Kubelik accompanied his father violinist Jan Kubelik when they toured during the 1930's: he was also a composer. When he conducted the NY Philharmonic as a guest during the 1970's and '80's, we played one of his symphonies. He was greatly admired by the Orchestra: one rehearsal he conducted of Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony -- he conducted straight through without stopping, right to the last bar, and when he finished, the orchestra stood up and applauded him (there was no one in audience, it was just a rehearsal during a regular week -- but no one ever forgot this rehearsal.)
Kempe was an opera repetiteur in his younger days and throughout his life played chamber music in public, often with players from whichever orchestra he was conductor of (e.g., Fritz Kiskalt in Munich, Christopher van Kampen in London - and his wife Cordula Oettinger, an excellent professional violinist). Although he began as a professional oboist in Germany, he also played the piano professionally. But, I agree, Sawallisch was the outstanding (and more experienced) pianist and a wonderful accompanist.
I once heard a really memorable broadcast of Sawallisch conducting and playing the piano part of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy. He was a big pianist, although here his playing is a bit more expressive than the other three...
Thank you for posting this as a single unbroken sequence! It has formerly been on UA-cam in four (overlapping) parts. Pity there are no English subtitles - or a recording of the public performance for which they are rehearsing! Nevertheless, this is a unique and fascinating document. In the 1970s at the Royal Festival Hall I attended a performance of the 3-Klavier concerto with Kempe, Rieger, Bernhard Klee and the RPO.
This performance puts to be any suggestion that this work is not right for pianoforte. I just wish I had a copy of the uninterrupted rehearsal - definitely my favourite. 9:57
Three amateurs at the pianos and Wolfgang Sawallisch as a professional pianist ... nice! He played often the sunday matinees in Munic with very hard works, Brahms Quintett, Beethoven Violin Sonatas and so on.
Independent to the EXCEPTIONALITY of the Interpreters, an educated Listener feels this cricket-jumping is NOT a Music intended for keyboard ; Bach transcribed it for fun-playing in a Cafee-Saloon. This is Concert 580 FOUR VIOLINS from Vivaldi, go listen the Real Masterpiece 😮😮😮
Wonderful! I saw the two RK's many times as conductors, it's so funny seeing them as pianists. WS was well-known as a fine pianist and accompanist. Kempe seems to enjoy it most, WS is the perfectionist, Rieger seems the most anxious, (maybe the least able pianist?). Kubelik holds it together with his legendary gentle authority. Most enjoyable, thank you!
Actually, Rieger was the most able of the four: a concert pianist from the beginning of his career, playing and conducting all the major concerti from the keyboard.
Herrlich wie Kempe ganz bescheiden zu Kubelik sagt:"i believe we are not together,we 3.and 4."!,at 7:40.Und Orchester denkt sich sein Teil, hier wird der Chef verbessert, prima!
If it were possible to measure the efficiency of rehearsing, this would be a good candidate - everybody and in particular the soloists know how to relate to the others so as to achieve the best result.
. Kurzum: dieses Video bestätigt all das, was man sich schon gedacht hatte.
Understanding of great spirits, brining the composers to living dialogue. How wonderful would it have been to see performance, as the feeling in that moment must have been different. For the adagio movement, this recording is the pinnacle for me: ua-cam.com/video/tJ49G2-Chhs/v-deo.htmlsi=qqWFHsGcScTCJvrV (I prefer the slower tempo 🫢)

How beatiful to see these great conductors working together in this Vivaldi transcripted by Bach!!! Great!❤
Kubelik was a great conductor, a great musican and a great person.
Diche anno e questo video.
...and this is why I love classical music.

These conductors are excellent pianists! Better than many professional pianists! I wish I could hear the performance.
Better than Who ?
Their names, please...
So precious video!! Sawallisch was a great pianist.
I hope I can listen to them " after".The most brilliant version of that stunning art.
Es ist das Sakrament der Kreativität. Wie gut verstehen sie sich! Weil sie der gleichen Muse dienen.
I once heard a really memorable broadcast of Sawallisch conducting and playing the piano part of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy. He was a big pianist, although here his playing is a bit more expressive than the other three...
Das Video zeigt was bedeudet zusammen musizieren und genießen. Großartig erlebnis mit 4 Legenden.
Einfach fantastisch.
@@mariapiazza-od8ib vielen herzlichen Dank 🎹💛🌻🙋♀️
Vivaldi transcripted by Bach. Also the original for 4 violins and cello from Vivaldi is fantastic ( maybe l prefer it)
Maestro Sawallisch, Sie fehlen mir.
The video reproduces the proof of the recording of the concert BWV 1065, made on 11/08/1972

Este video es una maravilla. Debería haber muchos de estos. Enseñan mucho
Maravilloso video
magnifique document!
What a gem! Fantastic
How Sublime is Bach!
Vivaldi transcripted by Bach
In this case ,only as sublime as Vivaldi.
-- Un document exceptionnel. --

Vivaldi's galaxy ...that is.
i wish i were old enough so that i could hear them live...
This is a treasure
SUBLIME. THank YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH.
This performance puts to be any suggestion that this work is not right for pianoforte. I just wish I had a copy of the uninterrupted rehearsal - definitely my favourite. 9:57
I have no idea what they are saying but it sounds amazing
How great! I have this live CD.
Really? What is it called?
Most interesting and empassionating !
Thanks for sharing this RARE video~~:)
Qué maravilla! Gracias por compartir! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻🌟
Fantastico,... grazie!...

Wrong: Rieger was a concert pianist from the beginning of his career. The others were not. Sawallisch never played the major concerti.
@@TheMaestromaestro And Rieger was a Nazi.... unfortunately.
This piece of music is utterly sublime. What would Bach have made of performances of this quality?

Phantastic
Magnificent. 🌹🌹🌹❤
🙏👍😊
Miracle!
Thank you soooo much for this 👍👍👍👍👍 i was looking sooooo so long for this 👍👍👍💕💕👌🏻
You and me both!
Sawallisch is trying to teach the conductors play like advanced concert pianists )))
Never too old to learn.
Because he was the best of the group as pianist
Amazing ❤

We always forget that the original is from Vivaldi for 4 violins, string orchestra and b.c....
Awesome.
The angels listen to Mozart but God listens to Bach.

To me, Kempe is the most musical of conductors. I knew he was an oboist, but I had no idea he played piano as well.

Sawallisch ⭕️⭕️⭕️🎉😊
Ein großartiges Musikdokument. - Wann wurde dies aufgenommen? - When was it recorded?
1972
❤️
W.S. is the coolest.
Wonderful!!
Bach with Vivaldi 😂😂 Beautiful!@❤
Kubelik❤
Did they actually perform and record the concerto?
Any idea about the date this rehearsal took place?
1972, for all I know ...

Of course you know this is a Violin concerto; and OF COURSE you know the Original Music is NOT Bach's 😮 🎉🎉🎉
Vivaldi, concerto per 4 violino e violoncello obbligati
Precisely!
Eh, Vivaldi is always Vivaldi, even when copied by Bach it looks like Bach.
Fritz Rieger...
Kempe es el que menos habla
❤
