      Congrats on getting your acceptance letter. I hope that someday you do get to be a 'bright spot' but nursing has really changed over the years and nursing is not quite the romantic job it once was when a nurses greatest purpose was to be there to hold a hand. Now nursing has become a highly technical and skilled position with nurses having less and less time, sadly, to just be a comfort. More and more that position falls to nursing assistance and other auxiliary staff. Even in the last 10 years things have changed a great deal. At one time I could leave my daughter alone in the hospital for a while and knew that she would have the care and attention from the nurse assigned to her and not be lonely. Now, 10 years later, its not the case. Of course she is older and need less adult supervision but when she is in the hospital, except in ICU, the nurse only appears if she needs meds, and IV changed out or an emergency occurs. Otherwise the nurse is very busy giving the skilled care - like IV's, meds, treatments etc to several patients and does not have time to do real bedside care. That attention comes from the assistants and others. I don't know if that is a bad thing - they certainly should be using their training and skills to do what needs to be done but the job of being the "comfort" giver has changed. for example, my daughter is about to go home and no longer has IV's running and is getting very few medications right now, we saw the nurse on the day shift exactly 3 times today for less then 3 minutes each time. She came in in the morning at shift change for the night nurse to introduce her, came in at noon to gives some meds and check her IV site and flush it and then was back at 3PM to introduce the afternoon nurse that was coming on. No real comfort given. Of course my daughter got plenty of attention from the nursing assistant that helped her bath and changed her bed and took her for a walk and did some activities with her - that was where the bright spot came from for the say. My sister actually left her career as a nurse several years ago because she no longer enjoyed it because of the limited patient contact she had time to provide and felt very torn when told that sitting with a patient was not her job. I can see that a hospital can see paying a high salary just to have someone sit with a patient is losing money for them - the nurse is paid to do the higher skilled job, but I also understand that the changes in the career have made it so that she just did not feel like she was "nursing" anymore. I am sure you will be an excellent nurse but just know that most likely you will be busy and involved in the technical and skilled areas of medical/surgical care and not doing a lot of hand holding.

    • @mcg267
      @mcg267 7 років тому +10

      Pam Duncan I know what I'm getting into. My mom has been a nurse for 30 years and it is my passion and my dream. I will do whatever I have to do for my job and my patients needs. I never assumed I would be sitting at their bed holding their hand, but I don't have to hold their hand to provide excellent quality care.

    I don't know if it's because of Mary's CF, but wow, the care she's getting is amazing! My step dad had surgery to remove a tumour on his kidney and only spent a couple days in the hospital. After my surgery the nurses wanted me to go home before I was even fully awake/functional! It's nice they're letting her stay as long as she needs.

    • @felicityaeh
      @felicityaeh 7 років тому +2

      Carlen Boersema I think it depends on the hospital and the drs/nurses, and how much room/beds they have. Sorry to hear your experiences haven't been great.

    • @WholeFoodSpark
      @WholeFoodSpark 7 років тому +1

      By the time I was semi-awake (and had been given pain meds), most of the staff had gone home. The nurse that was left was pretty chill. I asked if I could sleep for 20 more mins and she said ok. Before my surgery I wanted to stay the night but on the day of I was more than happy to go home. The first few nights are rough, though... hopefully I'll only need 1 or 2 more surgeries in my lifetime... or none!

I have to say you have the most upbeat spirit and the ability to see the positive in some very difficult situations. Even adding humor to getting an iron infusion, that was so hilarious. Well, it would kill you, so I'm guessing it doesn't feel great.

      Eliza Ashley - it wouldn't kill you, why would you think that and plus at least she's not actually injecting Dr. Pepper into her veins

      It's super acidic, too, so yeah, it would definitely be fatal. People thinking you can just put whatever into the veins...it's problematic, and you can't. Small bubbles aren't actual as fatal as people think. Yeah, you can end up with an air embolism, but it has to be a decent amount of air. Really, the main issues would be acid.
      Good thing it was a prank, and it looks like they've got na few people in the comments :)
