As a person who has read Stephen King‘s „IT“ it‘s so hard to believe that King, being able to scare the living shit out of people with just words, also wrote this heart-wrenching story. Just goes to show how talented he really is.

A lot of people feel this way but King is so much more than the King of Horror. Stand By Me (The Body) and (Rita Hayworth &) The Shawshank Redemption are just a couple. His short stories are a great starting point for anyone not wanting horror. I love Nightmares & Dreamscapes.

If you want the questions answered or you don't and I don't know what to say to you because it seems as if you don't want the expertise of my field.

I couldn't tell you how many dozens of times I've seen this movie & I still bawl every time. And I agree with you that this story had to unfold gradually the way it did.
I never thought about how Mr Jangles exposes everyone's nature as you pointed out. Great theory.

Every scene between Michael Clarke Duncan and Tom Hanks has some of the greatest cinematic moments in history.
Duncan really should have won the Academy Award for his performance. Jon Coffee breaks my heart every time I watch this film.

It being saint Christopher is that he is the patron Saint of wonders and travelers and its believed he will help watch over people who are on a journey. John Coffey (JC get it) is a wonderer and was always moving from place to place.

Nothing "just" about being a horror writer mate. 'Carrie' and 'Misery' both nominated for Oscars, the latter winning so drop that snobby, elitist attitude.
Stephen King is a really gifted writer. He deals with spiritual issues very deftly. Master storyteller. Watch Misery and Dolores Claiborne (both superbly acted by Kathy Bates).
And I would add Delores Claiborne to that list, too.
Let's not forget the original dramatisation of The Stand, one of King's very best stories.

This was the first role I ever saw him in, and it took me a while to like him as other characters. 🤣 That's how you know he nailed it.

The first time I had seen him was when he was way less popular. I saw him in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) when I was a kid. And Galaxy Quest is one that brings on a lot of big laughs. 😆 The latter being highly underrated and what a cast in that one!

Stephen King is an amazing story teller. It always touches me and brings a tear. I'm not that old, but with my mother having passed in Feb of this year, I've pretty much lost the last person I loved. It does get lonely when your folks, your loved family and friends are all gone. I'm just waiting for my turn. 🍻

The longest documented life of a mouse was 4 years. Paul was 108 when he told this tale, 64 years after meeting the mouse. There's no basis for math that provides any reliable sense of how long Paul will live, but speculation can be much wrong if, barring accidents, it turns out to be centuries.
I think you missed it when Paul tells his wife he's been putting off going to the doctor because the doc would only put him on sulfa drugs (he's had this before) and it makes him puke a lot, even at work. It's not just the usual objection to seeing a doctor, but a semi-practical one.
Tom Hanks has a very varied career. I would look to "Cloud Atlas" as a good place to see him playing an evil character. Hanks, in makeup, prosthetics, and a thick accent, is almost unrecognizable but totally believable as a writer at a cocktail party who grabs a critic (who had written a bad review of his book) and flung him out of a window multi-stories up. Totally evil and unapologetic.
The literature this story is taken from specifies the horrific crimes these prisoners committed, but Hanks's character Paul seems to understand that what follows these men is the notoriety of what these men did on their worst day, not the sum of the good they did on their best ones. That seems to be what goes along with trying to keep things 'chill' and not over stress the prisoners. But there is definitely an attempt to leave these condemned men some vestige of dignity and accord them some remaining respect.
The speculation over the 'gnats' is that it's a manifestation (whether actual or created by Coffey's understanding) of the evil that causes illness in living things. God the Father wants only good for His children, but Satan/Beelzebub the Prince of Flies/Lies infests us with dis-ease/disease. Coffey extracts them, then as they escape in the blessed air, they snuff out like embers, leaving little smoke trails. Flies, gnats...toMAYto, toMAHto; they aren't meant to be anything but a generic species.
Good catch on a lot of things other reactors miss, like Coffey FEELING the execution pain. Coffey is a total empath, which is why existing in this world is so hard on him. I really appreciate the intelligence & compassion in your reaction.
Stephen King Superfan here! I think your reaction is right on. John Coffee is literally a metaphor for Jesus Christ. He performed miracles and then was persecuted. Even their initials line up.

