@Devin Velasco Lol finally someone recognizes our hard work as well. David Luiz makes BRILLIANT recoveries every game and despite this, he is HATED by Arsenal fans day in and day out because of few mistakes. Heck, some people think De Gea doesn't make as many mistakes as him. Defenders are often the reason goalies don't concede, and without them, the opposition would be scoring dozens of goals easily, so why do they get blamed after they make one mistake? They prevented like 20 goals and you're going to blame them for conceding one?
NYT doesn't know a thing about the profession. They asked a goalie that doesn't even know the modern game to do this. It was true in the past goalies often didn't get the praise they needed, but these days it's the defence.
Personally as a winger i know my job is not that difficult compared to what you goalies have to do in every single game. It's true that we have to move and run more but goalies they literally sacrifice their hole body ! and we even sometimes might make alot of mistakes and not pay attention throughout the game and nothing happens but as a goalie it's completely a different story you need to always be careful and the danger is always there and in any moment by a small mistake of defenders the unthinkable could happen and you get blamed instead. It's a very stressful, difficult and important position and i think you goalies deserve more attention 👏👑⭐
Former high school goalie here. The things talked about were especially true when my team played a league game before the COVID-19 pandemic hit us. In one game, I got scored on 4 times because my team never supported me whenever I yelled for them. They all thought that I would save every single incoming shot. Never played again because the coaches never trusted me, even though I wasn't properly trained like another goalie in the team. Not to mention, I was constantly harassed because of my sexuality, and my girlfriend wasn't spared. Both of us were attacked with verbal racist "jokes." Even some were made by the team captain. The coach overheard one of them and responded with the phrase "Boys will be boys." All of this happened at the beginning and throughout the season before I finally decided to quit and join the track & field team, who were a major upgrade in terms of friendliness and performance.
Hey, it’s been two years since my last high school game but I understand what your talking about. My defence used to doubt my abilities too, because of one goal that I’d conceded (it was a long range shot which should’ve been saved but again that’s where I messed up). I didn’t even get selected for the next tournament. I kept practising and playing with some of my good friends on the team and eventually I got called back on but still wasn’t first choice. I did get to play a few games in the next tournament, I did well and our team won the trophy too but it didn’t feel like a victory to me. Even a single incident can change your mindset and motivation another example would be the Karius situation where he bottled two very easy goals in the UCL final against madrid and Liverpool didn’t even keep him in the squad for the next season (loaned him to Besiktas, he’s returned now though). Coming back to me I did manage to win a lot of games and in the end it was a great experience but that one incident really changed my mind and made me doubt myself.
I was a goalie in soccer as well. I worked my butt of every day but my nerves occasionally got the best of me in a tense situation. Some days I wouldn't play as well as normal and my teammates laughed at me and called me names. I think people don't understand how hard it is and how much pressure you feel when you are the last man. When you are literally throwing your body at a ball that is traveling at speeds that can give you a concussion. I remember some days my hips would hurt so bad from the dives I did the day before that I would miss a save in order to protect my bruises and my coaches would say I was being lazy. In the end I genuinely did have fun. That is why I played it. There's something satisfying about completing such a hard challenge and showing up for your team when the pressure is on. I just think if I received more support from coaches and players I would've had the opportunity to use my skills a little more because then I wouldn't have always been so nervous. I think the lesson is: Make sure you show some appreciation to your goalies. Give them a few extra compliments every now and then and let them know they have your support.
The goalie is just the final defense. The stuff that happens before it reaches the goalie matters. Only it's so much stuff that it's easier just to blame the goalie.
Not true, I went to a match a few months ago and we had a goal that with an average goalie you could save should've been saved but all the blame went to the MIDFIELDER's, which like, I mean, that was way before they scored giveaway.
What makes up for this dreadful feeling of being under appreciated because you let in a goal at the end of a game after making great saves throughout the game is when your team is, say, winning 3-2 and you make a magnificent save in the 90th minute to secure the victory for your team. This happened to me and me whole team celebrated me and hyped me up so much and it was one of the greatest feelings ever. Idk moments like these just makes it amazing. On the other hand I feel like strikers get this feeling so much more than goalies do, so it is kind of unfair for us, but as someone who really loves the position, I don’t care.
