OMG, every word about your symptoms I have had since March of 2021, I have my surgery Oct 13, 2022. This has been so helpful for me. I'm scared of the surgery but the need for relief from this pain is greater. You help me be optimistic. Bless you!
thank you for the very good video I'm having surgery on the 28th of Dec. I'm 75 and have had a laminectomy on the lower back, and scoliosis that also has bone spurs, I'm hoping this surgery gives my arms and neck more stability, I don't have much help I will stay @ Son's home for a week or two. hope I will be able to manage @ home on my own thanks again for your video and hope you continued to do well.
Best wishes, Joan! I hope your surgery gives you what you need. Come back and let me know how you are doing. I'll be thinking of you; sending good healing vibes your way!
Thank you so much for sharing. I myself have been diagnosed with DDD about a month ago. Getting ready to start PT and injections. My chiropractor took X-rays and he was finally able to push for an MRI. Disc’s 6&7. He wanted a 2nd opinion so my info was sent to my neurosurgeon. He would like to see me push through PT and injections and if that doesn’t help we will revisit surgery. I was honestly praying for surgery because if my neck pain. It’s so miserable. By the time I am finished with shots and PT I will more than likely be pushed into another MRI and then it will be time for surgery. It’s insane what insurance makes you go through first in order to fix the problem. Glad you did well.
I have watched many UA-cam videos of ACDF surgery and yours is by far, the most comprehensive and helpful! Your description of your pain prior to surgery matches my pain to a T. My surgery is next month and I am in so much misery, like you I cannot wait for this surgery to take place. Thank you for the extensive play-by-play of the surgery. Presented like a true teacher! I hope you are continuing to make a complete recovery!
Thank u so much for sharing your experience! I could not explain it any better. 4 yrs ago, I had a work accident. After numerous x-rays, CT, MRIs, it was finally discovered 2.5 yrs after my injury, that my c5-c6 was the culprit for my pain. 5 months later, I finally was approved for Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion. Surgery was on July 16, 2021. With the help of PT, I did feel better for a few months then plateau, and pain was returning. (I have continued PT throughout.) 8 months after the surgery, the surgeon suspected that the plate may not have been reinforced enough. X-rays and MRI showed that the c4 took the brunt of bracing the plate and was repeating what the c5-c6 had gone thru. A 2nd surgery was needed to 1) remove the orig plate, and 2) attach a new plate to the c4-c5. During my 2nd surgery on Sept 15, 2022, it was discovered that the screws of the orig plate had loosened but thankfully, the c5-c6 discs fused! The immediate concern was that cervical vertebrae was shifting, bending. The surgeon then ended up applying a new plate from c4 to c7. (My c6-c7 were fused congenitally.) A big plate. Surgeon called me a few days ago and said I needed a THIRD surgery in the coming weeks! Going in from the back of the neck, another plate will be installed on the left side of the c4-c7 plate. I imagine a plate "sandwich." This is where I am today. I still am hopeful. I have to be.
Oh my, Stacey ! I am sorry to hear of all your troubles! I wish you well with this surgery! I hope it is your final one! Come back and let me know how you are doing! Be well!
I'm due to have the same surgery in July. A bit nervous. But more so about being put to sleep. However, I need this pain relieved. Thank you for sharing this..
Holly, I totally hear you on the anesthesia. I was too, but it is fine. Yes, I was nervous and that morning did not feel like myself but reminded myself all will be well, have faith in the Lord and the doctors and tried to acknowledge my nerves and tell myself I am okay. I expressed the nerves to the nurses and they acknowledge it as well. I think most everyone feels the same. I was given a sedative right before being wheeled in which acted super fast I barely had time to say see you later to my husband and I was out! You'll do well and not be in pain! Come back and let me know how it goes! Sending prayers and healing vibes!
Okay so I watched the rest of the video and am nodding head. So my surgeon is doing access on side not front, but we have similar symptoms so hopefully after 4 years and facing SSDI and early retirement I can get back in the game. Am approaching this slowly, doing my homework, watching a bunch of videos etc. When I had my 4 stents put in neck at cath lab at Stanford 2009, was awake for whole thing and it was coordinated chaos, I mean WOW. Then I put out the video on my page to educate people because we were the guinea pigs for the new procedure. But also know I don't know what I don't know, so THANK YOU for helping me make my list of Q's to ask 4/21, the list is growing. Thanks again for taking the time and sharing your life with us. God bless.
Hi Mark! Sorry for the long delay in replying; I was away visiting my daughter. I am glad you will be getting the surgery later this month and truly feel you'll get relief! Come back and let me know how you are doing! Take care!
This really helps, I've been suffering from this for over 4yrs it just gotten worse over the years , I'll be having my surgery on 05/17/21. I can't wait to be myself again. Hope your recovering and heal well thanks you so much for this ❤ I cried with you because I know the struggles I been to physically therapy, trigger point injection, epidural, chiropractor, and dry needling and excited for surgery praying 🙏 for relief.
Hi, there good morning just an update tomorrow will make a month of my surgery, I felt a big difference right after, there's still little tingling and weakness here and there put as time progress that should heal, still some tenderness in the neck area but seems to be doing well I do go back to the dr on the 22nd of June. I have to say sneezing was a challenge every time it was happening I said to myself oh boy here we that was a funny challenge, also I had a soft collar totally different from what you've gotten, thanks much for your prayers stay bless 🙌🏾
My sister had her surgery today. She awoke in still excruciating pain. The Dr said, “She cleaned as best she could. Not to panic, that it could take a couple of weeks for the pain to go away. I am so sad & feel for her. I pray some miracle for her to be well. Please pray for her too. Thank you.
@@theplanninggirl She was discharged today. Another neurosurgeon who works with the one that operated told her today that she has a lot of inflammation & it could take up to a year to feel better. Needless to say, that got her more depressed. She told me, “I am now worse off than I was before.” God has the last word & I need to trust Him in getting her better. Prayers are greatly appreciated.
@@bets8483 I am praying. I think/hope when your sister is home and in her own environment doing her own thing, she will heal. Come back and let me know how she feels!
@@theplanninggirl Thanks be to God all powerful & glorious! Today, my sister woke up feeling so much better & in better spirits. You have no idea the joy that brought to my heart. For me, it’s a miracle! Prayers were answered. She will soon be starting physical therapy & she’s happy with that. Based on what the last neurosurgeon told her, God indeed has the last word. Thank you for your prayers! God bless
Thank you so much for detailing your journey! I’m almost to the point of having one and have been stressed out about the recovery process. I’ve had 2 ACL and Medial Meniscus surgeries in my 30s and a knee replacement 5.5 yrs ago in my 40s. Now I’m 52 and facing this in the coming months. I’ve compared this cervical stenosis surgery recovery to be much harder than the replacement was but you have such a positive vibe and are making it seem much easier than I’ve been imagining. I was diagnosed with congenital cervical spinal stenosis, arthritis, degenerative disc disease and a pinched nerve now on both sides of my neck back in late 2013. Now due to that I have bulging discs in all C3-C7 discs with the C3-C4 being the most degraded and the others not as bad yet. The first Dr I saw last month suggested surgery now, went to a second opinion to a brain and spine Neurosurgeon and she says it’s bad but not horrible like she’s worked on. Perhaps she was referring to the discs that aren’t as bad yet. I’ll be going to her when the time comes. Until then, I’m on muscle relaxers and will then move to pain injections when the nerves get bad. Right now there’s just minor compression and the pinched nerve acts up when I overdo lifting heavy things. Thank you for easing my mind by sharing with us your story. I hope you’re in excellent spine health and living a great quality of life.