Omg this film!! Every time I watch it I cry my eyes out. It’s such a great film. It’s also sad that Michael Duncan (John Coffey) died in real life 😢. I was absolutely tickled when you mentioned Saving Private Ryan, and then in the next moment when Barry Pepper is onscreen you recognize him from some Spike Lee film instead of the sniper from Saving Private Ryan.

Unpopular opinion, but I never viewed Percy as a straight "villain" per say. Like most bullies he was coming from a place of powerlessness. His fear of Wild Bill showed his true nature. Percy was not a "good" guy by any means, but I definitely felt a lot of complexity in his character personally :)
@@Stephie_L , he's obviously one of those dudes, who boasts that they ain't afraid of anything, only to be belittle people that aren't their own size. But when someone does come their way with much more intimidation, they start showing their true cowardly colors.
Now when seeing how Percy was after what Wild Bill did to him, you'd assume he'd start thinking about what he did. But once he did what he did to Del, it's obvious that he's gone too far too change now.
Del said while seated in Ol' Sparky: "I'm sorry for what I did. ..." When John awaited in the chair of death: "I'm sorry for what I am." A world of difference between those sentiments.

2) Gary Sinise (the man sitting on the porch of the house talking about John Coffey) was the second movie that Gary did with Tom. The first one was Forest Gump, the second one was this one and the third was Appollo 13. In the scene where Lt Dan shows his new legs (titanium same as the shuttle), gives a hint of Appollo 13. 3) Some may not be too religious, but if you notice, John Coffey's initials are JC ... coincidence?
4) When Belinda asks where did John get his scars, he doesn't remember, but some have said that since there was no record of him before the girls' incident, that he may have gotten his scars from the days of slavery.
5) The movie where Paul loses it at the beginning and again, near the end when John is watching it, is the classic movie Top Hat, with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing to the song Cheek-to-Cheek.
Another Stephen King adaptation worth watching is Delores Claiborne, with Kathy Bates in the title role. There's no supernatural element but it is an amazing movie. The performances, the script, the cinematography all come together perfectly. I personally think it's Kathy Bates' greatest role.

One of the only films I consider truly perfect (alongside 1957's 12 Angry Men). Imo it's perfect in it's acting, pacing, story, & emotion. It invested me in everything happening and made me care. And it definitely made me cry on numerous occasions.
I agree with you Miss Connie. The Green Mile and 12 Angry Men are both close to perfection. I’d have to give 12 Angry Men a bit of an edge based on how it was just 12 men talking and how few props there were. But still, both movies are beyond amazing.

