    I've been composting in a 5 gallon bucket, and it's just not working out so well for us. This system might be a bit too large for us, but we'll consider it. Wish they made a Hungry Bin Jr. or something. Thanks!

    WOW Gary this is an incredibly impressive unit! Do you feel there are any drawbacks to it? Can you use a bucket instead of the square tray to catch the liquid?
    I might have to save up and invest in this!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 місяці тому +1

      Some people dont like the liquid as it can contain bad bacteria. So the work on limited liquid. But you can catch it with anything and use it. I use this for plants I am not harvesting from that week. So younger plants.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you so much for answering my question on this older video. I am thoroughly impressed with this system. I wish I had gotten this instead of the vermihut. But I have learned a lot about the worms from that, because I harvest from those trays. For me it is very time consuming and frustrating since my castings are very wet due to humid PNW conditions. I've tried many ways of getting the worms to move to a different tray for harvesting. But they are very happy in all the trays!

  • @AlvinMcManus
    @AlvinMcManus Рік тому

    Say do you see any reason to add ground eggshell and eppsome salt to the casting for use with fertilizing the tomatoes with worm castings every 3 weeks. "BTW not a fan of leachate. That's the sign of too much moisture in the bin or maybe a function of at system. My Urban Worm Bag has yet to drip a drop."

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Рік тому

      Not eggshells. They take years to breakdown into a usable form. And don't add much initially. ES I use infrequently now as they dont need much magnesium and sulfur. I think it is easy to add too much ES if you are talking adding crystals. I would recommend just putting a tablespoon in a gallon of water and watering in the plants. If they are needing a refresh of fertilizers, maybe again middle of the season.

    When you add food scraps in bin, do you water or moist them as well, if yes how often. What can you add or what you should not add? How about coffee waste? How about brown's like paper?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому +2

      Nope no watering. Just the scraps I add everything veggie related and it should be fresh. I think they would eat paper but I would have to double check.

    Great system. It is difficult to separate the worms from the castings in my system.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому

      So in this one the taper creates compaction and the worms move up from it. I considered so many systems and separation was one.

      I started my worm farm with a 1000 worms from Uncle Jim's 1 year ago. Today I have two worm tower set ups and 2 20-gallon totes all chock full of worms. I don't bother to separate, I just grab handfuls of vermicompost plus worms and put them in my pots or planting holes. If there is some unfinished compost, it does not bother my plants, and actually provides food for the worms. Vermicomposting is one of the very best things I have done for adding amendments to my garden.

      As with any investment, consider the benefits and balance compared with the cost of the system. Consider the cost of buying worm tea and worm castings to water your plants with worm tea and amend the soil with worm castings twice a month. Also, vegetable scraps will be thrown out somewhere, so better in a composting system than in the trash. It won't wind up in a landfill, which provides benefits to the environment and society, as well as the gardener. While in use, it's a great educational tool. This system will last for a long time if used and cared for properly. It's a matter of VALUE. It may not be for you, but I hope this system, and other recycle, re-use, and upcycle systems and practices are adopted by a great number of people. The world will benefit from the impact of totality - one garden at a time.
