The Mario Game SO BAD Nintendo WIPED It From History- Super Mario Bros Special

  • Nintendo has released MANY Mario games over the years, and a lot of them have either been re-released or at least acknowledged. But one of their most interesting games is when Hudson Soft made a sequel to the original retro Super Mario Bros. called Super Mario Bros. Special. It is a full on sequel to the first game, yet it remains mostly unknown. So what is the game like? Not very good. Just like many Nintendo Switch Pokemon games.

Was looking forward to this one. As someone who's actually a bit of a fan of Super Mario Bros. Special (and Hudson's PC Mario games in general) and has beaten it multiple times, and at least I'd like to think has a bit more knowledge of the game than many people, I do have some comments to add:
    1. I wouldn't really call this game a _full-on sequel_ per-se. It's more of an approximate port/demake with a lot of creative liberties. If you look at the levels compared to SMB1 you'll find that most of them aren't actually completely new levels. Some are, but most are approximate re-creations of SMB1's levels with some creative liberties. Some levels have a LOT of creative liberties, sure, but then there are many that don't really. Look at levels like 1-3, 2-2, 2-3, 4-2, 6-2 (especially this one), like half the Castle levels, etc., and you'll see they really are the same levels as their SMB1 counterparts, just with various alterations. Interesting thing about this is how the game handles SMB1's duplicate levels (such as 2-2 and 7-2). For example, Special's 2-2 is based on SMB1's 2-2, and Special's 7-2 is based on SMB1's 7-2, but the thing is, they're not reused levels in SMB Special; rather, they're TWO SEPARATE approximate recreations of SMB1's 2-2/7-2, both different from each other but both clearly still based on the same SMB1 level. Same goes for various other levels that were duplicates in the NES game.
    2. The PC-88 corruption in World 4 is a bug with the ROM that's been circulated, yeah. There's actually a patch for it that fixes this and allows you to play the rest of the game. However, you will still come across a Disk Error once you get to 8-4 (yeah, the very end of the game). There is a way to fix this but I don't remember how. There's no reason to play the PC-88 version though so not like it matters for anyone who's not a masochist.
    3. 12:47 Correction: you don't need Small Mario to enter that bonus room. You can just crouch-slide through that gap as Big Mario then enter the pipe. Same goes for most other areas that might seem to require Small Mario. The thing with SMB Special's controls is that it's much more lenient and manipulatable with the crouch-sliding than SMB1, you can finagle Big Mario through most 1-block high passageways without getting softlocked pretty easily. In fact, I can't really think of any major instances of so-called "small Mario only" areas that you can't also get through as Big Mario, whether it be that bonus room you showed there, or the second part of the bonus room in the 2-4 castle (yes, even that is still completely Big Mario-accessible with no softlock, even though it looks like you should be softlocked and in fact would be if it were NES SMB1).
    4. Interesting thing about the music being sped up: It's sped up in the SHARP X1 version specifically (unless you run it at like 4hz instead of 8, but then the gameplay would be running half-speed). In the PC-88 version it's all actually SLOWED DOWN compared to NES instead. Obviously both are due to technical issues, but I will say that some things like the Underground and Castle themes do sound kinda cool slowed down like that.
    5. Fair enough using Savestates lol. However, I will say that the Infinite 1-up Koopa Shell trick can actually be done in this game on the very first level to get as many lives as you want (I think it goes up to 255, or FF as it's displayed in Hexadecimal), and it's much EASIER to perform there than in actual SMB1, it's super easy to do in this game, basically free. That can also help make things less painful by basically removing Game Overs and the lack of continues.
    6. REALLY glad you covered the 35th Anniversary NES remake of Special romhack. That's definitely the definitive way to play SMB Special, because yeah, the original is a game with a lot of creativity and cool ideas that's nevertheless heavily bogged down by all its technical problems, only really salvageable if you're able to put up with such issues. But the NES remake fixes that, having all the massive advantages of the real SMB1 since it's a hack of that game, and none of the technical problems Special has, only the good aspects. I honestly think I also might like it better than SMB1 because it gets more creative with its level design and has the new enemies, power-ups, and stuff, while still having all of SMB1's upsides. It even has the whole credits sequence from Special (which not even SMB1 had). Frantik did some excellent work here.
People in the comments are also bringing up SMB Crossover's recreation, but honestly while it's cool, I don't think it's as good. Obviously there's the issue of whether one likes Crossover's controls and physics or not, but beyond that, the SMB Special recreation actually makes some harmful changes to the level design. For example, it raises the ceiling by one block in underground levels to match SMB1 (Special's ceiling was 1 block lower because of screen size) and that actually not only makes a certain Fire Flower in 1-2 unobtainable as Mario because it's now too high to reach, but it also makes it so that you can get softlocked in 1-2 quite easily in the area around the 1-up and Starman.
So yeah, in conclusion, while I do personally like even the original game (the Sharp X1 version of course), overall I agree with you on this game. It has a lot of good ideas and pretty good and creative level design, but objectively it's pretty much ruined by all its technical and control issues. It's made for hardware that was simply way too technically limiting for such a game like this, which is unfortunate. I still have fun with it, but that's because I've gotten used to all its weird quirks, for anyone who's not like that it is objectively trash. But yeah, clearly this wasn't a case of Hudson Soft being incompetent or causing Nintendo to regret allowing them to work on Mario, because they went on to make the Mario Party games and have future relations with them, it's just a case of the hardware itself being the chief problem, they pretty much did the best they could have done with a project like this. But the NES remake completely fixes all the issues and allows the game to truly reach what it was trying to be.