One of the details that I appreciate, especially since I've lived in the Southeast my whole life, is how the actors always look like they're sweating. As for the prisoners, if I remember correctly, the first guy to be executed killed a man in a bar brawl. Dale raped and killed a girl, then set the building on fire to cover it up.
Good observation! Sometimes that attention to detail is what really sets a film apart as superior. And thanks for letting me know about the specifics of the inmates, it’s tricky cause the movie let’s you seek them as broken, flawed humans, yet undeniably the crimes are horrific
I’m really loving your reactions to these classics Thor. Your sensitivity to this film was really touching to watch. I really liked your reaction to that scene where the man was talking about the the woman he loved as “heaven” for him. And it’s so true what you said…criminals were not always criminals. Wild Bill is not the norm, and I don’t even think he was fully sane to begin with. That’s why this film was so emotional because, yes, we do not know the extent of the crimes committed and perhaps that’s why I really sympathised with them more than I probably should have (like Del for example), but in the end they are still people. People make mistakes and make poor choices for so many different reasons…sometimes out of their own trauma, sometimes out of desperation…I know that doesn’t excuse their crime but the execution scenes were just so inhumane and brutal to watch. Honestly, for all the talk about the afterlife, death and repentance, I kept thinking, dang I’m sure God is more merciful and forgiving than people think. Sometimes I think all this fear of condemnation is just us punishing ourselves.
PS: The blonde actor was the sniper in “Saving Private Ryan” and I just realised that the guy talking about putting his dog down was Lt. Dan from “Forrest Gump.” I’m not good with names either but I’m usually very good with faces :)
I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying these reactions, these classic movies are some of my favorites to react to. And yeah, I’d say one of the biggest lessons I got from this movie was to treat everyone, good or evil, with some respect and basic humanity, and the way you treat criminals shows so much about oneself. It reminds me of Angels With Dirty Faces (a great movie!), which I won’t get into in case you haven’t seen it. But there’s a quote in that movie that goes: “…I’m not blaming Rocky for what he is today. But for the grace of God, there walk I.”
And yeah, I knew some of the actors looked familiar, that makes sense! I’m the same way, much easier to remember faces than names
@@nickreacts6394 Yeah, and I know it's not easy being the bigger person if you're the victim of a crime but I always try to remind myself that we are all capable of making mistakes in life because there is light and dark in all of us. Anyway, I look forward to seeing you watch more classics. Classic films inspire me the most and they have taught me the most because the scripts generally have great themes, the cinematography is always beautiful and they also have the best actors. FYI, no I've not seen "Angels With Dirty Faces" but I'm adding it to my list, especially since it sounds like a film noir? That's an awesome quote by the way :)
@@Stephie_L Yeah real forgiveness, especially when you were deeply wronged, is very tough to embrace, but it's such an admirable virtue. But like you said, realizing that we all are made of light and dark is a good way to generate empathy. And I agree about classics! It's really hard to compete with the sophistication and depth that some of the classic films had, and it's almost always a learning experience for me (as well as enjoyable). As far as Angels, it's an older movie (I believe from the 30s), but my Mom showed it to me years ago, and it made a lasting impression. I would imagine it could be classified as a noir or at least it has noir elements, although in some ways it's quite different. I think you'd really like it

They're the type of films I'd love to make personally...and I'm a sucker for movies shot on real film. I think that adds to their charm as well. Anyway, I'll probably end up watching "Angels with dirty faces" this month. I was going through my wardrobe recently and I realised I have more clothes than there are days in the year, so that film can help me get through all my ironing 😂Plus, I adore old films/ black and white. They're just so timeless and I learn a lot from them too. PS: I'm still waiting for your reaction to Hitchcock's "Psycho"! :)
I somehow find it... oddly moving, that, as angry as the parents are, and as much as they hate this man for what they _think_ he did, when the father shouts at John right before his execution, he does not use any racial slurs. I mean, not that he should, of course, but for someone who has gone through that kind of pain and trauma, and especially living in a culture and society where that kind of thinking is more or less an accepted norm-- I suspect it would be all too easy to take it there, and I feel it says something about the character, that he did not.

Excellent reaction and commentary! Subscribed. I thought the film was a very faithful adaptation of the book. The film deliberately doesn't focus on the crimes committed by the inmates on death row so as to maximize the empathy we feel for them and increase the hatred we feel toward Percy, who could easily be the most hated film character ever. I've watched dozens of these reactions to the film and without exception, every reactor wants to punch Percy in the face (or have him suffer a much worse fate), almost from the first minute of the film. It's also interesting to see how reactors deal with the idea of witnesses to the execution. These aren't people off the street who just want to see a random person fry. They're the family and friends of the victims who are seeking closure by seeing the murderer of their loved ones punished for their crimes. (Although personally, I wonder if watching such an execution doesn't further traumatize them.) Thanks for reacting to this one. It's one of my favorites. Looking forward to more of your reactions. A few quality films you might consider: Shawshank Redemption, Arrival, V for Vendetta, and Ex Machina.

And I'm glad to know that it wasn't just curious people showing up to the executions... as far as family and friends going, I think those decisions are really up to the individual to make, although like you said I could see it being a traumatic experience for some. But I plan on doing at least one classic movie reaction per week, and Shawshank Redemption is definitely coming soon!

