    I went camping last wk at a St campground. They built a good size box and insulated it with foam board. The sign said someone did a study on what folks put into the dumpsters at campgrounds. It said 2/3's is food scraps. They are encouraging the campers to toss their food scraps and coffee grounds into the worm composter. Cool idea

    Nice set up and system.
    Been using indoor bins for 3+ years now and love it. Don't get as much liquid because I also put in shredded newspapers and cardboard egg cartons. Keeps the worms in the bin by reducing the humidity. Also throw in dried crushed eggshells and occasional used coffee grounds to give them grit - they reproduce better with it apparently.
    For my cold compost bins outside, I drop in 50 worms now and then thru late spring to early fall. In the summer and fall, I find fruit waste brings on the fruit flies inside so it goes outside. I am not sure if they survive our winters (zone 2b) but their eggs can if well insulated with leaves and compost. Should be no problem for your area Gary.
    Lots of lists on what not to put in for plant matter- hot peppers, citrus etc but the first year I almost lost them when I put dried black bean pods in after collecting the seeds.
    Worm castings are amazing for everything from seed starting, transplanting seedlings, top dressing to indoor tropical plants. Encourage everyone to give it a try.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the tips and your are right about the eggs. If I left them out in the winter, the eggs would make it. To keep the worms alive, I am going to put it in the basement. Hmmm, interesting on the bean pods. I havent heard about that.

    Very impressed by the worm bin system. Only addition I would make would be to elevate it, and place a plastic container with a tap on it beneath the main bottom tray, allowing extraction of the worm tea into a container through a tap. Thanks again Gary for another educational video.

    Thanks for this. I had read about red wigglers and how hungry they are Lol. The more common earth worms outside are much much slower but these type of worms are like the rabbits of the earthworm world. Always hungry and multiplying. And thanks for the tip on the temperatures. They don't like really high or really low temps. I'll give this some consideration! Let us know how it produces in the winter vs the spring/summer Gary.

      The worms do move through the compost so you get castings in there. But early on you have more starter material before you get the concentrated stuff

    I’m curious - will mosquitos breed in an open container of worm tea like that? Most of our property is shaded, poorly draining clay soil and the mosquitos are pretty bad. I’d like to try something like this, but I worry about encouraging breeding with any additional standing water/liquids. Great video!

      I havent had anyting, insect or mold, growing in that and it has sat weeks. But I dont know for sure. You can buy mosquito bits from amazon. Its organic Bt and it kill mosquito larva. Just drop in a few granulars.

    I gave up on my Hungry Bin … it just kept clogging and I got no liquid out at all. Have moved to a Tui Worm farm - much better.

      It does but it is good for 10 years. And what it will produce is expensive to buy too.