Lyn, I thank you for your kind wishes and hope all is going better for you. I am sorry you must face the same difficulties. I am doing well and am so grateful for my surgery and recovery. I was afraid, I think we do fear the unknown, and that is one reason I wanted to share my story so others would not be as frightened. It really was a good experience and I am so so much better now. I wish you well and good health. Come back and let me know how you are doing!
Thank you for your video, I appreciate how informative you are. My wife is been going through so much over the last 10 years. With all the pain meds, therapy, tens machine water therapy, shots. And has decided, to have this surgery. She not only has cervical issues, but lumbar issues that may be addressed later. I have Multiple sclerosis and have had to watch her struggle with this, knowing that there isn't much I can do but support her and love her. Her Surgery is 6/15. God bless you for doing this video. Hope you are doing well. Thanks.
Tim, thank you for your kind remarks and sharing your story. I am sorry to hear your wife has had such a rough journey and pray she is feeling back to her former self after her surgery! Come back and let me know how it goes! Take care!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I am having this surgery on April 25th 2022. This has helped with my mindset for the upcoming procedure. Especially the neck brace. I do not like anything on my neck and the brace does not compression against the front of the neck - so I feel a lot better. Again, Thank you!
I'll be thinking of you, Sharon! There is as much tightness to the neck brace as you allow, and as you saw, it is not really a bad thing. I was comfortable and towards the end of my needing it, ready to not have it. I am sending good vibes and quick healing! Come back and let me know how you are doing after your surgery!
I enjoyed your video. I had 5,6 and 7 fused a week ago. I smiled when you told of using a straw and putting a napkin under your chin. I do the same. I looked forward to my surgery to relieve the pain and am so glad it's over.
Thanks for this vid. My story is almost exactly the same as yours. My op is this Friday 27 May. Very nervous but your full description and vid has put me at ease. Hopefully pain free from next week. Regards Shaun - Cape Town
I am glad my video was helpful. I will be thinking of you tomorrow. Come back and let me know how it goes! I am sending prayers and good healing vibes!
@@theplanninggirl Hi there, just over a week and recovery is going well. Staples coming out tomorrow👍 The day after the op I developed a lung infection, so was in hospital a few extra days. Otherwise all good 👍
I'm having surgery in a week C5-C6,C6-C7. I've been off work for 4 months with pain/numbness in my arms. I'm scared, but proceeding because I can't live like this. Thanks for sharing your story.
@ I am doing much better. I still have pain and numbness in my fingers and down the backs of both arms and but it is greatly reduced and now I recognize my flare ups as signs of systemic inflammation related to food and stress. Coping means embracing a new perspective on wellness and mindful approach to lifestyle choices.
If anybody out there reads this, I have some advice. My Dad has a furniture store and I have an adjustable recliner where the headrest moves. It has been a big help to me. Occasionally I take the brace off and adjust it to keep my neck straight. I highly recommend everyone to get a recliner like this if their having surgery.
I am very fidgety and I have this disease at 40. It was in my case due to stress, my bad sight (needing to move my head forward to see well the screen), lifting heavy shopping, all those things together. My spine looks like I had a car crash, but I did not. I also need this surgery, will get it probably this year. All the best to you. Hope you are doing well.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I am scheduled for August 18th, and I am nervous. Your video has really given so much info. I’m so glad you’re doing well.
@@theplanninggirl it's been 3.5 weeks now and I'm thrilled with my recovery so far - I feel great, with no pain (aside from some shoulder ache the first couple of days I've been pain free). Thanks again for posting this video - it was one of the few on UA-cam that were positive and multilevel and really gave me hope! I started recording videos myself to help others in the future who are getting this surgery. Again, thank you! My ACDF playlist: ua-cam.com/video/yWT3cip_6aU/v-deo.html
I will be having ACDF surgery on my C6 and C7 on Dec 10..thank you so much for explaining the process as I am very nervous..I just turned 49 on Thanksgiving and I have been suffering with spinal problems for years..glad to know your surgery was a success..Thanks again 🙂
Well well there Jacqueline my surgery is on the 10th as well may you have a great success and wish the best also come back on here and let us know what happen I’ll do the same, mines is for my C5, C6 and C7 👍🏽😊
thank you for your description of the process..I kinda wish I had found this before my surgery on this past Tuesday but found you today, Sitting here near Buffalo NY happy to have made the decision to go ahead with it. August 12th first visit with surgeon to October 12 surgery..feels like the longest time Happy you are recovering I will look to see if you have more post surgical videos Hope you have had a good school year to dates. I am in middle school..now off til December. Cheers deb
Oh we are not far from each other at all. I am in Pennsylvania, just below the NY border and visit Buffalo frequently! I hope you feel fabulous! I do have a follow up video which should be linked to this one! It is this one: ua-cam.com/video/RqC2IbUyBig/v-deo.html Now that I am a year out, I would say I feel like myself still. I do have most feeling in my left fingers, though there has been some permanent damage I think as they are tingly at times. But I have complete use of them! I am having a good school year so far, though I hate wearing my mask all day, especially when trying to teach the kids to pronounce words, but hey, we do what we have to do! I hope you have a fabulous school year and speedy recovery! Come back and let me know how you are doing!
My surgery is the 17th of October and seeing you emotional is confirmation that I am making the right decision. My auto accident was November 2021. IM OVER IT!! I’m searching the internet now for a cheap recliner because I’m planning to sleep in it for the first few weeks. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. ❤️
I really appreciate how thorough you were! And can I also say, I’m 31 and waiting for the same surgery. My situation sounds almost identical to yours, same arm radiating, same discs, same 3 fingers numb, and I CANNOT believe you withstood that pain for that long! The day after my second adjustment from my Chiro was when I had the “pop” and the day after I was in the ER with pain and getting an MRI. I can’t even imagine weeks upon weeks of that insane pain. The only reason I’m able to survive waiting for my surgery (it’s in 3 weeks) is due to two steroid epidural injections ive had since my initial pop. I hope your husband knows how incredibly strong you are!!
I am sorry you have pain and must endure waiting! I had to wait because the insurance company gets to decide all the hoops I must jump through to determine if I can be eligible for an MRI. Crazy, huh? I wonder if things wouldn't have been so bad if I could have had the proper care from the get go. But, it happened as such and I am alive and well. Come back, Kelsey and let me know how your surgery goes! Thinking of you and sending good vibes!
Thank you very much for sharing your experience with the cervical disk surgery and I am very happy that you are well and pain free! 🙌🏿 Im having the same surgery on Sept 1st, I have been through alot for over 5 years and things has just gotten worst. I thank God that I found out my issue was and now I'm looking forward to my Healing and to continue on with a better life. May God continue to bless you and heal you really good. 🙌🏿🙏🏿
My surgery is October 17th. I was hesitant at first. Now I'm so ready the pain is so unbelievable unbearable that it consumes my life. I hope and pray for relieve after my surgery
