I had C3-C7 (four level) ACDF 7 weeks ago. Every person's recovery is different. I was expecting a much harder recovery based on all of the videos out there like this one, but I was walking (in the hospital corridor) the afternoon of surgery, and was walking miles per day within a few days after surgery. The surgeon I used insists on a hard cervical collar for the first 6 weeks. This week I met with him and both the collar and all restrictons from activity were removed. My point: not every ACDF surgery recovery is as difficult as many of the videos on youtube would have you think.
I'll have my 4 level ACDF in January, I've had 2 single levels done before & the recovery was easy, I just can't imagine this 4 level being as easy, we'll see 🤞🤞🙏
@@michelelisa1420 I've lost about 20%, but it does not hinder me. The only time I notice it is when needing to look behind me when driving - changing lanes or backing out of a parking spot. I'm very active now, playing pickleball daily (usually 1.5 - 2.5 hours) and also take a yoga class once or twice a week. I was never not able to brush my teeth or tie my shoes, even right after surgery I was able to do that. I will post a video soon comparing before/after range of motion. I took video of my range of motion the day prior to surgery.
Thank you so much for this. I have so much anxiety leading up to it, my surgery is 9/11/23 and I've been researching. Most of what I hear is negative so I love finding the upbeat and positive sides. ❤🙏
It's very worrying isn't it! I find out when for mine on 19.10.23. Just looking forward to using my arm and hand, having feeling back, and this "nerve root" being released! It's GOT to be better than what I've got now! Good luck Heather. X

I had mine 1 week ago and still have slight numbness in my 2 fingers. I'm not sure if my arm is weak or not because of the restrictions. Anyways, has your minor problems like this gone away?

I had the same surgery back in 2019 due to 2 of my disc collapsed. Recovery wasn’t to bad and I don’t have any more pain in my neck. Wish you a speedy recovery!
Thank you very much for making a post surgery video as it’s a insight into a very worrying procedure for people like myself as I’m in for the same surgery in 2 weeks time. Hope your doing well now many thanks
I am 3 weeks in recovery process of ACDF. Was in hospital for a week, had C3 THRU C7 done. My recovery is going well, in a medium soft collar, but still having swallowing problems, muscle spasms of my neck and is excruciating, especially in my shoulders. I had to have two incisions in my throat due to Insertion of filter fio blood clotting which is an issue in any surgery I may have. My talking, voice box, is coming back but right now it is sort of straining for me to talk. Otherwise I am taking my time about this bz i had a bulging disc as well. Right now, my dr advised me to not do too much, definitely no lifting, no exercise yet, walk around your house. Keep the area clean, still have stitches in both places(the throat)! My appetite goes and come. I find myself wanting very smooth portions of mash potatoes, apple sauce, ICE(Italian), smoothies(not too much citrus), Stouffers meatloaf/mashed potatoes. Just real mellow stuff until my throat is better. Thank you for sharing your experience with all of us. I am quite sure that all of us have experience some things from this surgery. I even had a recliner delivered to be put in my bedroom. It is so helpful. I never liked recliners, but I love them now!

Good luck. I’m meeting with my surgeon today to hopefully set a date for surgery. Battling this for 10 years and I’m exhausted physically/mentally/emotionally. Feels like the gamble of a lifetime but I know I can’t live like this anymore. Again, good luck!
Thank you for posting. I'm set to have the surgery next month and I'm absolutely terrified. This sounds much better than the things I've been hearing about recovery time.
Originally they were going to do it mid to late September but now they're doing it October 11th. I can keep you posted. Thanks for checking in on me. They're going to be taking C4-C5, C5-C6.
@firas10100 It went great. I ended up having it on December 6th, 2023. Healed up really well. Was able to speak as soon as I woke up, eating solid foods by that night. Best of all, no nerve pain! Surgery pain was rough for awhile (though nowhere near as bad as the nerve pain), but mostly it was just getting used to wearing my hard collar for 3 months. It wasn't an easy road, but surgery was 100% worth it. I appreciate you checking on me. Hope all is well.

