Poor White South Africans: Living in a Squatter Camp in South Africa Today | A documentary about white people living in poverty in Krugersdorp, South Africa.
South Africa is the most unequal country in the world. But it is rare for one to see white people living in poverty in this country which has the biggest European population in Africa.
In Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg there is a community of Afrikaner white people who are living in a squatter camp with black South Africans.
Among these people is an Afrikaner woman who is doing charity work in the community, her name is Elize Saunders.
She is running a soup kitchen to feed the community.
Saunders provides meals for the elderly and children in the community through a food donor and sponsor.
Having been moved there in 2015, they say they are living in peace with their black neighbours. In this documentary by Dinilohlanga Mekuto of Something Nice with Dinano, they speak about their way of living.
This is their story.

This was a very insightful video
Thanks for watching...
There's no place and time for racism in poverty, only survival.
Now that I think harder about it, money has ruined everything.
What a lot of bollox...Why do you call it White Squatter Camps??? It should be Squatter Camps...
I love how you put it Hillary...poverty is a great unifier, or so it seems
call it what you like, and I call it it how I see it
@@truth-Hurts375 to attract viewers . And it’s very unusual to see poor while people in SA
I like what that man said "I made my bed and I must lie in it" I love people who take accountability for choices they made that put them in such positions. It's from that realization that you're able to work hard to get yourself out n to where u know u deserve to be. God be with them🥺💔
In most cases when you see a white person on the street he made a wrong choice with his finances
@siyabongamlaba8979 not necessarily true. Not all white people grew up rich. Just like not all black people grew up poor.
Gareth is well spoken and seems regretful but unable to get out of the situation that he is in currently
He is well spoken too so rather sad. I made mistakes too but was able to correct them sufficiently to survive well after retirement. So I understand where his coming from irrespective of his "choices".
The whole lot of them need to go back to Europe
I wish I could experience this kind of South Africa before me an my wife decided to leave for the Netherlands. There is so much hate in the country, but there is also love in some communities which you never read about in the news. The media in South Africa will always shine a light on only the negative. These people give me hope.
Thank you for this documentary.
Heartwarming comment. May you and your wife keep well and safe❤️🙏
You can always find what you are looking for, whether love or hate?
@@davidmotlaloe5628 yes David that’s true! We never ever complained about the DA or VFF numbers because we grew up being taught Ubuntu. We aren’t the ones taught to hate. So the ones who want to stay with us the Africans. We welcome them ❤

don't make your decision seem like its based on some great failure of South African society i would hardly call the netherlands progressive given that they still think its ok to wear black face and act like idiots
Without politics to divide humans will unite.
Thanks for the video Boet.
It start it with the white nation.
I wish a majority of people can realize how evil politics are
thanks for watching bro @derius
Spread the knowledge, eventually we'll have a population of people on the same level of thinking.
It was evil politics that caused the Fall of Apartheid 😇😇😇
Bless all these people living in peace together. Its the way it should be!
This RDP Houses issue its really stressful, but atleast they are living in harmony. To God be the Glory, maybe the whole country should learn from them
Yeah, it looks like they are getting along well enough...
How many whites qualify or received RDP houses????
@@maritaharmzen6273 I never knew that they needed housing as they gained a whole lot during apartheid.
Some white South African didn't gain anything during during apartheid. Born poor at the other side of the railway, just suffer as much more than many black people. Discrimination between the rich and the poor. You can add the word "bywoner" with apartheid and squatter camps to your vocabulary. Poor whites working for the rich on farms like slaves.
It’s a pity South Africans think Government owe them RDP houses of which are not a gift but long term zero interest loans,we got the system here in Botswana (SHAA Self help housing agency)it’s available for only the low incomes earners, the interest free loans are payable over 25 years,we don’t seat and expect our Gov to provide instead we hustle to sustain ourselves while in SA RDP is treated like rights as if the gov owe them,I like the way this white and blacks socialize though.
I met the lady at 5:18 when I spent a summer in South Africa and did volunteer work in the squatter camps. She was very sweet! We did a Bible study together and she prayed for me. The children in the community were very sweet. And there were so many dogs running around! We had great fun and enjoyed our time. She and her whole family are very sweet.

