They recorded this, Paperback Writer, and the 14 songs of Revolver, including Tomorrow Never Knows, Yellow Submarine, Eleanor Rigby, Taxman, etc, in a couple of months. Then they had the rest of the year to tour the world, write and record Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, When I'm Sixty-Four, and most likely write a good part of Sgt. Pepper....All in 1966. I mean, by today's standards, what they achieved is a miracle.

@@michaelsix9684 the amount of music they put out was insane but that's what used to make the money back then. In the 60s album and single sales were the main money makers. Touring was good money too but back then the beatles were able to become a studio band in 66 because album sales could actually do something for the artist back then. These days with streaming artists have to tour in order to make money which kinda sucks but it's just what technology does to the world. At this point vinyls and CDs are essentially novelty items now

I produced an entertainment news show for several years and got to meet quite a number of musical artists. I never got to meet Mike Pachelli, who is, of course, a recording artist in his own right, and I certainly wish I had. Is there a more talented, affable and generous guy anywhere? Would have loved to meet him....

An older musical pal of mine told me that when this song came out in the spring/summer of 1966 "it floored everyone," meaning all the radio-listening kids in his Queens NY high school. No one had ever heard anything like it before in pop music, not even remotely. (Little did they know what was just around the corner.)

  • @lotharroberts5978

'Rain' was really the first Beatles tune where Paul's newly acquired Rickenbacker bass was prominent in the song, (And really any pop tune for that matter.) That and 'Paperback Writer'. I always thought his Honer bass never cut through the mix at all. (Man, I sure wouldn't mind living in the south of France. I loved my short time there all those years ago.) Brilliant job as usual.

This is one of my favourite Beatles songs and I actually had no idea that they tuned to A for the original recording so that was cool to learn, still has one of the coolest bass lines from Paul as well and I know I've been asking for these a lot but I'd love to see a video on Hey Bulldog, If I Fell and some Anthology cuts like Free As A Bird, Real Love or If You've Got Trouble. Really, really well done. It explains why playing standard tuned chords didn't sound anything like what they did and were wholly unsatisfying to play on what is for me probably a top 10 Beatles song. You really brought your A-game on this one. (Well, like always, but I thought this took it up a notch!)

The mind boggles at that much talent and inspiration. Two double-A sided singles, the four songs all-time stone classics, released practically back-to-back, bookended by Revolver on one side and Pepper on the other. I've marveled at it since I was a kid and it's still utterly insane. Most bands are lucky to get ONE good song.

The new Revolver 2022 remix Deluxe Set has a track of John's guitar, Ringo's drums, and Paul's bass as recorded "speeded up" (disk 2, Rain (take 5/actual speed)). This track was then slowed down, as explained by Mike, and John's vocal added. Also, Paul overdubbed his bass at the slower speed, so that only John's guitar and Ringo's drumming survived from the original "faster" track. Absolutely amazing to me how they were able to use recording tricks to create that unique sound!

What makes this song is Paul's bass. He's winding it around John and George, while in step with Ringo (who is playing more complex fills than normal) while also keeping his own melody going.
Not many bassists are as strong in the context of song structure as Paul Mccartney.

Thanks Mike, All your instructional videos are great and vey much appreciated. I found a tuning that I use when playing this song that I think hits all the notes, especially the arpeggio section that starts just before the backwards vocal at the end. I tune to G D G G B D
The G's are all an octave apart with the low G tuned down below a standard low E. I use a .070 string for that G. Check it out and see if it makes sense. Thanks again.
