    To the people commenting on what Sarah said about depression:
    I think she was referring more to dealing with the blues and not the medical condition.

    • @enielfblerta428
      @enielfblerta428 3 роки тому +1

      @@j4nn4h4sh well, the "other meaning" refers mostly to things that aren't human. And when you're referring to humans, the term "depression" is widely understood as the illness. So when you don't want people to think you're talking about clinical depression, just say "when you're feeling down".
      I don't want to jump at her or anything, her only mistake was to use the wrong word. Other than that she was right. But I've heard too many tips from healthy non-professionals about how to get out of depression, and they're all so useless that they're borderline offensive. That's why I had to add my two cents.

    I love the darkness comments. People need to realize that when you are sad and depressed, you have to be vigilant of what your medias are. What you are listening to and viewing can really pull you down. 2015 was the worst year of my life and I realize now, I was feeding it. I listen back to playlists and they were all sad and I was working at a very depressing place as well. Just all around bad. I love your channel and your positivity.

    You're right when you're saying that it's important to try and concentrate on the positive things but also as someone who struggles with depression and anxiety since early teen years - hearing that it's valid, it's not your fault and other people experience similar things is really really important. We have to talk about it, it shouldn't be a tabu. People need to feel they're not alone with their struggles! Hearing someone who says that it's okay to feel like that actually has a healing power - this is what makes you start work on yourself. Until then, if you have depression, you tend to feel like everything's your fault, that it's your fault that you feel that way and that will just make it worse...

    Hi Sarah,
    I found your channel a little over a year ago when I felt my life was in shambles. My grandmother who raised me fell I'll Novemeber of 2018 and this up coming Feburary it will be a year without her. I rededicated my life to the Lord when she fell I'll and found my soberity with an addiction I fought for years. And after she passed I began to live minimalist in all aspects of my life. From my house, to my relationships, my diet and to my life goals. It really helped me prioritize things and see what was important. I returned to school and graduated, I married the love of my life, I took a dream job as a barista, got baptized and this August found out my husband and I are expecting our first child next April!! 😌 I can still remember when the days were too much to handle and even when I was grieving how much I loved your videos. And I still do. You're videos really do mean a lot to me and bring me joy. I appreciate you and your family so much. So I just wanted to thank you! I always pray for you and your family ❤ I want nothing but the best and as many blessings for you and your family in 2020!!

When you changed from beauty to minimalism I was super skeptical but now my mind has been totally changed, I am making changes in my lifestyle and these changes are making me so much happier everyday and i never would have looked into minimalism or being intentional with my lifestyle if it hadnt been for you. I watched you as a beauty guru and I would have never watched ur new videos if I hadnt really enjoyed ur old ones. Thank you so much for helping me change my life

    Since you haven’t dealt with depression yourself it might be best not to really touch on the subject much since you don’t know much about it. It is incredibly beneficial to know we are not alone in the way we feel when we are depressed. Being around others and talking with others who know what your going through and understand you....it’s so so incredibly important.

    • @rusaka4009
      @rusaka4009 4 роки тому +23

      I agree with you in the part about need for understanding. I definitely think it's crucial to know your not alone in what you're going through. However, I also agree with Sarah, but I think she meant something a bit different than you. What I got from that is people (not just depressed ones, people in general) need more positivity in their lives. They need to look for good sides of life, and it doesn't mean they should look away from this world's any problems, but they shouldn't let themselves be so easily overwhelmed by them. If everybody feel bad about some situation (and all of us sometimes do), and instead of looking for a solution and looking forward to a better future they just blindly believe that it's okay and to feel so bad and are sometimes even encouraged to feel that way, it's just a clear path for a clinical depression in not so long time horizon. I know that, I was there. And I know that if some good people in my life didn't help me see better things in life instead of dwelling on those horrible feelings i'd be the same wreckage of a person I once was.