Mickey, the pain is all consuming. I pray you get relief! I know I did and I am so so grateful and thankful that the whole ordeal is over! Come back and let me know how you are feeling! I'll be thinking of you! Sending good, healing vibes your way!
@@mickeyriley1162 After my final doctor's visit before the surgery, I was sent to the equipment store across the road and bought it. It actually was covered by my insurance, and I paid a small copay. The shower collar was given to me by my doctor at the hospital the day after the surgery.
Thank you so much for sharing this with everyone. When I had the surgery in 1999 there was no way to find this detailed information from someone who experienced it & I believe it would have been very helpful. You are doing beautifully! Best wishes with your continued recovery!🤗
Hi Judith! Sorry to jump in on your comment, but I saw you had the surgery over 20 years ago. Would you mind sharing how many levels and if you’ve had problems since? My uncle had this surgery about 20 years ago (3 levels) and hasn’t had any issues since. I’m wondering if positive outcomes are more common than we realize bc we just don’t hear about them! Hope you’re thriving! :)
Thank you for sharing!! I am 5 days post-op from ACDF surgery, c5-7. I am having a lot of nerve pain after surgery in right shoulder blade & arm with numbness in my fingertips. I am hoping it gets better. I'm on a steroid dose pack. Your video has been really helpful.
Pam I am sorry you are still having nerve pain. I wonder if things are a bit swollen still and touching nerves. I will be thinking of you and praying for full healing. Thank you for sharing! Let me know how things progress!
God bless you dear and I also went through ACDF surgery on July 2020and my C6 -C7 was fused. I am much better now and I will see my Neurosurgeon for 1 final visit in July he will do an X-ray just to make sure everything is fine.
I’m having ACDF SURGERY ON C5, C6, and C7 and I can’t wait to be pain free. Everyone I’ve seen on here so many appointments before their surgery and I’ve only had my blood work and EKG.
Perhaps your doctor and you have met and the surgery is a go, and you only need those preparations. After the doctor scheduled mine, I had the same tests as you mentioned. I will be thinking of you and sending good vibes! Come back and let me know how you are doing after the surgery! Be well!
Very informative. I found put about my 2 herniated disks back in 2019. Have yet to get the surgery. But im pushing for it more this year. Pain comes and goes but I need to get it. Thanks so much for sharing
Thank you for sharing your story! One of the ladies I work with talks about the pain from her shoulders and down her arm, She does not get the tingling though! When she gets to hurting; she tends to get migraines and feel sick to her stomach. I know I have degenerative disc disease in my lower back. I had several back injuries before they discovered it. There are days after work that I can barely stand straight up. I love my tens unit.
Thanks! I injured my back several times. The pain dr said it is what it is and you have to learn to deal with it and set your limits. My youngest brother has it too but he has had 5 back surgeries. He lives in Alaska but says the cold is really getting to him so he wants to move to warmer climate.
@@dancnluc1 Oh my gosh! You know discs wearing out must run in families! My older bro had the same surgery as me, but he was in an accident. I will be keeping your bro in my prayers, too!
My youngest brother was in an accident when he started to have problems. Thank you for your prayers. Sorry to hear that your brother had to go through the same thing. It is abit scary to see it run in the family.
Soooo happy you did so well. Was this diskectomy without any fusion? I am trying to figure out if you had to do fusions. I see a neurosurgeon on Fri at 4pm. I am so scared.
I wish you well on Friday! Ask your questions and listen to the doctor. I had to have 3 vertebrae fused. The discs were completely removed and there are metal cages placed between my vertebrae. A plate and 6 screws holds it all together. Here I am 4 years later... I have some aches especially because I overuse my neck... I mean I move my head back and forth farther than it wants to go and make my muscles and parts sore. Perhaps when I am done teaching I won't be as sore. But I am well. I am not a doctor, but I don't know that you can have a discectomy without a fusion. Perhaps so. Ask. Take care. Be well. Come back and let me know how things go!
Thanks for sharing,I just had mine done 12 days ago...I had 5 discs that had problems, they did the ones causing the most severe pain C5-C6, C6-C7...I came out groggy, once I woke up they put me in a room,a short while later I was fully alert acting like," was there a problem?,did you not do the surgery?",lol...I then ordered a full meal,no restrictions,I inhaled it,lol...that night it hit me,got the meds flowing and the next morning I was out of it,they came in,checked me out,let me order breakfast and lunch and then I'd be let loose if I felt ok...I left the hospital,I had severe pain but was up and doing things, I went out shopping a few times but no walking around town yet...for the first 7 days I had severe pain, but like I said I was getting things done,lol...on day 8 I got out and started walking,2 miles, then 2.5,2.5,3 and then yesterday 6 miles at a record 4.5 mph walking pace..I have my 2 week post op appointment on Tuesday, can't wait...I also want to note that I do not wear a brace, not once,no diet restrictions, only one is don't lift 10 lbs...I do some arts and crafts and overall feel great...we will know more as the months go on and look forward to a greater tomorrow as the past 6 months I was basically bed ridden half the time...the incision at 12 days looks like it will be barely visible in a month??..hope your doing well and for those looking to get it,don't wait, this does not go away without surgery...take care.
Thank you for sharing your story, Stephen! I am glad you are doing well! I have a follow up video where I do show my scar. It is there, but hidden mostly in my natural neck lines. You are so right, if you need the surgery, get the surgery! Life is so much better now! Take care!
@Lady……sorry to hear that….I am 16 weeks out now, barely see scar….I was back on my road bike 2 weeks post op, it hurt but it was shocking to many as most are still in bed wearing a collar, etc….I was fortunate I had an amazing Doctor and staff and my physical conditioning prior, healthy diet, non smoker,no drinking, etc….I am in amazing shape as I type this, I started working out 2 weeks ago, lost 20 lbs, gained a lot of muscle, absolutely no pain due to surgery, ….so very blessed, this has given me new life.
Having C5-C6 possibly C6-C7 on Friday. This is going on 11 months with pain and numbness. Was constantly told to do physical therapy and try new excercises! Nothing worked, steroids had no effect. Finally they decided to give an MRI and called me right away the next morning and told needed surgery right away, MRI was Monday, why do they wait so long, no idea, hoping for good results, would be nice to actually sleep a full night for first time in a year.
@@theplanninggirl hey! Surgery went well, they only did C5-C6. He was thinking of doing C6 - C7 and totally removing the C6 bone but thankfully was able to get disc and bone Spurs without taking the bone. Could tell right away, nerve pain in neck, shoulder, and back of arm gone! Thank God! Still some mild tingling in forearm and thumb and pointer finger, but I’ll take that all day. Could also be carpal Tunnel, I’m left handed so it not even a big deal to be in the right. Just taking my meds and trying to relax, going on short walks. You are welcome. The collar while you sleep, was not an issue for me. Also, in the beginning, I did try to sleep in a reclining chair, but found bed was more comfortable! I wish you well, Mohamad! Let me know how it goes!
Thank you for sharing! I'm so glad you aren't in pain anymore. My husband has a slipped disc or whatever the diagnosis is in his lower back. He is choosing not to have surgery right now because he has a few more states he wants to run a marathon in to hit his 50 states goal. I may see if he wants to watch your video. I think part of him is scared of being paralyzed, I don't know. I'm glad this is over for you (the worst anyway). lol Take care my friend!
I have seen others refer to it as ACDF, though my doctor did not call it that. I was referred to a neurosurgeon by my doctor. I wish you the best of luck with your surgery! Come back and let me know how you do!