Some people will not like this, because it's a positive video showing how great black and white people are living well considerate and kind to each other. When people are poor they humble and are more human and kind. Money ruined everything. Thank you for the video
That's exactly what I thought as I watched this - money is the great divider of people's. No wonder they say it's the route of all evil.

What have you done to improve the country or the people if you say nothing, then you can answer you own question you then are one of the missing links in the rainbow. We need a miracle, right now, so if you not in the business of miracles pls move on swiftly.
@@couragebeforedishonor Pls don't misconstrue what I wrote, I said S.A. was better under Mandela it was not about money, it is about morals and ethics, ask yourself how many wealthy Black people are reinvesting in other Black people and communities, how many prominent black wealthy family's are creating outreaches and involved in upliftment projects, ??? Point is even if you took all the money from whites and gave it to the poor disadvantaged black communities they would not grow or share that wealth, they even steal from there own stokvels, very few can manage group wealth, so go look at the stats on that then come back and share, we have lots of Wealthy black families no names mentioned, who for 20 yrs plus had time and money to start charities and invest in and grow community wealth from grass roots level, it has not happened, all we have is corruption and degradation and a collapsing system. It is always white monopoly capital that nothing is working, because only in the mind of the uninformed will it be right, eh once every single white person has gone into a shack, owns nothing, cannot work, or gives everything back they stole from the black people then it will be right??? Think very carefully about this mind set because you don't have to look to far to see what has happened in Zim , keep thinking like this, see how the country will look in another 20 yrs.
@@couragebeforedishonor Yes you are correct about people waiting for whites to correct and help and lead the way, it is better to seek God and pray and then find your own way, not wait for another who may show you the wrong way, be black be proud of your culture, white culture is no better or worse, money does not fix all your problems it can create bigger problems, Hunger has no colour and no name, Respect and tolerance is not valued today, driving a big smart car, designer clothes, living in a big house, and styling is new new, while masses of rural and Township dwellers suffer and cry that's the legacy this generation will have to face, if this country is to make it, then take colour and race out of the equation it must not be part of the criteria to run a country, put skills and merit in place diversity works only if you let it, you cannot make a cake with just flour and eggs you need water and a good oven and a baker with some experience. Fighting will not resolve the Western Cape break away, compromise and negotiation will have to be engaged we have seen to much blood shed in this country for politics.
If 100% of SA had to live like this, we would have no problems, poverty humbles people and brings them together. Sane struggle, same fight, same place. Great report!

This is the thing in South Africa - we are social-economically displaced. We use money and economic wealth to seperate classes in South Africa. The most unequal society in the world.
Unfortunately can’t fix inequality without communism which makes all people poor in the long run
unfortunately capitalism wont make us all rich...so whats the answer to our economic woes?
@@SomethingNicewithDinano the goal of capitalism isn’t to make everyone rich. It goal it’s make a high standard of living attainable to most by encouraging competition in the production of good & services so they can be cheap in the long run. There will always those who are well off compared to others.
In capitalist system you don’t have to be rich to have a high standard of living look at 50ties United States & Europe a modern cases is Singapore, Hong Kong & Taiwan. Singapore is the most capitalist nation on the planet & they’ve eradicated homelessness now their only goal is make goods & services cheaper.
Yah SA doesn't have a racw problem.. Its more of a class problem
Unfortunately, this is how our Afrikaner families are. Greedy, not helping one another and don’t care about one another. Yes, I can say this because I am an Afrikaner and this is how we are. I’m not proud of this. Do you see Indians, Greeks, Portuguese, etc. in this position? No, it’s not common because these peoples stand with one another and help on another. I sometimes wonder whether it’s our makeup because we are made up of several European nations who not necessarily like each other much even today. Just my take on our Afrikaners.

