I'm a grown man and I still choke up during the final act when Forrest asks if Forrest Jr. is smart. Not just one of the greatest movies of the 90's, but one of the greatest movies of the 20th century.
Tom Hanks does it all with his eyes. Don't blame you for choking up.
Same. Every single time. Forrest never once complained but he knew how different and hard life was for him and he didn't want that for little Forrest.
Forrest Gump is one of the greatest movies ever created, period.
Not now, not then, not in the future. Ever.
"Is he smart or is he.. (like me?)" by Tom Hanks is one of the greatest lines ever delivered on celluloid.
1: I still hate Jenny for robbing Forrest of knowing he would be a father and be there at birth. That is evil. 2: I love that Lt. Dan has a Taiwanese fiance, it's perfect redemption arc all the way.
I would love to see her react to more Tom Hanks, like Cast Away. He really has a lot of great films. I loved her reaction of green mile seeing forest and lieutenant Dan in the same movie!😊😊

*I like how the plot rolls out in the opposite arrangement of a theme paper. In a theme paper, you state you thesis and prove it in the body of the text. In this movie, the proofs of the theme are given from start to finish, then the theme is given when Forest is at Jenny's grave sight. The entire movie is summarized with Forest's rhetorical Q and A with Jenny. Forest wondered if Momma or Lt. Dan was correct: do we all have a destiny or are we floating around on a breeze? Forest concludes, "I think it's both...happening at the same time." Then you can recall all the events in Forest's life are a mix of divine intervention and free-will choices by Forest. Beautifully poetic.*

11:28...I can attest from personal experience that they actually DO have busywork assignments like cleaning the floor with toothbrushes. One time I had to gut the entire lawn outside the DFAC with scissors.

Great one again, Maureen. Having seen the film many times was happy when you said that Jenny was "a free bird" knowing that not too long later the song "Freebird" would be used in the balcony scene with Jenny. Keep up the good work.
Wonderful reaction! Forest Gump is a window to the historical past from the 60's to the 90's which I certainly can relate to being born in 1960.

The cinematography, creativity and heart of this movie was amazing. Tom Hanks is brilliant even playing a local idiot. My Mom looked exactly like Sally Field when we were kids, we thought she had a secret movie career. I honestly cried when she died. I love that Lt. Dan's "magic legs" were made from the same material as the space shuttle. The next year Forrest and Lt. Dan were in Apollo 13. "Is he smart?" tears again...That's all I have to say about that.
Forrest learned to be non-judgmental by being told about his KKK relative, and how sometimes people did things that just don't make sense
I remember seeing this in theaters in elementary school. It was the only movie my mom and stepdad saw in theaters. I watch every reaction I can and I love your channel. I was 8 and was ENTHRALLED and caught most of the cultural references and adult jokes. This is not my first video of yours and I wish they were longer :-) sending love to you and yours from Orlando Florida.

Jenny always told Forrest to run because that's the only way she knew how to deal with problems...to run from them. People tend to be hard on Jenny, but she had a lot of unresolved issues from her childhood with her abusive father. Any time Jenny would show up, I think it was because she wanted to give an honest try with Forrest for a normal life. But she doesn't know how to love or accept love, and so she'd run...mostly to protect Forrest from her emotional baggage. She's a very complicated character, and I think too many people take the easy and lazy route by just writing her off as a self-serving manipulative bitch.
It's easy to be bitter and dismiss, harder to empathize someone who's gone through what other's haven't.

@@idiot_city5244 Playing devil's advocate here. It wasn't 5 years, Forest ran for 3 years, and you have to take into account the 9 months for the pregnancy. They used an older actor for some reason, but that child wouldn't have been 3 years at the time he met him. All that to say, she didn't tell him because he took off running the morning she left and never stopped. They didn't have cellphones back then, so how would she be in contact with him? There's no way she could've predicted where he would go next, plus, he never stayed for long, he just ate and slept, then kept running. That's the only time I give her the benefit of the doubt.
@@iulia.bianca.b you seriously think Jenny would have tried to contact Forrest soon after leaving that morning...? You also need to realize the reason he was running like that is because she totally broke him... like completely lol. That's just his way of dealing with that grief/broken heart. He was also ALL OVER the news when running because people were fascinated by it, she could have easily found him if she wanted to. There's no excuses for hiding Forrest Jr, Jenny even says when they meet up at her apartment that she really messed up and apologizes for disappearing

