Puhekieli Practice | Translating Finnish UMK Lyrics! 🎶 | Can I Understand Estonian?! #7

- Опубліковано 30 тра 2024
- This is the first video out of two where I translate the Finnish lyrics for this year's UMK (Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu) song entries. Which song is your favorite this year? Let me know in the comments!
In this video I will:
● Translate the lyrics to Mikael Gabriel & nublu's song entry 'Vox Populi'
● Review a TON of puhekieli that is found in the lyrics
● Get an idea how similar Estonian is to Finnish and can a Finn understand any of it?!
🎶 Vox Populi Music Video: • Mikael Gabriel x nublu...

Terve! Minä olen Diego. Olen kotoisin Hondurasista. Asun Suomessa, Oulussa. Mä haluaisin ehdottaa:
Could you please consider to make a video about "going to a barbershop and how to ask for a haircut?😅". This could suit maybe easier for you if you try it the way you usually do it with some of your friends's help. Cause i understand if you'd say that you couldn't know exactly how ask for a heaircut in a barbershop cause where you go yo keep your beautiful hair is a beauty salon.
But well, i also want yo thank you for all your videos, they have been really really helpful to learn finnish quicker than i've expected.
Do you have any specific phrases? That could already help!
Moi, Kat! I just discovered your channel recently and currently trying to learn Finnish by myself(in Finland for over a year now). Love your content and I am learning a lot so far!
I have a question though, in the "Mua huolestutta..." phrase, why is "mua" used instead of "mä" (plus mä form of the verb)?
Thank you for all the great videos(that I still need to go through) ! Hehe.
Nice video, thank you!
In Estonian, Ü is equivalent to Finnish Y, and Õ is the unrounded O, or the back counterpart of E. (Except that Estonian has lost vowel harmony, so the front-back opposition doesn't matter anymore.)
I have a suggestion for a future video: maybe you can play Wordle in Finnish (sanuli fi) and give us some tips as a native speaker?
Kiitos and thanks for the tips about Estonian pronunciation! I had no idea Estonian doesn't have vowel harmony anymore :o
Plus that's a very interesting video idea actually! Though fun fact, I've heard Finns telling me that they think sanuli is more difficult than wordle even for them xD
moi moi I just discovered your channel and you have 310 videos. I will watch them all one by one and take notes. Thank you on behalf of everyone for your efforts
Wow!? Do I really have that many videos already :o
yep :)@@KatChatsFinnish
I'm not a native speaker of Estonian or Finnish, but I tried translating Nublu's lyrics for fun.
I noticed that I had some differences with my translation for Nublu's lyrics:
sõprusringkond - circle of friends
naabrimutt - female neighbor - Perhaps there is no Finnish equivalent for this
silmarõõm - eye candy (someone or something which is pleasant to look at)
-I am not sure why the official lyrics say sweetheart. I would say kullake for that
rätik - handkerchief (I assume that Nublu means taskurätt, as in handerkerchief, since he is clearly talking about a bull and matador)
Of course as Kat said, the lyrics were translated in spirit. Fun video to watch, by the way, and I am interested to see your take on the other UMK songs.
Correction: I found out that naabrimutt is like ämmä.
Learning Finnish by lyrics is my favourite. Though I understand a sizeable number of words, I'm facing difficulty in forming sentences, can you make more videos explaining to do it including categories such as a question, expression, daily conversation etc. Kiitos!
Sure! I have a few playlists that could already help you a bit:

- Finnish question words: ua-cam.com/play/PLRT3b6lFfYD-MfaJBCtGLmFK6i1QMlrgn.html&feature=shared
I'll keep adding to the theme though! :)
Moi. I started watching Eurovision when I first visited my Finnish cousins. I watched the UMK videos last year, putting on the subtitles and trying to understand. I have to say I didn't like Kaarija ( Finnish keyboard is on my phone not computer). I like Portion Boys best. Taking Finnish through a tutor by phone.( Before Covid it was a class). However, the instruction has become too Kirjakieli and touristi. Kiitos for your videos which are so helpful. I am considering Italki in the future.
Yeah I don't think I paid too much attention to him at the start either and didn't have a strong favorite. But hearing the song so many times it really grew on my a lot and I thought he was quite funny in his interviews as well xD Thanks for sharing your Finnish journey and good luck continuing it! :)
Kiitos Катя .)))
Kiitos!
I was trying to understand the connection between "kansan ääni" and, for example, "mun kanssa". Then I noticed that 'kansa' and 'kanssa' are totally different words because of one S. Kiitos tästä videosta!
True sometimes it’s a very small detail that changes the whole word 😅
Nice thanks. I used your link and watched their video. I like it. I even interpreted a few words in the Estoninen part....brothel, cartel....Thanks for the video, kiitos
Oh that's great! Fun that you were able to understand some of the Estonian as well! :D
I was predicting that cyan kicks would win until I watched this video, but I didn't expect the lyrics to be so meaningful, I guess I changed my mind :D Also, as an outsider listening to Estonian, I don't see any difference
Never know! I have no idea who is actually the most popular right now so I guess it'll be exciting to see! Käärijä last year came as a bit of a surprise for Finnish people actually. And interesting to know - I can imagine how similar it sounds so might not hear a difference :D
Well she did say it with a strong Finnish accent! But a pretty easy way to tell apart spoken Estonian from Finnish is that in Finnish you shouldn't hear words ending in consonants other than n,t,s,l and very rarely r. In Estonian words can end on basically any consonant.
@@KatChatsFinnish I still can't believe how Käärijä didn't win, even in the hall where the competition was held there was a lot of support for him
@@19vodka03 Yesss I remember that D:
I have a question! How do you say "Get" in Finnish?
"saada" = to get / to receive
@@KatChatsFinnish Thanks! Kiitos!
@@KatChatsFinnish How much difficult to learn in Finnish for a Hungarian person?
@@kristofiszaly4588 I guess it's always challenging but maybe the grammar is more similar to Hungarian?
@@KatChatsFinnish thanks for replying. ☺️
5:22 Did I miss something or did you skip a line? 🤔
You’re right! I must have edited that part out accidentally oops!!
6:03 helvettin does my comment is being removed too? Me too don't know
1:10 Me: who already watched each videos lol
Isn't Estonian version of umk called something else?
10:15 i remember i watch some Estonian song i thought they were Finnish one
10:40 Estonian: Drunk finnish
Finnish: sober Estonian
13:47 next time add hungarian song in ending although i know you already recorded the next video but yeah
Finnish = sober Estonian xD
What about doing this one by Pariisin Kevät, Kat? ua-cam.com/video/IUjqTuw1Jlo/v-deo.html
Moi kaikki! 😬💙
Moiiii :D Kiitos kuvasta!
Over time, do you think that you've become more Finnish looking, rather than American looking, Kat?
Hmm not sure? Do I look more Finnish now compared to my earlier videos? I feel like I haven't changed too much in regards of style/mannerisms but it's hard to always see it yourself.
I guess you absorb the culture without knowing it. Living in Finland, you're more likely to buy Finnish clothes and cosmetics, so that's probably why. Would you ever go back to the USA permanently? @@KatChatsFinnish
@@nigelwatson2750 Well I only lived there as a toddler and I've only been on holiday visiting family there since then. So actually I feel like my home is in Finland and Europe more than the USA. But if a good opportunity came at some point I wouldn't rule it out completely - but it would have to be a good reason I guess.
Moi!