This film and The shawshank Redemption are both in my Top 10 flavorite films of all time and both written by Stephen King
These two stories alone would be enough to make King a legend, but he has so many more... and I am now a fan of Frank Darabont!
I have only sat and watched this movie 3 times myself. And yes, I spend the last 30 minutes of the movie crying my eyes out every time. But I love watching reactors watch this movie. From complaining how long the movie is, to getting into the story, to the utter confusion at John’s first miracle, to them hating Percy with pure rage as you should, to shock at horror at Dale’s turn. Finally to crying over John and the correction officers. Idk why but I love watching people go on this heart wrenching emotional journey. One reactor said “It breaks your soul but in a good way. This makes you a better person.”
Such a beautifully directed film 💯👍 never fails to blow my mind every time I watch it.. the scene at home after he gets healed by john is one of my favourites.. the slow camera movement, the warm lighting in the kitchen, the music, it's just so well done! Frank Darabont really did a good job.

The Green Mile was initially reased as a serial novel. I believe there were seven mini-paperback books released a few weeks or months apart from each other. They were reedited into a single hard cover novel a year or so later.

I had moved to France years earlier, so I had lost track of Stephen King. But during one visit my parents gave me The Green Mile to read, which was actually issued in a 5 part serial novel instead of just one big book. I'm glad they also got to see the movie, which they loved. I still have the five little paperbacks somewhere.
One if the greatest movies ever made. Beautifully shot, skillfully written and flawlessly acted by a stellar cast with a special mention for Doug Hutchison playing Percy. I do not remember hating a character as much as Percy in this movie and that speaks volumes about Hutchison's performance.
Absolute masterpiece.
I watched this movie in school at the age of 16. The whole class cried. It was so much. And to this day I get emotional when I hear the song "Heaven".
Edit: I just wanted to add, every actor in this movie does a phenomenal job. This was my first movie with Sam Rockwell and I will never be able to see him without thinking of this movie, and I've seen him in a lot of movies by now, and I am pretty sure he is a very nice guy, but I can't shake it off somehow. Not even in Galaxy Quest, and I loved him in Galaxy Quest 🤣

I will cry every single time I watch this. Every time. This poor innocent man...I was actually watching this on TV one day years ago and it had the "In Memory" for Michael Clarke Duncan and I really just kinda broke down for a minute there. Really glad you watched this one. Stephen King is a talented writer and the cast is absolutely incredible.
The book is one of my favorite Stephen King books. And the movie is one of the best book adaptations from his books. I still cry when I see the _Top Hat_ moments. _The Shawshank Redemption_ is another great Stephen King movie for the list.
Wild Bill was played by Sam Rockwell, who is always terrific in every part he plays, you should definitely delve into his filmography.
This movie is one of my all time favorites. I read the novellas as they came out. I believe there is a total of 8 about 90 to 100 pages each. In the books, it goes into detail about the crimes of each inmate on The Green Mile. Both, the books & the movie made me cry. O, to answer your question about whether or not they still allow witnesses into executions, yes, yes they do. Most often it's the families of the murderer's victims that are asked if they want to witness it. I see from comments The Shawshank Redemption was also recommended. That screenplay was also adapted from a story by Stephen King which I also read. It is another excellent movie.
Sam Rockwell in The Way Way Back is one of my favorite performances with him and he is also really good in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

A true classic
Even today witnesses are required at an execution. Often family of the victims are invited to witness. There were actually 17 trained mice, each taught a separate trick. There's another Tom Hanks depression Era movie you might enjoy called Road to Perdition.
I came looking for this comment before I made it. But I thought it was only 15, not 17.
1st time commenter. A quick note about the book/s. When The Green Mile was written, it was written as a sort of experiment for King where he wrote it in six volumes. It was later collected into one "novel" but he wrote it in parts and did not know where the story would end when he began writing the first volume. It speaks to how everyone here talks about the "gradual" way the story unfolds. Really enjoy your reactions, keep it up!
I don't think I've ever watched this without crying
It definitely takes a masterpiece to make you upset/horrified by the murder of a mouse. Such a powerful movie! Excellent cast, script, storytelling that when it ends, you can't believe it's been 3 hours. Just an amazing movie that touches everyone who watches it.
Stephen King actually published this story in little segments. He had death threats sent to finish the story (which seems counterproductive to me…)
He described the actors in the flicker show like angels in Heaven..earlier LT DAN said it was as if he just dropped out of the sky..these were clues as to his true identity..