Great reaction Maureen like always, this movie its one of my favourites its such a masterpiece of cinema. and a fun facts about this movies Tom Hanks’ brother did some of that running in the movie Jim Hanks, himself an actor and filmmaker, doubled for his older brother on set, including in numerous sequences featuring Forrest’s high-knee, arm-pumping run. Tom hanks daugther was in this movie in a cameo if you keep an eye out for a surly redheaded girl in the bus scene, when young Forrest can’t find a place to sit (until Jenny invites him to sit next to her). That’s Hanks’ daughter, Elizabeth. And if you are wondering what Gump says in those few moments of radio silence? Well, according to Tom Hanks, the full speech reads: “Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. If you like Sally Field, you should watch her second Oscar and best performance in a quiet little film called Places in the Heart. Nobody much has reacted to it.

“There is only one thing I have to say about the War in Vietnam. Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don’t go home at all. That’s a bad thing. That’s all I have to say about that.”
Also, good on you for getting most of the historical references that other more innocent reactors often don't. The one you missed was legendary Alabama football coach Bear Bryant as the recruiter at the field where Gump runs away from the truck.
Being older has 'some' benefits I guess 🤣 My husband is a big sports fan but said he has never heard of Bear Bryant. 😯

"Places in the Heart" is one of my all-time favorite movies!! A memorable Classic for sure!
You dont have to be old to know about only 130 years of american history (Europe has 20times more not to mention Asia/Africa...) , football, "Imagine", Apple or HIV. I've heard about all of this before I was 20 years old. And remembered when the movie came out few years later.
1. The music rights alone must have cost a small fortune💲💲
2. Kurt Russell did the voice for Elvis.
3. IRL Sally Fields is only 10 years older than Tom Hanks.
4. Having gotten his degree Forrest would have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. Not a recruit. His ASVAB kills that.
5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around.
6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date.

8. Jenny died of Hep-C from dirty needles when she was in Caliphony..
9. It's ironic that Lt. Dan told the guys to take care of their feet because he loses his.

11. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis, John Lennon, Abby Hoffman to Vietnam and Watergate. Even the jogging craze of the 70's. About the only thing left out was streaking.

A story of two contrasting lives of Forrest & Jenny
One of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen.
And „run, Forrest, run“ has worked its way into the quotes used in my Western European country.
I use it every time I see someone run.
Yeah, pretty much every time.
What you said about this movie makes me think of a quote from another. "He was a rock they broke themselves against however much he tried to protect them.” I would love to recommend Legends of the Fall.

I love this movie so much. I first saw it in 2020. When I heard Jenny say "virus" I also thought HIV or AIDS but when they meet again it was somewhere in the 80's and doctors knew about the virus back then, she says doctors don't know what it is so I would guess hepatitis ( from her drug use or sharing needles )or something else. I could be wrong but thats my guess.

Momma lied to him about his father being on vacation. Jenny had Hep C not HIV. Many UA-cam reactors call Jenny the B word. Because of her abuse she never felt worthy of anyone's love; especially Forrest's. You really dont remember a thing. When I watch a movie, I never forget it.
To her credit and as with most movies she watches, Maureen never criticised Jenny's actions knowing whence they came. Kudos!
We are the opposite. Me and my husband can't remember a movie we have seen a month ago. 🤣 I was a young mom at the time and probably had my mind elsewhere.
When my husband was editing this movie he said 'wow, I didn't know this movie was so good' The only thing he remembered was Forrest running because it reminded him of Terry Fox.
No she 100% has HIV as its literally the exact period of time when it exploded. She used needles…
Hep c was not a phenominon like HIV. The movie focuses on those huge historical moments and Hep C is definitely not in that group.
@@btnhstillfire In the book it was identified as HEP-C. I do believe Spielberg stated it was changed to HIV for the movie, though it is never identified as either.