@@theplanninggirl yes I will just wondering I hope it is ok to ask this question about the surgery. Is it difficult after the surgery to use the bathroom I wondered what it is like can you reach down to perform tasks in that regard ok or hard with neck brace on just wanting to pre-plan any extra personal cares support I need at home to assist me with that task.
@@justinahammond8529 Justina, I did not have troubles in the bathroom. It is tricky for me to reach behind me as my lower spine is compromised, but that had nothing to do with my neck surgery. I will admit, I don't see my torso well, so if I drop crumbs on my chest, I can't see it, so I use a mirror to see myself. I have troubles seeing my lap and again, when in the bathroom grooming, I use a hand mirror to trim hair. I don't think I always get things tidy in perfect order, but hubby does not seem to worry about symmetry!
Two years of moderate/mild radicular symptoms such as yours and nothing has completely stopped or alleviated the pain/discomfort. My next step is trigger point injections and then possibly botox. That will be the end of the line and the length of my patience with chronic pain. Thanks for making this video. 💚I have put off even contemplating this surgery. 💙
Nolan, what does the doctor say? You should not have to live with pain. If the Botox does not work, you should think about the surgery if your doctor recommends. I honestly do not regret it. I rather wish I could have it in my lower back too just to take away the discomfort I have there. Perhaps some day it will be necessary. Take care of yourself, and come back and let me know how things are going. I am sending good vibes and prayers for healing.
@@theplanninggirl Well the doctors unfortunately have not been the most helpful. I was informed via an urgent care APN that I should have seen a Neurologist since the beginning. So that's the referral I have now and waiting on an appointment. Then the neurologist can hopefully give me a diagnostic of what I'm looking at. This intermittent cycle that appears never ending can make you loose your mind. Trying those trigger point injections first to see if muscle knots are the cause or if it is directly coming from the site of the bilateral bulging disc at C5 C6 area. Hopefully this will give me an indication where the problem potential lies before I see or after I see the neurologist. Did you ever think it was getting better but every time it was you were or nearly back to square one? It's like it tricks you into thinking it will fully heal on its own.
@@nrp5791 No, Nolan, I never felt I was getting better. Well, that is not true, I guess. I only had nerve pain down my left arm and shoulder blade on the left side and while doing physical therapy, I started to either get used to it or feel like maybe it was helping. At one point I was wondering if I was getting better, I recall. We had paid for a week at the beach and so we went, despite the pain. While there, I was thinking maybe truly resting, I'd get better. But by the time I was home and finally got the MRI, I found out that was not the case. I am glad you are going to see a neurologist. He/She will help! You are right, the pain can make you lose your mind. I had dark, dark thoughts many a time while pacing the house in the middle of the night because I just could not rest. Please hang in there. The neurologist is key! When is your appointment? Thinking of you and sending strength and comfort to endure until you get this solved. Take care, and come back and let me know how it goes.
@@gimpee8113 I have done acupuncture which went nowhere. No help at all really. It's a disc issues in the lower part of my cervical column possibly with osteophytes (bone spurs). I'm contemplating surgery all the time and I get better than I don't. Like being of two minds all the time. What has helped me lately to feel better more often is doing a neck exercise for strengthening by Stuart McGill whom authored the book called the Back Mechanic. He has an excerpt on the neck for stability. I'm also taking gabapentin and Baclofen and getting as much sleep as I can. So far the pain and discomfort is much less but unfortunately still chronic. See how the Stuart McGill exercise works for you if you have similar issues.
I may be going under the knife. I went to Spinal Institute where I live and they said my spine is being crushed and I have damage in C3, C4, C5, C6, and C7. I started having problems a month ago with a pinched nerve and now I have no feeling in part of my arms and my hands feel cramped and hurting all the time. They told me that alternative treatments are too late and right to surgical consult. I have been looking at all these videos to see what they can do. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis which is why my disc is degenerating.
Joseph, I am sorry to hear of your pain and troubles, but must say you should definitely take your doctor's advice and have the surgery. I am now at nearly 10 weeks out and my collar is loosened while I am sitting on the couch and I feel fabulous. I plan to go back to work on Nov. 2. I see my doc again Nov.19 and expect to not need the collar/brace anymore at that time. I will pray for your healing. Come back and let me know what happens and how you are doing. Excellent video. I watched your video because my sister will be having the anterior cervical discectomy and fusion next week. She is in excruciating pain and am trusting in the Lord that the operation will be a success and for the pain to be gone. Did the Dr recommend a certain pillow for you after surgery and to continue using throughout? How difficult was it for you to get dressed - putting on a dress, blouse , jacket, etc.? If there are any other tips, please let me know. Thank you.
Wow, thank you for making this! How are you feeling now after more time has passed? I’m also a teacher and have been so scared about having this done. I’ve basically been told I need surgery for c4-c7. I just want to make sure I can comfortably do my job as I’m sure you wanted! There’s so much movement and bending with teaching! I was supposed to have surgery a week ago but postponed it to get a couple more opinions. Seeing how well you were doing so soon after has given me hope!!
I am glad the video was helpful, Kelly! As far as doing my job, it was awkward in the classroom, especially when we were masked and desks were in rows, to watch my feet because I cannot look directly down anymore. But, now that I can rearrange things better and have more space I am fine. I do get tired from checking papers on desks and looking down all day, but I do okay. I use a pillow to help support my arms when reading and using a laptop at home. At school, I rest my elbow on a desk and sit while we read. I leave my heavy textbooks on a podium and walk about empty handed more than I used to. The kids have adapted well to help decorate the higher places. I teach teens, so they are willing to help and are able to help. Good luck with your surgery! Come back and tell me how you are doing!
@@theplanninggirl unfortunately hit a snag I have a hard swelling under the surgical sight. The swelling is causing me to have to drains put in and more time at hospital. I'm so upset.
Well done Gail. I wonder if your surgeon would like to be able to refer his/her patients to watch your video if they would like to, for a patient perspective, prior to the surgery.
Hy, i am also suffering from herniated disc at c4-c5, and c6-c7 level. I could not move my neck properly, tingling and pain goes to my fingers and arms..and anxiety like symptoms . I am very scared
I enjoyed our chat today on Instagram, Zahid and am sending you prayers and good healing vibes. Come back and let me know how you are doing and if the doctor schedules surgery!
I am sorry to say I do not know. I no longer have this brace. It was issued to me by the surgeon. I do know it was made overseas. Norway or some such place I think. I am sorry that likely does not help. Thinking of you and sending positive vibes that you have a good surgery and heal well!
Question: I go in Sept 2nd for the same surgery been dealing with it since aug 2017 and finally got approved for surgery had to have lots therapies, injections on arms, shoulders, back medication trials had to prove soo much first to be considered but, god is good.. times years have been a nightmare ready to get it all done I just pray all comes out well .. the paralyzing meds through the IV when you woke, Could you feel your body then? Get well soon love.. thank you for ur video very informative helped me understand somewhat of what I'm facing next.
