This was filmed at the old Riverbend Maximum Security Prison just outside of Nashville. When me & my cousin were teens in the '80's we got arrested at the Wave Pool for weed.😅 We had to perform public service & had to tour the prison as a sort of "scared straight" intervention. The prisoners screaming at us didn't have an effect on me. I just laughed! But when we got to Death Row, it was different than in the movie. In order to get to the death-chamber you actually had to walk outside the Row. It was a small brick building about half the size of a two car garage. When you walked inside it had a concrete slab with a steel top for the body, & on the other side of a partition was "Old Sparky"! It was the middle of summer & the building had no air conditioning, only fans blowing. It had been a while since any executions, but I just remember the weirdest, undescribable, sickening smell!!! & with the heat I felt like we were in hell! That part of the tour traumatized me for life!😅 It closed a few years later. A friend of mine's father was an extra/played a guard in this. I watched it once when it came out, & I never need to see it again!😥
Hope all's well, stays well, friend!🙏
    See ya!

    1. YOU WILL CRY
    2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie".
    3. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer. (most likely a racial thing. It was 1935.)
    4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row.
    5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.😭😭
    6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist,
Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse:
The Langoliers. Patricia Clarkson played Margarat White in King's remake of "Carrie". Needless to say, it was a much different part.
    7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. I know it' just for the movie.
    8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegan and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but
was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill.
    9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of being Percy.👌
    10. A little fun fact: Toot Toot the trustee is played by Harry Dean Stanton.(RIP) The other guards' names are Harry Terwilliger/Jeffery DeMunn
    and Dean Stanton/Barry Pepper.
    11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clark Duncan (RIP). They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography to make John taller.
12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution they used a real mouse and it pooped on Paul's shoulder and he brushed it off.
    13. Now we know what the "day old is fine" dry toast is for.
14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced
    the GREATEST MOVIE EVER.
    15. 4 words for you: Stephen King. You're WELCOME!

Nice reaction Maureen. Subscribed. When John says, "Give 'im to me, ... might still be time", it's implied that if the mouse died, it would be too late. Despite being severely injured, Mr Jingles was still clinging to life. He might have had only a few more seconds of life, but that was enough time for John to heal him. Also, the fact that John couldn't save the two girls is consistent with the idea that John could heal sickness or injury, but couldn't bring the dead back to life.
One additional point to keep in mind. I saw another commenter (Poor Finian) mention in a different reaction that a urinary tract infection had no cure in the 1930s, so even going to the doctor probably wouldn't help much. The first antibiotic, penicillin, was only discovered in 1928 and wasn't used on a patient in the U.S. until 1942.

Thanks John! That makes sense about Mr Jingles. I love rats. When my daughter was growing up everyone wanted other pets but she saw rats in a pet store and fell in love. We had 3 sets of 2 over 8 years. They are like little dogs. They only live 2 years so that is always heartbreaking though.

"We each owe a death - there are no exceptions - but, oh God, sometimes the Green Mile seems so long."
Fun Fact: Originally set in 1932, the timeframe was bumped to 1935 so that the movie Top Hat (1935) could be featured.
Jock Strap Incident Fact: Michael Clarke Duncan was uncomfortable with having to grab Tom Hanks' crotch for the scene where John cures Paul's urinary infection. Hanks left the set and came back to do the scene; Duncan grabbed Hanks' crotch and was shocked to discover that he had put an empty water bottle in his trousers. After that, Duncan felt more comfortable with the scene.
Measuring Up Fact: In reality, Michael Clarke Duncan was of a similar height to his co-star David Morse, and was a couple of inches shorter than James Cromwell. Amongst other things, creative camera angles were used to create the illusion that Duncan, as John Coffey, towered over the prison staff, even "Brutal" Howell and Warden Moores. For one scene where Paul, Coffey and Brutal were in the same shot, Michael Clark Duncan was standing on a plank, David Morse stood on the ground, and Tom Hanks was standing in a trench dug into the ground just for that purpose.

