Johnny’s first introduction to the vibrant Sydney band scene was in late 1979 when he brought his NZ pub band Johnny and the Hookers to Australia, lured by the promises of a local booking agent who then proceeded to exploit the band mercilessly. The band might not have been paid for gigs but they did learn valuable roadie-ing skills, built some muscles and were thrown in to the quintessentially Aussie beer-barn scene, supporting acts such as Dragon, Mental As Anything, Mondo Rock and The Hitmen.
When The Hookers crumbled amid the temptations of 1980’s Kings Cross, Johnny formed various bands with compatriot Phil Hall, most notably The Spivs who Chris Bailey invited to open for the reformed Saints on their controversial comeback tour. The promoters balked, but Spivs did get to open at the chaotic and rowdy first show of the tour at Sydney’s notorious Civic Hotel.
When Phil Hall left to join Ian Rilen’s new band Sardine V, Johnny formed Dropbears with Chris Cross (Toms) and Simon Rudlin. Dropbears' first single, Fun Loving, became a favourite on 2JJ, establishing the new band at the heart of the Sydney indie scene.
After certain ructions, Chris walked off the stage mid-gig, never to return. Phil Hall stepped into the line-up (he had been operating lights for Dropbears on the night, so it wasn’t a huge step). Dropbears second single Lay Him Down again gained favour at 2JJ but also served to bring Dropbears to a mainstream audience via high rotation on 2MMM.
Signing to a major soon followed with WEA picking up the band and INXS’s manager, Chris Murphy, becoming involved. The resulting mini-album and a string of singles brought widespread recognition and a host of international support spots with bands such as The Cure, New Order, Simple Minds and U2.

What drama. Interesting guitar pattern to focus on from the start, dealt out smoothly with light percussion as if laying out a fresh deck of cards. Plenty to interest and to hold back the nausea that the bare feet of others in one's face can usually inspire. And, yes, what a bedroom drama. The sleep-yearning dame is likely hearing this as the stadium song it could readily be, with thousands singing along, in deep nostalgia for a time when this was just their song, and said it all.