I am glad the video helped. When I woke up it was like waking up from a nap or sleeping at night. I was perfectly fine and able to move. My brain felt a bit fuzzy from the meds, but that wore off as I was up and drinking water and had dinner and moved about! Good luck Sept 2 and come back and let me know how you are doing!
Hi Sherie! Best of luck with your surgery! I will be thinking of you! I was off for 9 weeks, but be mindful, I work as a teacher in a middle school and there is always concern for being bumped or knocked over! I still get run over by the kids! LOL! I am always telling them to be careful! Anyway, come back and tell me how things are! Sending good healing vibes!
Hi I have sugery 3 weeks ago for a spine cord but located on the back of my head until the hump very painful but doctor doesn’t give any of those collars.
I’m felling much better thank you 🙏 Still on medication and still swollen and sores. I wish I have like you got here very hard to find for shower and ather one. I’m live in London. Where did you get those. Thanks for replying hope you are well now
Hi. Glad your operation went well & the awful pain gone. How did you sleep? With a special pillow? How was it recommended to sleep? On your back? Side? How difficult was it getting dressed? Thank you. I greatly appreciate your response.
Thank you! I slept the first night or two in the recliner, tipped back a bit. I was definitely more comfortable in bed after that! I am a side sleeper and it was absolutely fine until about week 6 or 7 perhaps, when I felt like the brace was not needed anymore. My doctor had me wear it for 9 weeks. I was definitely ready for it to be off! Of course, I had tired muscles once it did come off! As far as getting dressed, I was fine. I don't recall having issues. The weather was fair so I generally word a tshirt. I did have troubles bending forward to start so no socks or shoes, though I wasn't allowed out for the first 2 weeks, so not an issue. I had done all this stuff to prep and none was necessary! My arms and body worked just fine!
@@theplanninggirl Thank you for your response. My sister’s surgery is this coming Thursday. She is 65, diabetic & with arthritis. Her neurosurgeon wants her to have the neck brace on for 3 months. I am praying much for a successful operation & recuperation. May you be blessed with good health.
@@bets8483 Thank you! I pray for a successful operation and recuperation for your sister as well. I expect she will fee so much better after the surgery! I am glad she has you to watch out for her! Come back and let me know how she is doing!
Thanks for the information that you provided and the ease my mind I am having the surgery actually next Friday question though your neck brace did they provide that or did you yourself get it? And what is your score looking like now after a year because seven years ago I had a thyroidectomy and the doctor was excellent you can never even tell that I had a incision there
You are very welcome, Vinnie! Good luck on your surgery on Friday! Come back and let me know how it goes! In one of my pre-op appointments, I was fitted for the neck brace. At the hospital after the surgery I was given the shower collar. My scar looks fine. The doctor was able to make the incision along the natural folds of my neck. I can see it and I suppose others can too, but it blends in pretty well.
Hello from Chile, South America, I’m listening your experience. I have to get C5-C6. I have 6 surgeries, 3 in mi legs, 1 on the foot, other un my shoulder, and the last one, on my stomach so I know the procedures on a surgery, but this surgery its more dangerous, if I would like to ask you a lot of questions, like how did you sleep (positions) at the beginnings? and how did you moved around, for how long you need to use? 24/7 for how long? I hope yoy can help me. Greetings and thanks you very much Juan Ignacio
Juan, I am sorry to hear you have had to have so many surgeries! I am glad my video helped alleviate some of your concerns for your neck surgery. The night I spent in the hospital, I did elevate the top/head of the bed and slept fine. When I got home, I was afraid to lay in bed and tried sleeping in a recliner. That was not the most comfortable. I did end up lying in bed and I was fine. I think we fear things and should trust ourselves and try. So, I slept fine in bed after the second night. My doctor had me wear the collar 24/7 for 9 weeks, but I will admit at about 6 weeks, I started to undo it when I was sitting still watching TV or UA-cam videos. Then, I gradually wore it less, such as when I got out of the shower, before dressing for example. At about 9 weeks, I went back to work and I wore it for a few days until I felt comfortable and stopped wearing it one day, and was fine. Good luck and come back and let me know how you are doing!
Glad it went well with you. I love it when you were thankful to God because he is the reason why....Hallelujah! I'm getting my surgery next week. Going in tommorow for pre-op, to get bloodwork, ect. They said I'll be there for about 45 minutes. I'm thinking they go over the basics & tell me what to expect. I'm wondering...will they tell me to take off my nail polish. I get my nails dipped in the powder. I know some surgeries require that because they look at the color of your nails sometimes to gage your oxygen. Do you remember if they told you not to wear nail polish?
I also wear dip polish at times, and yes, I had to have my polish off. It is because of the oxygen thingy they put on your finger; just as you stated! Also, Gail, I love your name and how you spell it! LOL! I also spell my name the same way! Thank you for commenting and I will be thinking of you. Let me know how things go! Take care!
How long will my swallowing be affected? I had it last Friday a week ago. I'm better but my throat has phlegm in it and feels like it's clamping down sometimes especially at night. I have a little anxiety which is making it worse. I am drinking lot's of water. Any suggestions? When will my throat feel normal? My levels were 3-4, and 4-5. They used dura bond on my scar. It is swelled or thick from reaction or stitches underneath which may be pressing on my throat. Was your scar thick or you feel a hard lump along your scar?
Jeffrey, if you are concerned, talk to your doctor. I do recall feeling like I was having trouble swallowing and there are times when I still do; such as when my head is turned or if I am looking up or down. Holding my head in a neutral, comfortable position helps. I keep myself calm because I do a little check and tell myself yes I can swallow and yes I can breathe. I no longer take a hard multivitamin, but a gummie vitamin as I cannot swallow the Centrums anymore. My scar is hard feeling underneath and I don't like anything to touch it. I am careful with shirt necklines. As I have aged, my neck skin is getting older and my scar also has an indentation at times. It's weird. For the most part it just looks like my neck. If you check my Instagram picture, though, you can see my neck fairly well and it looks normal. I wish you a speedy recovery!
Yes! As soon as I woke from surgery I was pain free! I have remained so for the past 2 years! I am uncertain about side effects, but because my neck is fused in the location it is fused in, I have a slight limited mobility to turn from side to side, as well as up and down. It does not limit me in any way. I have to look in a mirror sometimes to check my torso, for example to see if I spilled something on myself when I am clutzy, but that is a small concession compared to the pain and the complete loss of mobility I was facing. If you are unwell and need to have the surgery, come on back and let me know how you fair. Take care!
Hi thanks for sharing your story I hope ur feeling well..... Have you done any pre surgery test ? Like the covid-19 test? I'm scheduled for it in a few days but my surgery not yet...... thank you
Just before my surgery there were lots of tests, including a chest xray, ekg, lots of blood work, a nasal swab for staph, I believe. I did not have a covid test that I am aware of, everything was painless. Keep me updated! I would like to hear how you are doing.

