Love this video Graft Man! I just finished up eating an amazing Pinkerton piece of fruit yesterday/today. Since Pinkerton is such an amazing variety (super small seed for the fruit size and delicious) I wanted to see if I could sprout it. I have never tried this but I do have 8 grafted avocado's in my backyard (all different species), one in ground and 7 in large containers and boxes with the intention of planting more in ground. Someday I will take on grafting to have some fun as well but first I'll start with trying to sprout/plant some seedlings! Thank-you for all the wonderful information you are posting.... you are contributing in a big way to my success as an avocado hobbyist! Chris
Thank you for all the tips and tricks for healthy, happy avacodo tree grafting and growing. I have been watching for a while. You provide awesome content!
I have honestly found better results using soil to grow my rootstock. Those in water tended to be "leggy" and also were a bit shocked when transplanted, which meant a lag before I can graft. In soil (even plain river sand), they can handle the re-potting and are ready for grafting in no time
@@AJTheGraftMan love to hear it. All your avocado seedlings are blowing up by the way. Got them all planted in the ground and of course the Mexican sunflowers are providing the sun protection that they need.
Great video AJ. I’ve been using Reed seedlings for years and my best grafts have been on those. I recently started growing Fuerte seeds on your suggestion. They are doing great. Going to graft on those soon. Thanks
Gostava de ter suficiente para nossa casa, e para partilhar com outros como tu fazes. It's a wonderful feeling to put to use the talents that God gave you and share with others less fortunate.Um forte abraço.
Great tips AJ. I have heaps of seedlings growing. Excited to graft this spring but we can’t get scions in Australia but I used scions from the 10 varieties I already have in the ground. Thanks for sharing
I have no formal training in this area. But to my understanding, multiple shoots coming out of a seed means that it’s polyembryonic and in other fruit, if it’s polyembryonic like in mango seeds as an example, then one of the stems that comes up is true to type. Another words, one of those probably is going to carry the same genes as the parent, a real Fuerte with seedling vigor.
I totally get your point, and it’s certainly possible, however it seems like all of these shoots are connected to one root system. With polyembryonic mangoes you can separate each of the shoots and see that they have their own individual root system. Not the case with the avocado
I've had some success with just leaving the pits in a shallow container of water (changed weekly) until the root barely sticks out of the seed, then immediately putting it in soil before it has time to grow much at all. I didn't notice any transplant shock, it also means you can basically just stick it in the top layer of the soil and not have to worry too much about the root system. My seedlings grown this way are still young though so I can't really vouch for the long term effects.
G.M. preguntas- For the toothpick seeds in the water cup, do you keep inside in shade or outside in sun? How about when they begin to develop leaves (full sun)? How often do we change the water? Looking forward to your soil episode. This potting mix didn't look like the 100% Decomposed Granite from the previous videos. Thanks again for the content.
I have a Mexicola type (black, smooth skinned) that I call “405 Freeway”. It should be a very cold tolerant type, but I don’t have first hand experience with that because my area doesn’t get so cold
Attempted my 2nd graft today, felt better about 1st one than 2nd as thr scion was smaller than root I put it on. Didn't feel great about either wrap, so I put a zip tie for added measure 🤓
@@AJTheGraftMan I just cut thr zip ties today. How will I know if it was successful? On some of your videos it looks like it's growing through the wrap, but it doesn't look like that with mine. It still looks alive but nit growing through. It will be 30 days on September 6
@@PalAl11 some grafts take quite a while to grow. As long as your scion is still green, then it’s alive and kicking. I did an avocado graft that took 4 months to grow out and push leaves through the grafting tape.
Hi, do you have any avocado plants or seeds so I can graft? I have 2 store bought avocado seeds that’s are growing roots, will they give fruit someday?
Hi yes I have a few trees and seeds available. Yes those should give fruit someday, though some seedlings will never fruit. Others can make great fruit. It's a gamble.

Makes sense. Your approach seems to be the most natural way to do it
Great video, AJ. Glad to see some info on seedlings.
Solid breakdown AJ. You do good work.
Thanks. By the way, The Mexican Sunflowers are growing so well. Also the longevity spinach is growing like a beast too

Mr AJ thank you for all you great tips!!! I can’t wait to get started on my grafts!!! 🙌🙌🙌
Thanks! Good luck with the grafting!
Thx, you are helping me getting started.
Wonderful 🥑🙂

Thanks. I’d be interested to hear your comparisons of Reed and Fuerte as rootstocks. See how they do with scions of the same variety grafted to them.

I have 5 seedlings that are ready to go into soil. It’s amazing how quickly they grow.
They do grow fast
I have a hass thank you for all the tips you gave us I have cut the top part and it has grown. I’m waiting for next year to graft it

Awesome, man!! Do you have any Fuerte seeds to sell? I wouldn’t mind trying to graft onto a couple. Thanks for the great video.
Thanks! I can send you some around December, January time. Just remind me around that time of year 🥑🌲
Me too, I'm just using Hass seeds I get from my store
Thanks brotha!

Oh yea I watched that video .. I'd like to get some budwood this fall if you get rid of any
Great video, AJ, I have a question, don’t avocado seeds need to be uncovered at the top of the pot?
Thanks. Once the sprout begins to push up towards the plastic, I take off the plastic

Did I hear you correctly that you were going to start offering scions. Will you be shipping or just local?
I plan to sell some grafted trees locally. I might start shipping trees too, but that would be in the future
Hi AJ, can you please tell me the contents of the soil mix you are using. Is it your own formulation? I can wait for the video just curious.

I can only imagine a commercial operation, with 50,000 little party cups of water.
😂
What about Zutano AJ
I thought you weren’t supposed to bury the seed!? Thanks 🙏
I wouldn’t call it burying, more like covering with a very thin layer of soil
Can I plant my avocado directly in soil not in a pot?
Yes
why dnt u wana expose the seed when in pot?..ive seen many keep half exposed