In the novel its Hepatitis C which was a new virus at the same time that HIV. But everyone says it's HIV.
Jenny seemed too young to die from Hep C given the natural course of the disease but I guess a lot was unknown at the time.
In the book Forrest was also a maths genius and became an astronaut

Forrest's mother is very much like my own, mine died of cancer as well, but all throughout my life she was very blunt and never really sheltered or hid things from me, she had always told me stuff exactly as it was but in ways i'd understand. It scared me at times but frankly i think its one of the best ways, just tell things as it is. Even when i was quite young she didn't hide the really horrible shit, she just told me and if i was scared she'd explain it.

This movie was a cultural reset back in its day! I can't believe this is your first time watching it, loving the retro movie moment! I'd love to see you watch another oldie like Death Becomes Her with Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep, its a dark comedy and one of my favorite classic movies!
Death become her sounds familiar, not certain if I have seen it or not though. I honestly can't remember movies very well like some people can. The only movie I can remember well is The Sound of Music as it was so impressionable to me as a child and I watched it every time it was on TV.

A real life thing that came from the movie there was a chain of Bubba Gump shrimp restaurants. It isn't a large chain. I think they told me that there were around 30 in the United States. I ate at one at Universal in Florida. The shrimp were just okay, but it's there.

Forrest Gump won best picture over Pulp Fiction. Back then people treated it as a slight. As much as I loved both movies...and I saw them both with my conservative catholic parents....I'm gratified to see that this movie is still affecting people all these years later. While Pulp Fiction was groundbreaking, this movie brought a love of life, that transcends. I'm actually grateful to all the people....young, older, and everything in between....who do these reactions. You are a forum where we all can feel good, sad, scared, ecstatic, etc....together.

Everybody always wonders what happened to Jenny's dad and her sisters - so I made up a prequel to explain the mystery. Below is the plot if you're interested. Enjoy.
In 1953 Forrest’s dad was a young pastor, a public moral crusader, and secret Klan leader.
Forrest’s mom is a pastor’s wife and young mother (of Forrest). She is from an old and respected family. Together they are upstanding members of the Greenbow community.
Jenny’s dad was a middle-aged farmer and a regular at a local brothel.
Some years earlier, as a teen, Jenny’s mom had broken her back and lost her family in a train wreck. Now a paraplegic and an orphan, she resorted to prostitution to survive. She became one of three young prostitutes at a brothel in an old rural house outside of Greenbow. This is where she met Jenny’s dad.
When Jenny’s mom gets pregnant, she goes to Forrest’s dad’s church that is having a revival meeting. There she is converted and eventually baptized by Forrest’s dad. She is convinced to marry her baby’s father and leave the brothel behind. The couple become engaged and begin to plan a wedding at the church after her baby, Jenny, is born.
Meanwhile, Forrest’s dad, believing Jenny’s mom has left the brothel, convinces the Klan to ‘cleanse the county’ of the ‘filthy brothel’ and they go one night to the brothel house. There they order the prostitutes out of the house. The two prostitutes go outside, but Jenny’s mom and her baby (staying there but no longer a prostitute) hide inside. The two prostitutes convince the Klansmen that Jenny’s mom has left the house because she had her baby and is now engaged. Forrest’s dad believes them and helps to convince the other Klansmen. The other Klan members then put the prostitutes in the barn and light the brothel house on fire. The housefire begins to attract the attention of other people. Just then, the Klansmen realize that Jenny’s mom is trapped inside the burning house. Forrest’s dad runs into the house and carries out the baby. The townspeople are about to show up, so the Klan members flee. The prostitutes take the baby and can now also flee. Forrest’s dad courageously goes back into the burning house to get Jenny’s mom who can’t walk. He carries her out, but she is badly burned.
The now unmasked Forrest’s dad is recognized by the now dying Jenny’s mom and she - in her pain and anger at what she believes has been the loss of her baby - she accuses him of the fire in front of others. She soon dies in the arms of her fiancé as everyone looks on. Everyone assumes that the baby was burned up in the house fire. Forrest’s dad is arrested and out of fear for his family’s safety is unwilling to incriminate the other Klan members. Forrest’s dad is now disgraced, loses his church pastorate, and he is eventually convicted of arson and murder. Forrest’s mom does not believe in divorce and is convinced he was wrongly convicted. He is given a sentence of life in prison. (Which is why she tells people he is on vacation.)
After the fire the two prostitutes have nowhere to go so, they take the baby to her father’s farm. Because of threats from the Klan they all stay undercover at his farmhouse during the trial of Forrest’s dad. Jenny’s dad is delighted to discover his daughter survived the fire but is so upset at Forrest’s dad he stays quiet about it. Jenny’s father is in grief and anger - can’t take care of both the baby and the farm all alone, so the women stay on with him. Eventually the women continue their trade in the farmhouse which becomes a new local brothel house.
The local Klan, now free from the moral influence provided by Forrest’s dad, becomes uglier about race, power, and control. The brothel prostitutes provide free services to some Klan members, and alow use of a place among the tobacco fields (for their cross-buring rituals) in exchange for protection to freely operate an illegal brothel in Greenbow.
Jenny is raised in the brothel, seeing, and experiencing everything that goes on there she is sexualized at a young age. (Which is why she ends up a stripper herself.) Jenny’s father becomes a drunk and a pimp for the prostitutes who work there - and not much of a farmer. Jenny grows up calling the prostitutes ‘her sisters’. Jenny knows the names of all the men of the community that go there including Klan membership and a certain school principal.
When Jenny gets old enough to attend school - other parents complain that a girl who lives in a brothel is attending public school with their children. Out of fear that she may talk names - the Klan turns on Jenny - She miraculously escapes several attempts on her life. In a final attempt to kill her some key Klan members are themselves accidently killed. Under more community pressure and scrutiny, the Klan can no longer protect the brothel for fear of further public exposure. The police raid the brothel, arrest Jenny’s dad, and the prostitutes. Jenny is placed, by the police, in the care of her paternal grandmother. (This is why Jenny and Forrest never had any friends at school - except for each other.)
The rest of the story is told in the movie “Forrest Gump”.