My friend had a pet mouse. When his kid was sick, the mouse would take his favorite treats to the kid and try to give them to him. He said the mouse was normally obsessive about these treats and they fully believed this showed a deep love from the mouse.
Your commentary is on point as usual and I really appreciate the feeling you incorporate as well as the insightful dissection of the story.
In 1935, they probably wouldn’t have had any record of Billy the Kid being on the same farm as the girls. He was a drifter who did odd jobs for money and food. He got caught for another murder and they just never knew he was on the farm.

Mice and rats are extremely smart and can most definitely be trained to do all kinds of things. In some places, they even train rats to sniff out land minds and search for disaster victims buried under rubble.
I think your interpretation is spot on and I totally agree . I read this when it came out I think I was 17 it really hit me hard. They do a great job with the movie.

These are all dramas and very focused on how we all go about living life. Nearly no one reacts to these movies, but I’d really like to see more people get introduced to them. 🤗🥰

Good reaction! This movie makes me cry everytime I watch it! You said it best...killing John was like killing a child..he's pure & innocent and has done nothing wrong! I've read the book...of course it goes in a little more detail on some things but pretty much the same. One thing left out was John says a prayer on the way to his execution...wish they wld have kept that in!

Casablanca was 1942..the time was 1935..so Fred Astaire had to do..moving pictures were originally flicker shows..cuz the light did a little flickering when talkies first started..talking pictures took awhile to perfect..from when they started at the beginning of the 20’s..

Dude, I'm a guy and I've had TWO UTIs and it feels EXTREMELY painful to urinate!!!! Like peeing razor blades, man! Antibiotics work wonders but unfortunately they didn't have the complete medical knowledge of them in 1935 as they do now.
Sorry that happened, but glad to know the movie’s portrayal was accurate… I’m grateful to be alive in the time of antibiotics for sure!

It does. I have a bladder disease since I was a kid and they didn’t know how to treat me and help me until later when I was older. If you want a good laugh watch the guy that played George on Seinfeld talk about his UTI which put him in the hospital. His name is Jason Alexander and he told this hysterical story about it and how awful the pain was, and later he had surgery and his dr lied and said it was a walk in the park, and Jason said it was like peeing fire! He also got stuck in traffic and said he was literally tearing the seats up and then got out and some firemen said hey look there’s George when he was in agony,he was hoping they would stop and help him and they just waved and said hey look it’s George. It’s a classic story if you ever had a bad UTI. You will laugh even though you know he suffered. It’s on UA-cam.
This cast is really fantastic. You might know Barry Pepper from Saving Private Ryan along with Tom Hanks. David Morse. Jeffrey DeMunn who works often with Frank Darabont, recently in The Walking Dead. James Cromwell. Gary Sinese who can be seen in Forrest Gump along with Tom Hanks. Even Graham Greene in a small role.
I love this movie. The book originally came out in 6 parts. After that they eventually came out with a hardcover of the book. Great book. A competing Author, John Saul did the same thing around the same time with Blackstone Chronicles. It was a good book too.

I love how it has a supernatural aspect, but all the horror is grounded in reality.
You said you would have gone with _Casa Blanca_ instead of _Top Hat_ (the Fred Astaire movie the guards ran for John Coffey), but Casa Blanca didn't come out until 1943. This movie makes clear right at the start that the year of John Coffey was 1935, which was also the year _Top Hat_ was released. They were showing John a current movie.

I think John Coffey is scared of the dark, because that’s where he goes in his mind when feeling other people’s pain and healing them. When he heals Melinda, she says that she dreamed that they “found each other in the dark.”
Coffey and Brutus…David Morse were in fact about the same size..but camera angles made David look smaller..not the first time that’s been used..like 1954’s SHANE..

makes you wonder how long Paul will live, eh?! Several hundred years probably. And his penance is to lose everyone he loves, to outlive them all.