Thanks for all your help. Did you consider disc replacement? Are you concerned about adjacent level disease? How many levels did you have fused? I’m a teacher too and love in NJ. I’m very scared and would love to talk sometime. I’m taking this hard. I’m a single mom and live in Summit. I also have knee pain due to injury. I also need a shoulder scope. I’d love to fill you in about how all this happened. Lmk if I can reach out. ~ Michelle
Michelle, I never heard back from you and am thinking about you and wondering how you are. If you get this message, I would love to know how you are feeling.
Hey Michelle, I just wanted to say you’re not alone. I’m also a teacher (and single mom and very active… love running!). I’ve been out of work so far this year as I look for a surgeon and get opinions. Like you, I’ve been taking it VERY hard. I find people’s reactions don’t help. I wanted to share that my uncle had 3 levels fused 20 years ago and has had NO issues since. I think about him when I start to go to a dark place. I hope this gives you some comfort.
Thank you so much for this. I am due to have the exact same surgery at the same levels within the next eight weeks. I'm a little apprehensive but you have really helped put my mind at rest. A question: did you, prior to the surgery have nerve pain in your shoulder blades top and bottom, as if they were being pulled downwards by any chance? This is my main symptom.
My pain was mainly in my left side. It started at the top of my left bottom side of my neck and radiated across to my left shoulder and down my left arm. Also down my back via past the soft space to the right of my left shoulder blade to the spine. It was absolute hell. I am so fine now, honestly. I plan to do a follow up video in the next couple of days as it has been six months and I am mostly ME! Let me know how things go, Back on the Bayou! I will be thinking of you!
@@theplanninggirl Ah...thank you. I have bilateral foraminal stenosis and some instability at C4/C5 so this may be why some of our symptoms have been different, as in mine is on both sides, though more on the right, dominant side (would be, wouldn't it? lol) It IS absolute hell - nerve pain is the worst and you can't describe it to someone who has never had it, it's like nothing else. Mine goes far down the spine too and initiaily I wondered if I had two lots of issues, some in the cervical and some in the thoracic but the MRI showed just cervical. Anyway, thanks so much again. This is gonna be my "go to" to watch (proabbly on repeat, lol) the night before surgery. I am so glad you are doing so well now. Would love to see a follow up and i think others would benefit very much as so many of the ACDF videos on here are quite negative and concerning, especially at multi levels (not that there are hundreds, but the ones on here are mostly rather dismal after week one and that was skeeering me. Just so happy for you. Thanks again and I will definitely let you know how I get on when my time comes :)
Yes, I do. I am just now getting feeling back in the left hand, and I do get all three: pain, tingling and numbness in my left arm and down along the nerve. Sometimes in my low back from my original injury and my neck aches. But it is a muscle tiredness I think. My back aches too, but that is from the degenerative disc disorder. I hope you are well and don't need to have this surgery. But, if you do, and the doctor recommends it; I'd say do it! My life is way better now than it was when I was in pain. I don't think I could have lived with that pain. I also know by now I would likely have lost my mobility. I still work and "play." I pick up my granddaughter and carry her. Life is good. Take care!
Wow I am 50 having the same nerve pain you are taking about started PT , going neurosurgeon sometime soon did your nerve pain stop and are you able to sleep after surgery because if it does not fix that what is the point.
Yes, cycloneyou, I slept just fine after the surgery! I no longer have nerve pain and the surgery was a great success for me! Come back and let me know how you are doing!
Thank you for sharing your surgery story! I’m very glad you are doing so well and your pain is gone. My discs are narrowing (5, 6, 7) and are very close to my spine. I am very cautious about lifting, my posture, etc so I don’t aggravate my neck. Like you I store my stress in my left shoulder area and that is where my pain began then down my arm to my thumb. PT gave me relief and so for the past 4-5 years have been able to function ok. I was a secretary until I retired last year and sitting in front of typewriter/computer was a contributing factor to my problem. I’m hoping surgery is not part of my future but if it is your Video was very helpful. Thanks again for sharing!
Jeez, Diana! I am sorry to hear you have similar issues. I know we do need to be cautious of our posture and reaching. It is so strange that some little thing can just wear us out, huh? I am keeping you on my prayer list for staying healthy! Take care!
Hi Donna! I am sorry you had an accident! I do not have troubles swallowing. The day of the surgery, I age regular dinner! I do notice I am not as loud or able to project my voice as much now, but I've also used it less since we were on lockdown and I taught virtually too. There is a slight difference in feeling inside, but honestly it is barely noticeable and does not take away from eating or drinking in any way.
Wow poor lady.. I know how it is. ..I have been deal with neck pain for years after neck fusion.. it takes so long.. while your in pain.. it is in human
Jim, I am fabulous now! I hope you get some relief. I am sorry to hear you have neck pain still post fusion. Yes, I do get some creaks and groans and aches like anyone else, I think, but nothing like the constant pain I had before surgery. How are you?
I’m having this surgery next Friday 8/26/22. I just found out how bad my neck was yesterday. My dr got my MRI results and wanted to schedule this immediately. He is the same dr that did my spinal fusion a year and a half ago. My spinal fusion was from L2-S1. I am very anxious about doing my neck. I do have lots of pain in both arms and numbness and tingling in both hands. So my question is how are you doing 2 yrs after? How long did you have to wear your collar? And did you have much difficulty swallowing after the surgery? I hear that is a big complaint. Thank you for your video. It is very informative!