      Christina Anaya I think it’s also remember to important that when you’re down low it’s really hard to seek that out. Just saying we need to stop normalizing it (which is what I heard her say, I’m paraphrasing) doesn’t help.

    • @b10aa
      @b10aa 4 роки тому +14

      Totally agree. Thankfully I've never had an actual depression, but I am very prone to depressed moods and anxiety unfortunately. Hearing about other people who deal with this helps me feel not alone and gives me tools to deal with it. Only focusing on the positive as Sarah says in the video unfortunately does not always help. Listening to happy music when I'm feeling sad for example can make me feel even worse. That being said: @christina Anaya thank you for expressing your opinion respectfully and not makin the commentsection a fighting pit about everything we disagree on with Sarah.

    • @GodgivenAUTHORITY
      @GodgivenAUTHORITY 4 роки тому +24

      Coming from someone who has gone through and came out on the other side of depression--I don't think you should surround yourself solely with others who are also depressed. Sure, it's comforting to know that you are not alone in what you are feeling/experiencing, but it's also so very important that you have people around you who are speaking LIFE into your situation. Depression is not a state that is meant to be lived in forever. It's so hard to try and live with a brain that feels like it's fighting against you--but you have to take a look at what you're feeding into yourself. For me certain music, TV shows/movies, social media, certain people were feeding into my depression and only worsening the problem. I feel our society has normalized depression without helping people get to the root of what is causing it.

    • @katskrucha2861
      @katskrucha2861 4 роки тому +6

      Again, I’ll agree with Sarah, it’s like having cancer and agreeing and accepting to have a cancer... you would do that would you? When your brain fails to keep you afloat and tells you to give up you need to work hard to get to a better place, not to sit accepting it. It’s like when you put too much on weight and you’re not happy, do something about it don’t learn to accept your new size .... that’s what this compares to. I didn’t have depression but my best friend has a clinical depression and she’s not letting it take over and dictate her life, she’s training her brain with me and friends to feel better

My Dad just turned 81, my Mom just turned 80 and they both have good strong minds and health but I don't know how much longer I will have them. Also my oldest sister just turned 59 last month with my other siblings all being in their 50's not that thats old but I want to appreciate them now while I have them here on earth. Thanks for the encouragement Sarah! I'm making a 2020 goals list as we speak! Now that it is the new start of a decade I would like to make a list of goals/improvements every year and pack it with my Christmas decor to read and evaluate the next year! I've come up with a lot more than I thought I could, some that really hit my feelings too. I remember my dad wanting us to do this when we were younger and I would think "how dumb!" But now being many years later and married starting my own life, I get it. I feel so bad for ever thinking that way. Your goals change and you often forget what you want to improve on, so its nice to have the list and to remember the person you've grown from. Sometimes we aren't the person we were from a year ago.

    I 2nd your habit of going to bed and waking up early. I got a dog in May of last year, and he wakes up naturally between 7 and 7:30, which was way earlier than I was alone. We both adjusted to wake up around 7:15 together and get out for a morning walk. We go to bed when the sun goes down, which changes through the year. I feel so accomplished and energized, and I really enjoy that my body’s natural clock is timed to the daylight cycle. It feels so good to go to bed early and get enough sleep.

    Thank you Sarah, for deciding to share your wisdom :) you reminded me what life is really all about, in good times and bad times.
    I am reminded to stay positive and calm and trust in my abilities, as well as in my partner's. To help lift people's spirits and my own, instead of focusing on all that is going imperfectly. To decide to keep my faith that things will work out even though it's hard ❤
    And most importantly, you reminded me that no one is perfect, even myself, and that that's okay. I have the ability to right the wrongs in my life as best I can, and to forgive those I love who have done something wrong. Because at the end of the day nothing really that horrible has happened and I still have a lot to be grateful for :)

    I love that you talked about health and what you went through in 2019. I also struggled with intense hormonal acne and pain with my back and just feeling so awful. I started going to a chiropractor in August and taking organic whole food supplements at his direction. So far I'm feeling so much better, my hormones are being balanced, and I'm seeing the root of why I was feeling that way: stress and anxiety. All by the grace of the Lord, I am learning to trust and let go. It's really crazy how everything is connected with our bodies. That's how we were made.

