  • Foxes do seen to find themselves in some very odd places, but entanglements in netting is definitely something we see far too much of!
    Luckily for this particular fox, he was spotted by a member of the public and Lawrie, our Operations Officer and out-of-hours rescuer, set off to set him free!

    Leaving nets down like that doesn't just risk entangling critters, it also massively reduces the useful lifespan of them. One of the things we always did at our football club was after training and matches to either pull the nets up high or remove them entirely. This makes mowing the grass much easier, and keeps the net dry and far less muddy. Real win-win for everyone, including foxes and birds.

      In the US everybody seems to use portable nets and just keep them in the garage when not being used.

    • @ShadeSlayer1911
      @ShadeSlayer1911 Рік тому +7

      Forget mud and moisture. We got Lawrie here cutting them up to free a fox, so that definitely reduces their lifespan. Even if no one was there to cut up the net, I don't imagine a trapped and possibly dead fox is great for the useful lifespan of a net either.

      @@LadyIarConnacht this net isn’t in someone’s back yard, it looks like it’s on a piece of common ground. Many local authorities provide them for kids and adults to practice with and they’re a permanent structure (or they wouldn’t be around for very long). It’s up to the users to toss the bottom of the net up over the bar when they have finished playing. Taking a ball to the common was something we all looked forward to when I was a kid, but there wasn’t any money for football (soccer) nets in the early 1950s. We played perfectly happily with piles of coats as goal posts, which was much less dangerous for foxes and other such creatures.

    Wonderful work there Lawrie! That momentary expression of utter shock as the Fox couldn't believe you'd just set them free before bolting off to freedom was GLORIOUS!

    All these nets should be sold with warnings. Maybe we should find a way to contact manufacturers

    • @Fuchsschwester
      @Fuchsschwester Рік тому

      Very nasty thought here: The manufacturers want to sell more nets. So, if WAF cuts them apart to free animals, it raises the profit.
      As much as I love the Idea of a warning, I don't think it will happen.

    Why are those who use football nets so absolutely stupid as to leave nets down .?If you had a pound for every time WAF gave this net warning you'd be richer .Yet seemingly words fall on deaf & daft ears .Even those who don't watch can see what a threat such things are .Guess they are indifferent ..Great work and please may the lovely fox survive any other encounters with public apathy which is way too much ...👍💚🦊How many other areas where there are no rescue services kill wildlife by utter negligence .The thought makes me shudder ,

      Kids. They use the public recreation grounds with goalposts/net for 'scratch' kickarounds/football games after school/during holidays.
      They aren't aware that animals can get tangled up in the nets.
      Out reach programmes at the schools (particularly primary/junior) could really help with this.

    The fact that he still came to help is just awesome.
    A few years ago i needed Help with a freezing, sick cat outside, no one wanted to help and i had a cat myself and was scared as i had an incident not long ago with another stray(they came from a neighbour who brought them, but never cared and even abused them, where no one would do anything against. Who was, sorry, FINALY hospilazied because of old age) who did goe absolute rampage in my appartment, causing damage i had to pay in installment because my insurance said that was my problem.
    So i thought i call some numbers i found online, from the animal shelter and animal rescue organisations. NO ONE wanted to help because it was the weekend. They said, when she was out their till now, she can be out their a few day's longer.
    This was just so devestating for me. No one wanted to help and i was just so scared xx. I took her in my bathroom, because at this time i had a tiny 1 room-appartment and my Cat in the Living-room. Thank goodness she was just super loud, meowing out of fear or pain, idk xx. I tried searched trough the internet and did write in a few foren for Cat's till someone answerd me. She just came home from a vacation and said she would take her, as she was a Foster for cats. Although for kittens, not adult cats but she said that was okay. She would care until she can give her to the shelter. She also brought her to the Vet and all.
    At this time i fought with really bad depression and anxiety disorder, had no job and just lived in this tiny appartment with my cat, which was also a stray who adopted me more,. than i adopted her xD. And i had in only one year, 3 cases with abused cat from this neighbour. And people just don't wanted to help, because "the cat's have an owner". It was such an traumatizing situation, esspcially the last one where i was really scared she would die when i do nothing.
    Sorry for this long story ^^'''. I just wanted to say how much i appreciate youre doing. And how it helps me, to never look away even for the smallest of animals.
