- In first episode of Beete Din, historian Ruchika Sharma takes us through the vast history of Mughal empire in India and how it has been deeply engraved in the Indian culture. This amidst the reports of NCERT wiping out chapters on Mughals from history books for CBSE students.
Ruchika Sharma is historian of medieval Indian History. She is a doctoral candidate of history at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. Previously she has finished her MPhil and Masters in medieval Indian history from the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She currently teaches at the Delhi University. She has also written for media platforms like The Scroll, The Quint, Newslaundry and The Wire.

Removing one chapter on Mughals from 'Grade 12' textbook does not amount to making Mughals disappear from India
Any one in India, who wishes to study Mughals can do so in any detail, can get a PhD in Mughal history and is free to go to Afghanistan to study and offer Fatia on Babar's Grave
But this so called 'history teacher' starts with a false premise and then goes around building a Delhi centric tale.

Every era do bring cultural changes. If Mughals ruled for 300 years then cultural changes is obvious. Same is true when British ruled India or Spain Rules in Latin America. The changes are obvious. No big deal.
Question is if Mughals or British had NOT invaded India what would have happened?
Well in that case India still would have “Sanatan Sanskriti” because India Still had beautiful architectures that you can see in various temples.
Women would have worn Saris instead of Salwar suite and language would have been more Hindi than Urdu and films would have been Hindi films or regional language films that we already have. Besides, there would not have any religion conversions.
BTW - Mughal culture only influenced Hindi heartland but it did little changes in West or East or South India.
This historian want us to believe Mughals only brought culture and indian were tribals and had no culture of their own and that is not true.
Indian have all rights to learn about Mughals and atrocities that was inflicted on native Indians during their regime like imposing Taxes, destroying temples and conversion . Why historians have hidden the truth of atrocities by Mughals but always told stories of British atrocities like Jallian Wala Bagh tragedy ?
Looks like this historian wants us to believe that Mughals made Indian culturally and morally sound else Bharat was a terrible society?
This historian is probably the history teacher of a primary school. Explanations given by her are shallow and oversimplified. And Indian history is not Mughal history, we need to add other historic events in the school textbooks as well.

I am an antique lover.
I almost visited most of the museums in India.
I came to the conclusion that all the Arts. Literature. Poetry. Paintings. Architecture. Armoury comes from the Muslims rule. Without Muslims India would have only naked status and temples.

👎Full Mughal history of 300 years has not vanished from NCERT books. Only 1 chapter that made students memorize their administration units & ranks. Stop this campaign of spreading lies & fear. Bharat would have been much better off if we could fully repulse the invaders from Arab, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan for a 1000 years. Where learning a language, food or dress style is concerned, we could always learn from a neighbour. One does not need to be subservient to invaders for cultural exchange. And one does not need eye-shadow to discuss history. Tell me why our history books should not provide space to Lalitaditya, Bappa Rawal, Suhel Dev, Martand Verma, Lasith Barphukan at the cost of omitting Mughal administration?

I admire the way she posed the question as if Mughal history is being completely erased from Indian textbooks . And after creating the straw man she is destroying with the logic how important their contributions were in Indian culture. It is ridiculous, because Indian culture was enriched by different dynasties that ruled different parts of India at different times , not alone by Mughals. Historians of her ilk gave such awe inspiring adulations to the Mughals to give them more space in textbooks at the expense of many other dynasties who also made contributions to Indian culture as mere footnotes. Nobody is erasing Mughal history, but it is high time that 250 years of Mughal history be put in the context of 5000 years of history spanning the whole of India and sized accordingly. I agree with her views about the importance of Mughal rule in Indian history, but cannot overlook with rosy eyed views the misdeeds, cruelty and religious bigotry of some of them. No whataboutery or contextualization can undermine them.

@@Karim-so9jc We cannot wish away our long history of communalism by whitewashing history including a blood drenched partition. At the same time we cannot lose sight of the long history of tolerance which even today allows a country of 135 crores with mind blowing diversity to progress economically. History should be taught so that citizens can look at their past with perspectives learning from mistakes and building on achievements. Unfortunately picking and choosing historical facts to build a left liberal political narrative did not redress past grievances that should have been honestly acknowledged and reconciled for a closure. In the name of course correction if we now choose to teach history to serve a rival political narrative it will also not help. So far I haven’t seen anybody altered Indian constitution. So it is reasonable to believe that any change in curriculum will not change fundamentals of teaching Indian history.

Madarchod dilshad, the only reason Mughal stopped sati pratha is because Muslims wanted to use Indian women as sex slaves for breeding purposes.
