On the other hand, Anne wooing Ann we're like "hmm I don't know about that, she's straight etc" Yes it is a game to her, but no different than a man flirting with women and having fun. Knowing the full Anne--Ann story, and seeing Ann light up when Lister is mentioned in her presence, made me see Anne's flirtation/game as fun and light-hearted.
The maid and the footman have different concerns. the maid is pregnant and no husband, in a time when this was so outlandish and utterly frowned upon. the Footman fancies the maid yes but he sees an opportunity to have a relationship by asking her to marry him thus making her respectable in the eyes of society. Its a win-win for them. Anne Listers discrete flirtations are as of greater concern to her as she too would be ostracised if her predilections were public knowledge in that time. she has to be discrete but is also desperately in search of a loving relationship. She has had one but her partner was not as strong as her and opted to marry a man! Anne was heartbroken and mad as hell! she