True that
No matter how we want to look at things, the fact is that we are all created in the image of the Creator and that is what counts! If we focus on that fact then we are all brothers and sisters under the sun and skin colour means nothing in the long run! I was born in Canada to South African immigrants. My father was the head of the 'Drame department' at the University of Toronto and my mother is the welk known writer Margaret Visser. Growing up I was sent to private schools and spent summers at our house in the South of France.
I don't know exactly why I became so troubled however I know that I was deeply affected by the struggle against Apartheid during the 1980s. There were demonstrations in the streets demanding the release of Nelson Mandela and the end of the Apartheid regime. I felt ashamed of my identity and kept my Afrikaans roots secret.
It was in the early 90s that I entered 'The SASIC center' (The South African support and information centre) in downtown Toronto. I was warmly welcomed by the director Maisela Kekane and told to come by more often, that they had live music on Friday and Saturday nights.
When I came by I was introduced to the regulars and even though I was born in Canada and identify as a Canadian, my hand was warmly shaken and I was referred to as 'my South African brother'. There were a lot of talented musicians in that crowd, some of them well known professionals, I was taught how to dance the Soweto Jive!
Often I would hang out at Steve Molefe's house with Welcome Nkosi, 'Easy' and others. We would smoke Dagga and talk. Sometimes, especially when I asked, they told me what it was like to live under Apartheid laws and the struggle. (Steve Molefe and Welcome Nkosi had been part of 'The class of 76) and 'Easy' had been in prison on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela. I remember one time expressing shame about my Afrikaner roots and Welcome Nkosi saying that there is more to Afrikaner culture than oppression. Despite having been imprisoned on many occasions by the Apartheid regime, he still had good things to say about Afrikaners. 'Easy' would look me in the eyes with a big smile on his face and say 'I only want to be your friend'. And so the years went by and my drinking got steadily worse.
I became homeless, Steve Molefe put me up on his humble apartment and his wife cookie food. Then the city of Toronto gave me a room in a house for people who have addiction. I felt very stigmatized, there was a lot of violence and the police would often come. The neighbors built walls around the house and wrote a petition to the city to have us removed. I did get money from my parents, whi gad moved to France, it went on alcohol gambling and women.
I lost track of my South African friends and other Toronto friends and took a bus out to Albert's. I had a tough time in Calgary, I couldn't hold down a job, sometimes I got thrown out of homeless shelters for coming back drunk. At one time I worked in a steel plant 'Standens' the foreman there was from Zimbabwe, one time I told him that my parents were from South Africa and we became instant friends. I was working for a temp agency and got a check every day. Jacob Nkube would insist on driving me to his bank machine every time I got a check and cashing it for me so I would get the full amount. ( western union would take 20%.)
I moved to Victoria and married a lady from the Philippines who is hard headed. I opened my own business and have had some success, I amno longer ashamed of my Afrikaner roots and am proud of my South African roots .
I do what I can to give back. I learned that the best way to help yourself is to help others.
I sponsor an orphaned child at 'The Coega Door of Hope'.