Thank you for watching and sharing your information! I wish you the best of luck next Friday! I will be thinking of you! I am well. I was told to wear the collar 24/7 until about week 6 when the doctor said I could open it or remove it when sitting still, such as watching TV. I did that. As I did so, I'd get braver and leave it off while I got dressed for example. By week 9, I was done and tossed it out. The velcro straps were super worn by that time. I had no troubles at all swallowing and had a regular dinner right after the surgery: turkey meat, green beans, potatoes. I did not have troubles at home either. I will say that my voice does not project as well as it once did. I cannot call out across the gym or the outdoor field when I am at school. My regular speaking voice is fine, I just cannot yell out anymore. Swallowing is slightly different. It is not inhibited. I would not have fears. But you will notice it is different. Not painful, not scary, not uncomfortable. But you will notice it is different. Come back and let me know how you are doing! Take care!
@@theplanninggirl thank you for your input! It means a lot! It’s a pretty scary operation especially since I don’t feel 100 percent healed from my back, you give me lots of hope and confidence that this should improve my quality of life! It’s good to hear you were able to eat not long after the surgery. What does your range of motion look like now? I’m sure there are some limitations I will check in and let you know how I am doing as soon as I’m able! I sincerely appreciate your well wishes!!
@@7loug My range of motion is not the same. I cannot turn my head to look over my shoulders. Because my surgeon is right handed, the plate and screws were placed on the right, so turning to the left is more limited than turning to the right. I rarely notice it. I do not do well looking up or tipping down as I still get dizzy. I had a prior inner ear condition that is exacerbated by the difference in mobility. Honestly, I do just about everything I have always done. Good luck Friday! I am sending good healing vibes your way!
When the neck collar came off is when I started testing out my neck. Maybe 7 weeks or so? I was allowed to loosen the collar and I'd try not to move my neck because you are not supposed to. But when the collar came off I moved as naturally as I could. I was very aware I was moving my neck. The screws and plates are solid enough by the time you are allowed to take off the brace, but permanent at one year. I move my head all over the place now, and sometimes a bit too far and get a little click from muscles and scar tissue I guess. No pain though!
I had hoped to have artificial discs injected. That was not an option for me as my bones collapsed and bent my spine. It was compromised and dangerous for my future mobility. Three discs are fused. I feel totally normal. I have a small scar on my neck that is within the natural folds of my neck and am totally me! DM me on Instagram. I am telling you, Michelle, it was the best thing for me and all is well, honest! :)
Ray, I feel like myself! I have for quite some time now. It has been just over a year and I do all the things I have always done. I was never a bungee jumper, so that is not a problem, but all my usual activities are back! I am so glad I had the surgery! I wish you well! Come back and let me know how things go!
How long were u on ur pain meds ? I’m happy u had a smooth recovery I’m gonna be having this surgery at the end of January 2021. Thank u for ur video it helps with me being nervous
I will be thinking of you, Alicia and wish you all the best. I took the prescription pain pill the first night I was home and not again. I don't usually even take a Tylenol, so it was a bit too much for me. I did not have any pain, so no need for meds! I hope the same is for you!
I washed my hair the morning of the surgery and was not allowed to for three days, if I recall, after surgery. I wore my shower collar. I also cut my hair to chin length before surgery thinking it would be easier.
I am fine. I started using a regular pillow in recent months and it took a bit of getting used to. I had an unrelated major surgery in late December which kept me on the operating table for over 5 hours, so the numbness and tingling in my left hand started up again. It is clearing up now, 5 months later. I would say the surgery is a success! What about you? Are you here due to needing a surgery?
I'm suffering for 2 years ,I've disc harniation in C5-6-7.I have bearable pain but loosing strenght on my hands, have tingling sensation on my fingers and I'm loosing weight and greeting week. I visited neurosurgeon yesterday but he is saying neurologically he is not seeing any sign for surgery. But I had no normal life actually.
@@theplanninggirl Gail, please do a 2 year follow-up ACDF video so we can see and hear the nuances of a longer term recovery. I just had my procedure 5 weeks ago but the details that you've share have really helped me know what to expect.
Beth I recall my neck muscles were a bit sore and so were my shoulder and upper back. I think that lessened as the days went by. Talk to your doctor and see what he says. Let me know how you make progress! Take care!
I understand you are not a doctor but, when I sit at my planning desk for hours on end, my back has very very sharp pain. Almost like something is stabbing you. What do you think that is?
I don't know, but would say you need to talk to your doctor! I no longer hold the same position for more than an hour. I won't sit on a hard chair for more than 15-20 minutes either, unless I sit on a cushion that has the back cut out so that my tailbone does not take the pressure of my weight. Riley you really should consult with your doctor! Let me know how things turn out!
I’m having this done a Thursday this week. I’m coming home afterwards and wasn’t told to stop taking vitamins or anything except Motrin. I’m ready but just concerned about coming home right afterwards

