Being older I have witnessed women in AW position with no recourse but to give in to what society dictates. In the last 40 years there have been many positive changes. But these practices are still around today. GJ points out so many struggles with women, class. and ideals of the 19th century. AL reaction to society affirms that we are not oddities, but pioneers of the future. Can"t get enough of GJ💙💚❤💜💛
It's such a powerful episode. Anne is such a boss. And you will cry more, likely, but it'll happen. Just keep on watching these badass women. Ann is in a harder spot in a way, there's the Mr Creepy dude who forced himself on her--who I would have *at least* horse-whipped for doing that to her--and her tribe who has no idea what he's really like, and she can't exactly go to them or much of anyone but Anne with the truth. She's surrounded by meddlers. And then there's... spoilers. Whereas Anne's more immediate family that you see seems much more ready to accept her, even with their squabbling. Thanks for the uploads, even if it can be tricky at times. Just glad you're getting to enjoy this amazing series.
I love your reactions! This was a really hard and painful episode. You could see Ann being torn apart internally and Anne getting emotional whiplash. I was outed as a teenager in the 80's and I was put through hell, so I could relate to what both characters were going through. Everyone hid their relationships in public and even with family. We had to say we were "roommates" and play pronoun games. Things have changed dramatically since then. Congrats to you and your wife!
Seeing you cry made me tear up again, even though I’ve seen the entire series a few times now! I love the speech that Anne makes that starts with her saying it’s not illegal between two women! My new favorite T-shirt: 🔳 Single 🔳 Taken ✅ Mentally dating Anne Lister
Elizabeth White TEEPUBLIC has a bunch of cool Anne Lister T-shirts, $20 each. Just google them and use their search bar to look for Anne Lister! (They don’t come up if you search for Gentleman Jack.) The one I mentioned is my favorite, but I have to admit I bought four of them!
Elizabeth White Also found the T-shirt on redbubble website. I am attempting to clip the link: www.redbubble.com/people/vikingelf/works/39404461-mentally-dating-anne-lister?body_color=black&p=t-shirt&print_location=front&size=medium&style=mens&.pla+notset&country_code=US&gclid=CjwKCAjw6vvoBRBtEiwAZq-T1f8Jj-GAU3nPjd7YhXYj5JNlhXNVaI_0GtW3LZINKyBgcxg5FNlzNhoCjLEQAvD_BwE
Elizabeth White I’m so glad you were able to find T-shirts that you like! (I also saw there was a “Mentally dating Anne Walker” T-shirt - - made me wonder what we could find out about the lesbian population if we could survey everyone and asked which of the two T-shirts best describe you!)
That table scene with Anne and Ann was so great for Suranne Jones, it's all kinds of awards worthy. Don't think that episode is eligible since it aired after the deadline for Emmy consideration, but hopefully for next year. I'd submit that scene if I were her...but it will be eligible for a Golden Globe and an others. Hope the show and Jones get a nom for the Emmy this year. Noms will be out July 16, so fingers crossed. Glad someone is doing these reactions, it's fun to watch through others eyes.
Yeah i feel the same way. Me and my partner have been "together" for 10 years but we cannot get married because it's not legal from where we're from. Not together most of the time since i live and work in Singapore (16 yrs now) and she's in the Philippines. In 3 mos, my work will bring me to Germany so by then we'll be continents away. If we're legally married I can declare her as my spouse and maybe bring her with me to Germany (if she really wanted to, she's a lawyer and teacher in the Phils). But still, i really wanted to call her my wife also in a legal sense, so we can both be each other's heirs.
I personally actually marry my girlfriend, but it was just me and her and God. We still waiting to have our paperwork straightened out so I can ask her and make sure that we can do things the right way and legal. She is currently far from me trying to get her part the right way, but is so fuck$& hard. And I think you being away from Rachel has you in all the feelings, that is what is happening to me, everything just hits me so easily.
I know you didn’t do videos to react, but I’m wondering what you thought of Gentleman Jack once you had seen all eight episodes? I especially wonder given all you say here about being married and the supreme court decision, what did you think of the end of episode 8?
Poor Ann--to have used up so much of your native strength at such an early age, trying to endure what children should not endure, especially alone. She ended up not knowing even how to be happy! Poor Anne--to have been born in an age when she had to fight full throttle to be herself, and for that reason to feel the loneliness more than most. 02:10 Marian I love you, but this guy is a jeerrrrrkkkkkk. 03:19 Anne Lister would geld with guy with one look. 03:39 What a difference living in a different age does make. 05:18 Anne Lister is protesting too much, methinks. But actions speak much louder than words. Her actions speak volumes, even more than her diaries. 07:16 I choked up as well. A lot. But that was hardly the first (or last) time.
I wish Anne would of been there for the conversation with db Abbott. He was such a jackass and talking all kinds of garbage. Anne would have given him a serious tongue lashing for his comments. Really hated that Marian let him carry on like that and aided in his stupid words herself! But those were the times I guess. Oh boy, Anne being there for that though would of been good! 😬
In a few years Marian inherited an estate and went to live there. She died in the 1880s, unmarried but very wealthy. Shibden Hall eventually went to a distant relative.
Congrats to your kittycat that its' parents are married!!! Fab!....& whaaaaat? youtube blocked you??!!...damn! I'm gonna miss you for Season 2 :( I just found you today 'cause I'm binge-watching everything I can of GJ till the next season is out! Blessings to you! www.inzalaco-lesbianart.com
"These feelings haven't waivered or deviated since childhood" I've watched this a million times, but that line still gets me emotional

This was such an intense episode. It definitely starts spiraling from this point on.

Goddamit poor Ann, everything she had to go through breaks my heart, just to be herself she's not hurting no-one, she's so strong, society sucks

UA-cam kept blocking her reactions. :(
@@DavidMacDowellBlue that's unfortunate ugh :( youtube is such a boomer
I also feel sorry Anne sister Marian also wants love but convention says she needs to marry for financial support
