I drove across it 2 times. Both times there was not much traffic. The first time was at night. I was kind of scary. The second time my gas light came on just after getting on the bridge. I envisioned myself running out of gas at the bottom of one of the tunnels. Fortunately I was able to make it all the way. Make sure you have enough gas before you get on this bridge.
haha. If I have a beach house their, Idk if it's better having it like 1-2 hours away from the bridge because I'd love to get their in 20mins or so and just drive on it for fun! Idk or umm is being more tucked away for a quieter beach house a better spot!? Or can you find a quiet beach house near the bridge hmmm... Ocean Front I'm talking about here!
I drove across this bridge when i was a teenager in the early 2000's during a crazy storm, i just knew my life was over, it was a relief to make it across.
If the winds are too strong, they close the bridge. They don't leave the bridge open if the weather is imminent. It's mainly based on wind strength and snow/ice when it comes to the weather. I know because I lived and grew up on the Eastern Shore, I'm a Shore girl. Been across that bridge hundreds of times! Miss it so much because now I live in Central Virginia near the mountains.
It’s been since the late 80s or very early 90s that I’ve been through this. During my Navy days I’d cross it going from Chesapeake to Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. Once when we were on the island with the gift shop a submarine surfaced, crossed over a tunnel, then submerged again. It was a cool thing to see. This brought back some memories, thanks for posting.
Back in the golden olden days of '72 & '73 I was stationed in Norfolk VA aboard USS John F Kennedy (CVA 67) many a Friday I'd take a bus from Norfolk to New York to see my mom. I don't know how many times I crossed the bay bridge tunnel...many, many times. Oh so long ago..
Went across back in the 80's on a 1980 lowrider with the love of my life ,on our way to Daytona for bike week, words can't explain the rush , thanks T- Bird
One of my fondest memories of living in Virginia was living right on Ocean View Boulevard. I would sit on the beach and drink Steel Reserve 40s and watch the cars drive over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel right here at night. I watched their headlights as they drive over the water and just casually descend into the water and then come back out and then repeat. Just as awesome is seeing aircraft carriers and other giant military / commercial ships navigate across. When driving into the tunnel it almost looks like you're going to run right into the side of these massive ships. The same thing coming on the downtown Norfolk on your way over to Newport News. Hampton Roads is rather interesting part of the inner Beltway.
I'm late to finding this but a huge thank you!!! My dad recently passed and we used to drive this with the old station wagon and later the truck...so wonderful to see this!💕
I've been on this bridge once when I traveled to Virginia Beach from upstate New York. One of the scariest bridge/tunnels I've been on. But also very cool. Its almost like the ocean is level with the bridge at times and you're floating on the ocean 🙋♂️
Just came back from a Funeral in Chesapeake Va. First time ever going over and under it was 2 oclock in afternoon and I loved it! Marvel of engineering.
I have been across this bridge once in a empty tractor trailer. Lucky the wind was really light. Maybe a breeze that wasn’t even noticed. What freaked me out was the tunnel’s had water on the walls. A few years later I heard about a truck getting blown off the bridge into the water. I have not been on the bridge since.
Picture it. 1957. My dad, (who wasn't afraid of anything), opted to take us on the ferry across Chesapeake Bay rather than navigate this bridge & tunnel. I never knew what the fuss was about. Very cool video!!!
Coolest bridge I’ve ever been on. We came down the Delmarva last summer and crossed that bridge on our way to Myrtle Beach and it saved us a lot of time instead of dealing with the bad traffic on I-95 in Baltimore and DC
Before the tunnel, there was a ferry between Ocean View and the very quiet Eastern Shore. The farmers had produce stands that were not staffed except for the times immediately following the ferry landings. So the farmers would go about their business until the clock showed it was time to head down to the stand on 13 for the short burst of vehicles. The exact time would depend on exactly how far your stand was from the ferry dock. Still very rural compared to almost everywhere within hundreds of miles
When I was a kid my family always drove from The Bronx New York to Ahoskie North Carolina Every Year. I really enjoyed crossing this bridge. The view was great.
I live 20 minutes from this bridge in the Hampton roads area and it's funny you say Ahoskie it's a small mostly unknown city in NC my father in law lived there until recently when he moved to Elizabeth City\Edenton.
I had read about the chesapeak Bay and then later the tunnel growing up, it was very nice last week oct . 14th 2022 we finally made it. very impressive, especially when the timing of a freightor ship passing directly over at the same time , we were all the way from Olympia, washington state
Yesterday, the tire on my van completely blew out (undrivable) just before entering the second tunnel at minute 2:25 in this video-literally 100 ft from the entrance of the tunnel. Apparently, God still wants me alive because I'm not sure what would have happened in the tunnel. You cant see it from this video but giant tractor-trailers come straight at you with only a few inches to spare from their lane to yours. They have about 1inch before the roof of the truck hits the top of the tunnel. They rarely do the speed limit and ride your ass the entire way. It's scary as hell.