      Totally agree. It's the epitome of telling a depressed person to just snap out of it - it's dismissive and invalidating. Clinical depression doesn't work that way. Perhaps she didn't mean it that way, but regardless I do agree with other commenters on here that if she's never struggled with the issue nor practices/studies it then she should not speak on it so ignorantly. I feel like she's just discussing sadness, and doesn't actually understand the distinction between sadness and depression. 🤦‍♀️

    You had me until you started to tell people that if they are depressed that they should just pretty much stop being depressed. Depression is not a choice. You have obviously never had to personally deal with depression or anxiety. I am talking about REAL, deep, depression. Not just oh..it’s a bad week I am feeling down depression. Also what you say about having debt and just choosing to work on that debt really comes from a place of great privilege. You had some good points and suggestions but your bad ones, your naive ones, really detracted from your good message.

      Rewatch that segment where she mentions depression and sadness. What I received from that is that she knows it’s a real thing and she feels for anyone going through it, but try not to stay in that place. Surround yourself with positivity and know that you CAN overcome it. Keep your heads up!

    • @christinarae-ann9412
      @christinarae-ann9412 4 роки тому +33

      Shawnee Summerson the thing is that it’s not as easy as “not staying in that place”. I know she is coming from a good place but she doesn’t fully understand and saying to someone with depression to “focus on the good” or “don’t stay in that place”, that really hurts rather than helps. Also, talking with others who feel the same way and understand what your going through is very beneficial which she suggested isn’t a good idea so I think she just shouldn’t talk about certain things she doesn’t understand.

    • @planningtolive_thebestlife453
      @planningtolive_thebestlife453 4 роки тому +27

      Saying “don’t stay in that place” implies it’s the persons fault for still being there. It implies they have the power to change and they just aren’t doing it. I know that personally when I’m there it’s most often for no reason at all and I crushed that it’s happened again. There’s nothing I did to put myself there, and there’s nothing I can do to take myself out of there. I agree that those comments aren’t helpful in a real sense.

    • @keepingupwiththejoneses746
      @keepingupwiththejoneses746 4 роки тому +35

      I could be very wrong here, because I am NOT Sarah. But, it felt more like she was saying don't feel so stuck in a rut because it is so common. Don't get to a point where all you do is surround yourself with others that are down and negative (different than talking to people about your feelings and being relatable and validated). And telling us to focus on the good, is not wrong or naive. It is greatly beneficial. It may not be what drives one out of depression, but it is a great reminder, when in the thick of it, things can be brighter and better ahead. I don't think she believes that anyone purposefully becomes or stays depressed. It seems more like she is worried that if too many people "normalize" (really poor choice of words.. maybe more like "promote depression as an identifier"), it will lead to people drowning in the depression far longer than if they were able to remind themselves that it IS possible to come out on the other side. Rather than JUST finding a group of people that know how you feel and can make you feel less alone, find the thing that really breaks through that depression. Beit, medication, therapy, support groups, vacation, quitting a job, etc. Just don't get caught up in depressing surroundings.

A real book can never be replaced. This world is so full of everyone thinking of only themselves, we need to start thinking about others again/more. And when I was depressed and anxious I was on this group for people with anxiety, and reading those things every day made me spiral down that path SO much more. I had to delete the group and find my way out of the depression and anxiety and it was so much easier without watching videos or reading about it constantly!!!!!!

    For someone who had faced trauma that leads to depression and anxiety, it is extremely isolating, and it is comforting to find others who have similar experiences. You feel a disconnect from “normal” people, and surrounding yourself with positivity actually has the opposite effect and leads to feelings of more loneliness and separation. However, I like some of the other tips and still found this a neat video!