Living forever would be one thing in a perfect world, free of death, pain, disease, destruction and evil in general, but of course that's not the one we are in now.
I think John can only help if you are still alive, Paul refers later to Mr. Jingles as a busted mouse, so I think it's implied he hadn't fully passed succumbing from his injuries. Where the girls were likely found by John already gone, making it too late.

    • @ScreenMaureen
      @ScreenMaureen  Рік тому

Stephen King is such a brilliant storyteller. People don't always make the connection but if you think about John Coffey's initials it hits you pretty quick. JC = Jesus Christ. This is King's reimagining of the Messiah story and I think it's beautiful. You asked how old John Coffey was. I've pondered that question a lot and I think the terrible scars we see on John's back are a clue. I can't imagine anything other than being horsewhipped within an inch of your life that could leave scars like that. Which makes me think John lived many years as a slave. But during which era? Civil War? Ancient Egypt? Even earlier?? Mind = Blown!

Not a lot of people notice, but John is covered in scars that look like it was from a whip. With the story taking place in the 20’s-30’s, it may show John was around during slavery, and who knows how far back in time this miracle of god walked the earth. To me, that is why he says “He’s so tired”, because he’s lived to see the true horrors man is capable of.

⚡⚡What a great movie! This is Darabont's first film since the great "Shawshank Redemption" . That too was based on a King prison story, but this one is very different, involving the supernatural for one thing - in a spiritual, not creepy way. Darabont has made Stephen King's 🟩"The Green Mile"🟩 into a story that develops and unfolds which has detail and space. The movie would have been much diminished at two hours - it would have been a series of episodes without context. As he directs it, it tells the story with a beginning, middle, end, vivid characters, humor, outrage, and emotional release.💚⚡

Something a lot of people overlook... The average lifespan of a mouse (like Mr. Jingles) is 5-7 years. Mr. Jingles was first noticed when Paul was around 44 (no telling how old Mr. Jingles was at the time). Paul said that he was 44 when John was executed and was currently 108 (64 years had passed). That means that Mr. Jingles has lived about 9 times his normal lifespan. The average lifespan of a male is around 77 years. Imagine.... if Paul lives for the same 9 times a normal lifespan, he will quite possibly live to be around 693 years old. His Green Mile is very, very long.

When John said, "Look, its Cassie in the rocking chair", he was referencing the constellation Cassiopeia, named after the vain queen Cassiopeia, mother of Andromeda, in Greek mythology, who boasted about her unrivaled beauty. It's an interesting catch 22. We all wish for an extended life, but extended life turns out to be a curse. The whole thing seems to be the idea that being overly blessed is a curse.
I think John Coffey couldn't save the girls because they were already too far gone, and it was a bigger miracle than he could perform. Surely bringing a mouse back from the dead would be easier than bringing back two humans.

I honestly don't know about living forever. 200 or 300 would be good if everyone else does. We see people who seem to have it all and think they are blessed only to learn they have been living internally feeling like they are cursed.

In case it wasn't apparent, the "important people" who came to see Del's mouse perform were just janitors, maintenance men, etc from the prison so that Del would not be there when they had to do the rehearsal for his execution. The part where Del says, "I sure wish I could have met you guys somewheres else" always gets me because it just underscores the tragedy of making poor decisions in your life. They don't mention it in the movie, but in the book it's revealed that Del raped and killed a young girl and then set her body on fire to destroy the evidence, which spread to an adjacent building, setting THAT on fire and killing six more people. They left it out so it was easier to feel sympathy for him.
Yes, John Coffey tried to save the two girls that he came upon, but he was too late to "take it back". That's why he was wailing in anguish. He was too late to reverse their deaths. [Remember when Mr. Jingles was crushed by Percy he says "Give him to me. There might still be time."]
If we take into account that Paul was 44 in 1935 and Mr. Jingles lived about 32 times longer than a typical mouse (still alive 64 years later when mice usually only live about 2 years), then Paul should live until at least the year 4343.
Stephen King has admitted that John Coffey's initials are an indication as to who he really is. He even refers to God as "the Father" when talking to Paul and Brutal near the end.
This and Shawshank Redemption were both based on Stephen King novels and they were both directed by the same guy, Frank Darabont. He also did one more Stephen King movie: "The Mist", which has a much more science fiction angle to it, with one of the most gut-wrenching endings ever.

