  • Volvo and Estate cars go together like Ikea and flat pack furniture, and the new V90 model is probably one of the best cars Volvo have produced in a number of years. The V90 is based on the Swedish car manufacturers large executive saloon, the S90, and while it's actually a slightly shorter than the saloon, it still has a massive boot as well as five seats. Engine choices are a couple of 2.0-litre diesels, a 2.0-litre petrol variant or a powerful a hybrid with over 400BHP.
The V90's executive car roots mean it’s priced well against premium models like the Audi A6 Avant , the BMW 5 Series Touring and the Mercedes E-Class Estate. Buyers in this bracket aren’t just looking for space, they also want a comfortable ride, a sharp drive, strong engines and generous levels of luxury and equipment.
Volvo has used its appropriately named Power Pulse technology on the V90's D5 engine. This uses compressed air to help the turbocharger kick in faster, and the result is superb acceleration from low revs helped by standard all wheel drive.
Ride comfort is crucial in family estates, and this is another area in which the V90 really does impress, especially if you ticked the box for the optional adaptive dampers that includes air suspension at the rear, as this helps the V90 glide along motorways and over rougher roads at town speeds in a composed fashion.
Volvo is synonymous with safety and it has taken this to a new level with the V90, upgrading its standard emergency city braking system to recognise large animals, as well as pedestrians, cyclists and, of course, cars. Standard, too, is a system aptly named Autopilot, that will automatically keep you in your lane on the motorway, control your distance from the cars ahead and maintain your speed fully autonomously. Euro NCAP hasn’t tested the V90, but the S90 saloon is one of the safest cars in its class, performing especially well in the safety assist category, unsurprisingly.

I have a V90 Cross Country and with regards to the map in the dials display, I found this in Settings. In there on mine you can turn it on or off. Basically driving a computer on wheels. I love mine and just feel so comfortable and safe in it.

I have this but the D4, the car is perfect except for the small auxiliary battery system the car uses, it doesn't hold charge very well. If you don't use the car for a day or two the auto stop/start basically doesn't work and the function of the app will not operate. You have to drive the car very frequently to keep the this small battery topped up. Rather annoying.
However, in terms of the nav. You can sue the app to search for the location which works exactly like google maps and send it to your car. I find this so much quicker and easier, the navigation also then utilises the HUD and map screens to direct you.

The more I see if this car the more I like it! I have a company Mondeo with 131k on it and may jump to cash for car. Want an XC90 but can’t justify the jump and this would make the perfect stepping stone! Would have to be a D4 or D5 version though 12 to 18 month old with Xenium and Winter Packs! They just look so classy! You can pick up a low mileage as good as new one for £25k which I think is great value seeing as a brand new focus this days is not much cheaper!

Great comment Thankyou and agree the XC90 would be a great car just a bit too expensive

Regarding the satnav, you need to use capital letters for the postcode and it is easy peasy!

Yo Mr AJ I always enjoy your reviews as I learn a lot from you, I'm glad you mentioned how much you will reply to our comment as I'm gonna change my car anytime soon and I would like your advise.
I have a Nissan Qashqai which I so like and admire almost everything about it from shape down to it's smooth transition in gear and the way it floats when you corner it's a brilliant car though there are even more brilliant ones out there, my issue is I need to know which of these crossover or even a SUV I can rely on where satnav is concerned and a reasonable price too.
I'm referring to the fact that I can't see anything on that satnav's screen on a sunny day as the way it sits is like it's actually waiting for a sunbath. In other words the sun sits right on the screen no matter what and then the screen looks like midnight ( it's like nightmare on elm street) and my dash keeps reflecting in my windscreen aswell makes me do miserable when I should be enjoying the sunny day drive.
My plan was to get me a Xtrail or a Hyundai Tucson and the sporty SE Nav I think looks really hot with those grills and Rims, I'm a family man and I like to have that windscreen one touch demist.

Great video AJ, I drive a V90 r design, D4, more than enough power, and I average 40 mpg. I agree the diamond cut alloys look great but so easy to kerb , no protection from the tyre sidewalls.

You dont have to have the map in the centre of drivers cluster panel on my V90 R design. You can have Radio/Contacts etc.... I also get just over 44mpg combined - Agree, GREAT car, was my company car and ended up buying it at the end of my contract. Good review.

I just had the misfortune to have to travel in the rear centre seat of this car.
It is as bad as it looks!
Another expensive big car that's really only a 4 seater.