It absolutely is crazy what insurance makes you go through. I wish you well. Come back and let me know how you are doing!
I have watched many UA-cam videos of ACDF surgery and yours is by far, the most comprehensive and helpful! Your description of your pain prior to surgery matches my pain to a T. I loved your video. Praise God for healing. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Yes! I am always grateful that God is here to help us get through tough times!

Thank you so much. And yes, I'm trusting the Lord and have many people praying for me. Your video has helped me tremendously. God bless you.
God bless.

I am so glad you are well. Thank you for sharing!
Which surgery it was actually , ACDF or disk replacement . How are you so far.
My sister had her surgery today. She awoke in still excruciating pain. The Dr said, “She cleaned as best she could. Not to panic, that it could take a couple of weeks for the pain to go away. I am so sad & feel for her. I pray some miracle for her to be well. Please pray for her too. Thank you.
I am so sorry she is still in pain, Bets! I shall be praying! Come back and let me know how she is feeling in a few days!

Thanks be to God all powerful & glorious! God bless
@@bets8483 I am so glad! Thank you for letting me know!

How did you do? I know this is 3 yrs ago and am so curious. I am facing this next
Thanks for sharing, Jeffrey!

I am very fidgety and I have this disease at 40. It was in my case due to stress, my bad sight (needing to move my head forward to see well the screen), lifting heavy shopping, all those things together.

You are welcome to DM me on IG or email me if you wish to chat further. Take care!
Just had mine c3 to 6. My hands are not bumb anymore. Recovery is a little first day or so. But doing better every day

What brand is your neck brace? I’m having C2 to C6 fusion rods and screws.

Greetings and thanks you very much
Juan Ignacio

Hi, mdm. I wanna know if u are painfree after doing the surgery? Does the surgery have any side effects?

I’ve been out of work so far this year as I look for a surgeon and get opinions. Like you, I’ve been taking it VERY hard. I find people’s reactions don’t help. Thank You!! ❤️❤️❤️

After 3 years, do you get any pain, tingling or numbness in your neck, back, arm, or hand ?

I’m thinking if getting this surgery. I was rear ended! I’m concerned about having trouble swallowing after. Did you have any problems with that?
Thank you so much for this info. I am having similar surgery in three weeks. How long did it take before you could move your neck in a rotation?
When the neck collar came off is when I started testing out my neck. Maybe 7 weeks or so? I was allowed to loosen the collar and I'd try not to move my neck because you are not supposed to. But when the collar came off I moved as naturally as I could. I was very aware I was moving my neck. The screws and plates are solid enough by the time you are allowed to take off the brace, but permanent at one year. I move my head all over the place now, and sometimes a bit too far and get a little click from muscles and scar tissue I guess. No pain though!
Also, Carol, good luck on your surgery! Come back and let me know how it goes!
Thanks again for sharing How many of your discs were fused? Did you research and consider having artificial discs instead?
I had hoped to have artificial discs injected. That was not an option for me as my bones collapsed and bent my spine. It was compromised and dangerous for my future mobility. Three discs are fused. I feel totally normal. I have a small scar on my neck that is within the natural folds of my neck and am totally me! DM me on Instagram. I am telling you, Michelle, it was the best thing for me and all is well, honest! :)