Wrong. HIV. Hep C would make no sense as HIV was exploding in that era and had a major impact on culture. Hep C did not. This movie focuses on those major events.

The boy who plays Forrest as a child, was a cold hire from Mississippi. Just before filming, Tom and the boy hung out, and Tom absorbed the boys accent. The boy wasn't faking.
In the book, Jenny contracts Hepatitis C from her drug use. They left that info out to let the viewer imagine their worst.

Well, maybe Jenny got HIV from needles.
She was also a "flower child" of the "free love" era and at least sometimes a sex worker, so, you know, maybe she got it the old fashioned way too.
Either way, Jenny had an awful childhood and never recovered; we see her with ideation twice in the movie but in the end, her life choices killed her anyway.
I say this as a father who lost a daughter to bad life choices.
I have all they sympathy in the world for anybody going through that, including my daughter and fictional Jenny, but it's not sympathy that can save them; rather, it's helping them know that their life choices have very awful consequences and better choices are all around them if they just look, and believe in themselves.
I'd tell you to watch Band of Brothers, and the Pacific, both Directed by tom hanks, but I don't know if you could handle it.... both chronicling WW2, European and the pacific parts of the war.

@@ScreenMaureenBand of Brothers is easier. It gets hard because it is about real men. When things get tough we feel it more deeply because it is real, unlike CGI super hero junk. There are very few WWII vets around today. It is very important to remember what they did.

What a disappointment. I saved this to my watch later file. Getting around to watching and the first thing I hear is that you've already seen the movie. Doesn't sit well for a reaction video. Ugh, oh my.

She was also his only friend when they were young, the only other child who ever asked him about himself
@@jowbloe3673 I had a friendship similar to that with a girl, we grow up together, but we both went off in different directions, and one day believe it or not I was stopped at gas station and heard this voice call my name and it was her. She said to me I recognized your voice, we hadn't seen each other in 20 years, but she recognized my voice.
We talked, we gave each other hugs and again went our separate ways. Then some years later I got the terrible news, she had died suddenly of an aneurism.
The ones you expect to somehow see again are the ones that when you hear they are gone really hit hard. Now all she is memories.
Has we often do, we don't realize how much a person meant to us, until they are gone.