I remember the Champions League quarter final match between Atalanta and PSG. Neymar was dribbling fantastically but had very poor finishing. Even missed sitters. PSG were trailing 1-0 at 88' but came back to win 2-1. After the match everyone was celebrating how brilliant Neymar was that match. Edit: I am not criticising Neymar. Just pointing out that fans witch hunt goalkeepers if they make just one mistake.
not because of the finishing though - he was, pretty much, the whole PSG's offence that night - created a lot, not just assisted inone of the goals. on the subject of the video though - noone was blaming the keepers for the goals, by the way ahah
Well to be fair, he was absolutely brilliant. Except for his finishing that game (which everybody was calling him out on) he was unstoppable, Atalanta couldn't do anything to him
I no longer play goalie anymore but when I used to, I honestly dreaded the position most of the time. The immense feeling I would get making some saves kept me in the role but it was real hard since no matter how many saves you make, it was as if I was only remembered for my mistakes.
True indeed... goalies are only remembered and penalised for their mistakes, whereas strikers are remembered and rewarded for their merits: I admit that a striker's job requires loads of skill and competency, but that is no reason for this bias against GKs to exist...
@@manswind3417 there is no bias. The goalkeeper position has changed in the modern times. Look at how Neuer plays. He plays further in the pitch and has redefined the sweeper keeper role. That requires massive confidence. Most of the time, if your goalkeeper has to make plenty of saves, it just means your defenders aren't doing their jobs.
Iker Casillas has a famous quote that goes something like "being a goalkeeper is like being a good person, no matter how good you play, people only remember your mistakes"
Great video and animation. As a goalkeeper myself I really relate to the loneliness of the position. You really need different kind of resilience courage and forgetfulness to play it and play it well. Sadly I just didn't have it. I was really good in training but I couldn't control my nerves on matchday.
Even the most experienced goalkeepers can feel nervous, this is so TRUE! Like, I play just for recreation (stood in goal for more than 2 decades) and I admit that the size of the net makes me feel nervous! However, that feeling goes away when I start warming up. I won't save every shot and I cannot expect to win every game for my team (well not every time), but I know that I can produce a few head turning, applause worthy MOMENTS OF MAGIC and that's what MATTERS the MOST. Thanks for the upload 😃😃
This is an amazing short video. One other thing that adds to all of this anxiety is that the only other person in your team that can relate to you (the replacement goalkeeper) is effectively your biggest competitor and threat. That always creates an interesting dynamic.
As a player who was mainly focused on defense, I would get the chance to speak with the goalie a little bit more than others during games, everytime the ball would get close to the net I’d try my best to defend/kick it away from the net in dangerous situations/ or if all else fails then put the goalie in the best position with the best odds to stop the ball. If it ever did go in I’d always go and talk to him because I know the pressure that’s put on the shoulders of the goalie.
I was the goalie, my younger brother was the striker. This video sums it up beautifully - I could watch his misses and mistakes all game long - and knew mine would mean a goal down. He was always the star - when he scored! My saves were expected and I was villain for any that went in. Still - loved being the goalie!
Alright, I'm a goalkeeper myself and most of my 'career' was spent on teams that sucked for the league I was in growing up, all the way until I finished out near the end of highschool where I got to compete on a much higher level in club. But, as much as I can sympathize with this in the sense that everything rests on your shoulders and you could easily get nervous, honestly though I couldn't disagree with the premise of the video more. There were times especially early on when I would get obliterated in goal simply because there wasn't anything I could do, let alone compensate for my team. But that insane 'pressure' where everything falls on you is the best part of the whole experience. You're the goalie, and when all else fails you don't; YOU lift the entire team up and are the pillar of everyones morale at the end of the game. Because, even if shot after shot get taken at you and even 1 or a few go in, all it takes is the beautiful moment after a ludicrous save NOBODY should've been able to get and everyone crowds into you after to be completely hooked. Goalie is the best position on the field and I wouldn't trade it for any other, let alone the feeling of elation having everything riding on you being able to go ball's out every time the opposing team is approaching
Honestly as a keeper, the mental strength always has to be greater than the physical strength. Looking at goalies like De Gea, they always find a way of blocking out their mistakes and coming back stronger. It's amazing how they push those thought out of their heads
When in the youth I always played central defender and it was a same like feeling as one single mistake can change your game. Knowing they didn't always like me for it I knew I was backed by the five behind me helped a great deal.. The bonding of this came with the highest trust and resulted in good friendships outside the field, which already last a long time.