I remember the first time I went across this bridge, it was late at night and I couldn't see the water. But on the return trip it was daylight and I was shocked at how much water there was and I could see the Navy ships out there. And to me it seemed like the bridge wasn't that high up. Scared the crap 💩 outta me. That was before they added the extra lanes for each side. Now it's no problem. Love it.
Last time I rode on this tunnel was in 1976 the same year my grandma died in Florida. I loved it as a kid and want to go back. I was with my father and he was working in the summertimes in Delaware. I also miss going to Dover, Delaware.
I first went over it in 2012 going to ocean city and I was mesmerized on the way there. On the way back, it was raining and unfortunate for me, my turn to drive. I was absolutely terrified. I've never had a panic attack but it felt like one was coming on. Its so narrow and it sways, then the water is still mesmerizing and the highway hypnosis....its just way too much. I couldn't imagine doing that as an everyday commute.
I can't drive through the tunnel anymore. I get panic attacks. However, just call a head and they will have an employee drive your car over the bridge for you.
You need to just stop driving. If you can't handle a tunnel, there is no way in hell you can handle someone merging into you or even a simple traffic obstacle. It's people like you that slam on their brakes in tunnels and cause 20-mile backups. FUCK YOU.

Great vid, thx. Wife feared the cbbt, went over, back later, she liked it. If you have gephyrophobia, it's long, get used to shorter bridges, avoid bad storms, maybe count deep breaths? 2 lanes and wide shoulder, you're not near low railing Ever notice when busy roads go from 2 to one lane, cars stop to merge? Seems as fast and cheaper to be 2 lanes with shoulder whole way than current bottleneck. How many tiles in the tunnel? Can you imagine putting all those on the ceiling, and both walls? I rode on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel many times during my first 2 years in the Navy aboard my first ship in Norfolk, VA. Going North on Friday afternoon to New Castle,Delaware either on a Greyhound bus the serviceman’s Express and going back to Norfolk,Virginia on Sunday nights, or I would carpool each way. Many Navy, Marine Corps & Coast Guard that are & we’re stationed in the Hampton Roads Metropolitian area were weekend commuters, commuting home on Friday afternoons and commuting back to Norfolk on Sunday nights or on Monday nights if it was Memorial Day, Labor Day,Discovery Day, New Year’s Day night if it was Monday. The ride across I liked it, this was from 10/20/1972 to 7/31/1974. I was originally going to ride across it on 9/22/1972, but it was closed due to damage caused by a Navy LST Class ship that was homeported at the Little Creek Amphibious Naval Base in Virginia Beach there. The Trailways bus I rode to Norfolk left New Castle,Delaware 45 minutes late and arrived in Norfolk,Virginia 90 minutes late.
I haven't been on the Bridge Tunnel for years, but I live near the Bay Bridge, and I think the bridge is way scarier. It's so high, and the westbound span has these railings that don't look like they'd stop my car from going over the side. At least the Bridge Tunnel is low (I'm afraid of heights and bridges). The regular bay bridge doesn’t really bother me but this one really does. It would be nice if both of them were only bridges without the tunnels at all. 😅😅😅
Why are the bridge sections split double lane roads and the tunnel sections single lane combined? Why not have a broader tunnel that can support double lanes for both directions?

JZ AKA GundampilotX Oh jrsus christ don't say that. I'm thinking about how bad the tunnel must be.
Y'all got the dredge equipment on standby right? #florence
As a md. native been across many times
This is how we'd get to the Outer Banks every summer. I knew when we got here we didn't have much farther to go, and it was almost vacation time.
OMG, MAGNIFICENT!
What about crossing it in windy conditions, especially if a vehicle is top heavy??
The Virginia DOT posts restrictions on their website and by Virginia 511 when conditions are hazardous.
Also, they’ll put speed restrictions on the bridge and/or close it if it becomes a danger to traffic.
When I drove this bridge/tunnel my thought was, "They could have made the tunnels a bit narrower so you'd be closer to the oncoming traffic..."
Does it actually shake your car? And how long does it take to drive across?
Gave me anxiety just watching this video😮😢
It has been about 5 years since I used this, but I will be this weekend....Do you all know the current toll?
$16 now I think. Depends on if it’s “on-peak” or “off-peak”
It’s $78.14 now.
I like this song but i don't know the name of the winter or the name of the song? 🤔
I remember going thru this years ago as a truck driver and I fussed out my bossman when I got to the of the bridge 😂😂😂
Why are the bridge sections split double lane roads and the tunnel sections single lane combined? Why not have a broader tunnel that can support double lanes for both directions?
What name of song in video please
In which direction is the car with the camera traveling?
I loved the music more than the bridge.
Is there a place to stop and take pictures on the bridge or right before tunnel entrance?
What is the real drive time to cross the entire bridge? Also if you know approx how long in the tunnels. May need to go this route but very anxious
I would say 16 to 20 mins
Is the tunnel submerged under water??
What is the name of the song guys, I love it
