind white people.
      Am sorry to bust your imaginary bubbles, but I lived ompoverty because of apartheid. Where I come from, the entire province of Limpopo was living in poverty. But since we freed ourselves from white spartheid, come to Venda and see the houses and businesses we built for ourselves. So, again, you don have a point coz you do not know us abd you do not know where we come from as a people. All you know is that white people lived well during apartheid. You do not know that for white people to live well, my parents had to be dispossessed.
      I am trying to be calm and explain to you in the face of your unbearable ignorance. You actually think you can tell black people who were living in poverty, that they lived well during apartheid. You say we were better to other Africans??? You should let living in our country with that ignorance, you should not even be living Africa coz you have no businesses in this continent in this day and age.

      My only issue is that progress has stagnated, which isn't beneficial for anyone. The standard of living for black people isn't getting any better, and the standard of living for white people is dropping. This just shows how South Africa is actually regressing, and if we don't correct things EVERYONE will be poor..
      I have hope, however. I'm proud to be South African and I truly believe that we can fix things if we stop letting arrogant rich people walk all over us, and stop letting ourselves be convinced to hate each other. It's going to be a gruelling uphill battle though.

    As a black person I also know that inequally was there before apartheid. We were culturally unequal to Europeans way before racial segregation policies. Most of our inequally is mostly because of this. Dan is being intentionally biased and shallow with his narration. secondly the Apartheid South African government was moslty helped by investors and European immigrants to have a significant tax base through companies that came here. Its not the government that made white people rich. White people made that government rich. The only thing I cannot argue is infrastructure service.

    Dan, your comparison of Black Economic Empowerment and White Economic Empowerment lacks context and ignores the intent accompanied by success of each. White people presided over "White Economic Empowerment" which successfully benefited white... but on the other hand, black people (specifically men) preside over BEE and it has not benefited black people.
    BEE only benefits politically connected individuals.
    White liberals like Dan are tiring in their quest of being sweet and loving towards black people. It's condescending at best to the poorest of the poor who are failed by corrupt black male politicians.
    Another order must be pursued.
    Regards,
    I am a young black man