@@ScreenMaureen The Mist is quite good, but it is a very different kind of movie from either The Green Mile or The Shawshank Redemption. Much more science fiction-y. Regarding Percy and his leaving Cell Block E: he promised to to Briar Ridge the day after being "out front" for Del; paperwork in an organization such as this prison more than likely takes at least a few days or weeks. During this time, those sent for execution had to have not just murdered, but done in a particularly callous and brutal way and/or in multiples of victims. How long they sat on Block A (the Green Mile, the execution block) depended on how long they were able to fight a guilty verdict or the awarding of a death sentence. Those with little money (most prisoners during the Depression) didn't get far or wait all that long.
Who comes to an execution depended on the state/county/culture/laws where exists jurisdiction to execute. The Warden must attend, the guards who carry out the procedure, and the jury who made the judgement was usual; the jury were often required to attend so that they took seriously their power to condemn a person to such a fate. Often an invitation was offered to the victim's immediate family, so they could feel justice was done and they can further process their loss. Sometimes the press are let in. The prisoner's immediate family might also be allowed to attend, if the peace could be maintained.
The prisoner's right to privacy took a backseat to the beneficial impacts of an execution to the greater community; it was an established way to deter crime.
Paul's regular crew followed his lead, to treat the men with respect and calm as they moved toward their date with true Judgement. He appears to understand that most of these men were reaping the consequences of a moment or a life of bad judgements and a sense that, but for the grace of God, any one of us could be occupying one of those cells and sitting in Ol' Sparky.
Percy was a very different sort: demanding, selfish, angry, self-aggrandizing, with a talent for finding weaker individuals than himself and taking advantage of that weakness to hide his own sense of powerlessness. Pure and simple, he's a cowardly bully. No one proved that more than the terrifying Wild Bill, who literally scared the piss out of Percy.
You can't fault Paul for hoping the UTI would clear up on its own. He mentions that the sulfa drugs (the common treatment in those days) made him so sick he would be vomiting in his office. It interfered with his official duties and put both prisoners and other guards at risk. He was holding out until he couldn't stand it anymore and could find a safe moment to see the prison doctor.
The things coming out of John Coffey are flies; I suspect in John Coffey's understanding that God gives us all the good, healthy things in life, as any good Father would. But the devil seeds us with corruption, which brings suffering and pain and cuts short the good things in life. When John sees this evil, he 'takes it back'; he absorbs the evil and releases it to dissipate harmlessly. With nothing immediate to feed or infest, the evil (in the form of flies) immolates, leaving that telltale smoke (I suspect it smells of sulfur). A demon of hell Beelzebub was known as the Lord of Flies.
What Percy did after getting infected by John was respond to the terror he felt about Wild Bill. But even after releasing what was left of the corruption put into him, Percy was ruined for life. I don't doubt he was suffering from an inoperable brain tumor. And by John giving that to Percy, John probably protected all those vulnerable inpatients at Briar Ridge that a healthy Percy would have victimized.
John's power does have limits. You can tell by how he explains in his simple way that he couldn't 'take it back' for the girls because 'it was too late'. You can tell by him saying to give him the dead mouse because there 'still might be time'. If there's a spark left in the body, he can heal it, but he can't GIVE it life once life has faded; I suspect that's for God the Father to do. John can pull the living back from the edge of death, but there's a line that, once passed, makes it impossible.
It would do no good to tell the Warden; that would just burden him with a truth he has no power to respond to. Courts and authorities rest on evidence, not 'feelings' or 'impressions'. Besides, John had been condemned by a jury and sentenced by a judge; especially in the South you need compelling evidence to change a conviction.
It would do no good to try and convince the parents who lost their 2 little girls to such a horror; better to give them a way to feel justice is done and the guilty suffered, so they can try to process and heal.
The average life expectancy of a mouse in the wild is 1 year; in captivity no more than 4 years. At the time of the film, Mr Jingles had lived through 64 years since Del and John Coffey had ridden the lightning.