My people are some of the most welcoming and loving group of people i know but unfortunately because racism is so embedded in MAJORITY of white South Africans (and coloured and Indian communities) psyche, most of them judge us first based on our skin colour and not our character. I wish the rest of the country was this united, but it's just wishful thinking I guess.
Do you have proof that the majority of whites are racists? I don't think so. How many white people do you personally know?
It's also deeply embedded in black people - an academic survey just completed found black people were much, much more racist than europeans. South Africa is fast becoming known as one of the most xenophobic countries in the world with attacks on other Africans increasing and even political parties forming around this sentiment. You applied an observation to a majority of people of a certain race whilst completely ignoring it in your own. That is problematic because if one cannot see the issue clearly and instead projects it onto other people then one cannot fix it!
@@frankyyaggabot6222 this is probably the funniest thing I've read in a while. Thanks for the laugh!
If you want something even funnier - look up slavery in Ethiopia between different African peoples (went on for thousands of years and only ended in 1943 only a year after they were liberated and had their country handed back to them by ... white South Africans who were the first into Addis Ababa). Then, if that's got you bent over with laughter the Bantu Expansion is an exemplar case study of genocide in Africa followed up by the more recent genocidal migrations of Nguni Peoples south.
The welcoming and loving Kamba people of East Africa sold their own tribespeople into slavery for beads in the 19th Century. Yes, everybody manages welcoming and loving when words are all they are trading. @@Tahj-Leigh
To accept, to love and support one another and make the kindness and compassion grow in relationsips is why we came here... to Earth. To be Blessed with joy and prosperity for others depend on them who care and want to see the next person being well. There is only but ONE race it is the human race. Colour of skin is not the colour of ones Inner light. MAY THE LOVE IN OUR HEARTS SHINE ABOVE ALL THINGS. This is how we survive and win toremain here as we partner with the Earth. Let no man or woman be allowed to force devide and conqure theories to seperate humans. Thank you for this video. Have fun.
This is a bitter-sweet story... so sad that there is poverty everywhere while the governments live like fat-cats... There is absolutely NO reason for this. Our world is abundant - there is more than enough to go around. I have to say that I believe there is coming a time -VERY SOON - when this situation will change - NESARA/GESARA - God help us all to bring in the golden age! Have faith - it is closer than we realise~
I've actually read the book titled Animal farm from when I was in grade 12 In 2009.
It's Deja Vu that's all I can say. About the Anc in SA and the Pigs in the book. Me being the donkey that sees everything but takes no action
ITS NOT POSITIVE AT ALL
WE ARE POOR ALL OVER THE WORL, NOW U SHOW US A FEW POOR WHITE PEOPLE THEN WE R SUPPOSED TO FEEL FOR EM? COME ON GUYS.... MOST OF US ARE IN WHITE CITIES, AND THER IS NOTHING WHERE WE COME FROM,,, WE R NOT DEVELOPING WHERE WE CAME FROM, COZ THERE IS NOTHING.... WE HAVE TO GO TO THOSE WHO STOLE THE LAND TO TRY AND FEED OUR FAMILIES....THEY ARE NOT FACING RACISM THEY CREATED,,, WE ARE FACING IT ALL THE TIME.... IN FACT,,, COOPORATIONS ARE MADE FROM STOLEN LAND, MIONEY AND ALL THAT....THEY DONT HAVE LAND IN AFRICA, SOOO THEM BEING POOR SHOULD BE A THING, BUT BLACK PEOPLE IN THEIR OWN COUNTRIES AND REGIONS ARE POOR, BECAUSE OF WHITE PEOPLE WHO ARE FULL OF SHIT. @persche4119 You don't dejavu when a brother I beaten. with life.. This can happen to anyone..
It’s nice to help people problem it’s when they get money start smoking heavy stuff and drinking all that money while it’s no food ,maybe specially those who are drinking it’s better to get food package and small cash rather than drinking all that money cos it’s just a draw back, those who are still welcome to their families help them to go back cos even when stay now it’s not even clean no hygiene at all it’s just too messy what happens when they get sick I think it’s so much to look about people who stay in this situation,if those promises for them having RDP houses it’s met yet it’s better they build for them cottages like one bedroom with en-suite for the couple got no children others two bedrooms depending how big is that family, just keep environment clear from all kind of sickness it’s just too much,I pray someone must stand for this situation & thanks for sharing this 🇿🇦🇬🇧
Multi racial society
Actually diversified
Excellent documentary thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it. Be on the look out for more coming this year
They should join EFF
There's nothing which EFF can do for people, EFf is a business for Julius and his friends.
People don't always realize that south Africa's racism is hugely a class thing.
True! That's why I say, Equality first, Unity later. When people face the same struggle, it is easy to unite in an effort to overcome that struggle or challenge.
I am in the state of life you are mate it is hard but we never give up.Yes it's shit to collect scrap ,but as they say a penny makes a rand.hold on you shall win.👍💯
It shows you that sometimes blood isn't thicker than water & people don't understand that they can be in that same situation because life has a funny way of showing you that it's not always moonlight & roses. God bless you guys. Thank you for the unity that you bring.
As some have said...poverty, the great equaliser.
The original saying says "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb". In the olden days people used to make blood covenants, hence the saying. Now we don't do that anymore but it still holds true that bonds you form along the way in life are usually stronger than those you have with your brothers/sisters. People are usually killed by family members. Your blood relatives will kill your if they have to 😅
Stand up and take back what is yours. Be like them
BEAUTIFUL VIDEO!
TELL ONLY THE TRUTH!
Thank You.
Poverty is the great equaliser !!!
We are one, love
I like seeing this side of South Africa
"When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace." Jimi Hendrix.