Special's 6-2 is also very much based on SMB1's 6-2, but 6-1 is the the one I was thinking of that's _really_ blatant and nearly identical to its SMB1 counterpart, the main differences just being some different proportions of obstacles here and there, and one long row of ? Blocks that wasn't in SMB1.

If you want a unique way to play SMB Special, check out Super Mario Bros. Crossover. For those who aren’t versed into fan games back in the day, it’s basically Super Mario Bros. but you get to choose as different characters from popular NES games like Link, Samus, Mega Man & Simon Belmont to name a few. While it just started out as an SMB1 remake, the game got updates that added more characters along with recreations of The Lost Levels and SMB Special plus different themes for the levels like Zelda 2, Castlevania and SML2 and skins for the characters like Atari 2600-style sprites and SMB Special-style colors for the characters. Its reputation is so well known, that the fangame Sonic Boll was created due to the original SMBC being finished years ago but never added Sonic, who was the most requested character to be in the game outside of Kirby, who also didn’t make it in and has gotten updated even to this day which basically transformed from a simple SMB remake into its own experience with multiple playable characters who aren’t in SMBC like Tails & Knuckles to name a few along with Mario & Luigi so the game can still be played like a traditional Mario game. Hoping that Demeech covers both SMBC and Sonic Boll in the future!

I am not exusing SV's optimization issues im just saying that as someone who causally enjoys pokemon SV a constantly stuttering pokemon game and a constantly stuttering Super Mario game are very different issues. A constantly stuttering pokemon game makes the developers look lazy but doesn't actually affect the gameplay, while a constantly stuttering and unstable stuttering mario game can make the game genuinely unplayable.

The port was so good that Apogee made a guerilla campaign of mailing fake fan letters to softdisk just to recruit them. They joined as a subsidiary, then eventually spun off into an independent company that made revolutionary PC games throughout the 1990s.

The Orange with Red Spots color scheme that we now associate with the Mega Mushroom used to be the color scheme of the normal Super Mushroom up until SMB2 USA and Super Mario World (arguably SMB3 too but I think the mushrooms in SMB3 were only red and white because of the limit of 3 colors per sprite, in this case taken up by white, red, and the black outline, considering how everywhere else in SMB3 except the actual levels, so in minigames and stuff, it's still orange and red). Pretty sure the Mega Mushroom being colored the way it is was a reference to the Super Mushroom's original color scheme.

CRT fan here. I noticed a few bushes and assets have holes in them that would normally get smoothed out by a CRT. I played mario bros and duck hunt when I was younger on a CRT and the pixels looked very soft and colorful I remember

You got to ask yourself one question Bowser never had children until Mario 3 when he has captured the princess for the third time one thing people don't realize or know is that I'm sure that all the Cooper's kids have come from the princess so that tells you the princess has been a naughty girl with King Koopa

The PC-88 & Sharp X1 games, the PC edutainment games, and Hotel Mario on CD-i are just a few of the gamea that Nintendo never acknowledges.
The Virtual Boy games Mario's Tennis and Mario Clash are the only two games on Nintendo systems that they never re-released or remastered in any capacity, given that Nintendo has quietly and unofficially "disown" the Virtual Boy itself.

To be fair on scarlet and violet, I’ve heard Nintendo was supposed to release a Switch Pro that got cancelled and ScarVi was meant to be it’s marquee title. They absolutely should have allowed for more time to port it down, but it does explain it’s performance issues.

I know I am VERY late to the party but: This game is similar in obscurity to Sonic Chaos, it’s a decent game, but Nintendo does its best to try and forget it. It’s the fans that stop this game from going into obscurity.

There is often a debate of what mario 2 is the real sequel but it's funny cause in a weird way Mario Special could have been that if it were released internationally and on more powerful hardware, i recommend playing it either through SMBc with the improved physics (And luigi) or The Mari0 mappack, both are amazing methods to play mario bros special.
