Richter's interpretations of Bach sacred music, even though outmoded by the "authentic " movement, are still amongst the most beautiful ever!

Heartily agreed! Also with your wise use of quotes on "authentic", lol.

Generally, but it depends, for sometimes his overly romantic tendencies CAN be too horribly massive or ponderous or both, e.g. one of his recordings was horribly TWICE too long. Your questioning the "authentic" movement is justified, though other "experts" are also dubious. As with today's government fiascos, If only folk realized how clueless the Bach "experts" really were, like incredibly approving the infamous BWV 1096 in the 1990 BWV II that even I, a lowly janitor, knew was by Pachelbel, to rescind it a mere 8 years later in moving it to Anhang III (known spurious works) in the 1998 BWV 2a. Just because someone is declared an "expert," whether re Bach or any other matter, doesn't make them one, the old spurious logical fallacy of the argumentum ad baculum/argument from authority, manifestly fallacious since "experts" can be just as wrong as anyone, e.g. Galileo's "experts" declaring the sun went 'round the earth.

Certainly, this performance by Richter is of high quality, thanks in no small part to the intelligence and perfect elegance of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, especially in the Arioso. It is true that this interpretation has aged, in the sense that today this Aria is played much more slowly, as if on an Allemande dance step, and on a lower pitch, and the differences in timbre and tessitura of the instruments are emphasized more, as in Bach's time.