I have a trachea so a ear nose and throat doctor has to get my spine specialist to my spine , I have so much scar tissue already , and I have had two collapsed lungs , so my neurologist already said he will be keeping me 3 days or longer , y' all wish me luck my surgery is tomorrow nov 6 2024 ,
Thank You for the video. I hate to admit it but I am terrified of this surgery. I have had other surgeries but this one just has me afraid for some reason .
I had C5-6/6-7 ACDF done a few weeks ago. Immediate relief from nerve pain. Only issue is occasional numbness and tingling. I expected much worse post-op pain than I ended up with. 3 weeks later almost zero pain.
thank you for sharing, i’ve put my op off for 10 years. i now have a 9 month old and 2.5 year old and it’s time to fix this. i’m scared my kids who need a dad will lose me
If it's absolutely necessary then you can go with it after consultation. The first few months will be challenging depending on how quickly you recover but it's worth it to enjoy more time with your kids. I have a 4 year old and now I can give him more time. I am still recovering though.
Thank you for sharing. Going through the process of finding out what is causing my neck, arm and shoulder pain. Getting 2nd lot of scans done CT, MRI and motion Xray's this week. First lot of scans were not clear (Radiology software compatibility issues). Apparently, radiology department all use different software applications, so if the radiology software cannot talk with the software the Doctor uses to see the images, then the images are difficult to read. So, we will see what happens.
Hi Darish. How have you recovered since your cervical surgery now, please? I'm 11 months postop now, I haven't bounced back as well as I had hoped. I miss my job terribly, but the shooting and fire pains, pins and needles, complete numbness, it's just unmanageable. I try to exercise, as I'm terrified of the "use it or lose it" consequences.. but it just hurts more. I walk as much as I can in minimum reasonable weather. Do you have much pain anymore? If so, how are you managing it? I use TENS machine, physio stretch and medication, but I'd really like to just return to my exercise that I used to do each morning. Are you doing that now?
Iam a 54 female with C5, C6 and C6, C7 due to a traumatic event that almost cost me my life back in 1992 l had to learn how to walk again they told me at the time that my injury's will come back to haunt me later in the future; it could be one month two years five years ten years twenty years it can and will happen. It has happened and by lying down it makes it worse to see point of waking me up out of a dead sleep l thought am l having a heart attack or stroke because l cannot lift my arms. After nerve testing they found that l had severe carpal tunnel in both left and right hands and they postponed my Cervical Stenosis surgery and told me l needed to have the Carpal tunnel surgery first due t on the severely level was at its highest. Why they said it must be done in this order is they said it's all connected. Okay why? They said if they went ahead with CS surgery before the CT surgery they said that there is a high risk for my hands to come out looking like monkey hands. It would cause them to curl up. They are going to go in through the ER front.
thanks to your video it really helped me to go for the surgery .I getting the surgery for C5-6,C6-7 ,C7-T1 on 11/21.Just had one questions as to how many days later were you able to drive
Thank you for your video. I wanted to know how you are feeling now several months later. I’m meeting with a doctor for my procedure, and I am terrified.
Respect. I just had mine am on my first week. C5,c6,c7 I feel better no pain, just lil numbness and weakness still cause I’ve waited for 3 yrs. Now my Question to you any recommendation on what kinna job we have to look for? Cause we have to becarful with dem heavy duties.
First, congratulations on a successful surgery. Next, practice patience and follow the doctor's advice. Once you're ready to resume activities, make sure to do so. For employment, consider something in the tech industry where you can work from home. You can explore our site, jobskillshare.org, if you wish to start a career in IT. Additionally, you can check online videos on how to engage in online selling through platforms like Amazon. While this isn't our area, opportunities are countless if you dedicate your time to it
@@JobskillshareThank you so very much, even though I don’t know anything about IT don’t know if I can do it, I will check the website and maybe I can start learning. It might be hard for me but I’ll try it. Working from home would be nice.
How are you now? 3 months after surgery. I had same surgery c4_c7, 3 weeks ago. Have you still got pain or any other problems? I feel as if this is going to last forever. Please give me some good news. Hope you are doing well
Happy to hear you are doing ok. My mother had the same surgery due to a very bad car accident. She is doing much better now. First 6 months were tough but you will get much better. Was this just a gradual build up over time or was this an injury that just got bad over time?
Bad over time but in 2016 I had a bike accident C4 T5 close fractures so that could have led to it or just my bad tech posture. I am glad your mother is doing well. After therapy I am dealing with some muscle spasm it's not like before but enough to annoy you. I am hopeful it will get better with time. Thanks
@@Jobskillshare It definitely will! The first three months my mother first regretted it, and the doctor kept telling us it's normal. In between the 4-6 month range she felt much much better, and she is happy she got the surgery, she wouldn't go back to the pain she once felt.
Thank you so much. I am at day six. I went through same things. Today however was able to type on my desktop computer and pain gone. But numbness in thumb is still present thank you for sharing. Other than looking like Frankenstein's sister I'm good. I'm 77 yrs old.

Very helpful thank you
you take care, I pray for you
Thank you & Bless you for your time, be well…
I had C5-6/6-7 ACDF done a few weeks ago. Immediate relief from nerve pain. Only issue is occasional numbness and tingling. I expected much worse post-op pain than I ended up with. 3 weeks later almost zero pain.
@@blowfly5936 56, get a 2nd opinion if you are not sure.
I was worried at day 7 that the fingers wouldn't stop tingling numb.
Danish, get well soon
Get well soon bro.
thank you for sharing, i’ve put my op off for 10 years. i now have a 9 month old and 2.5 year old and it’s time to fix this. i’m scared my kids who need a dad will lose me
If it's absolutely necessary then you can go with it after consultation. The first few months will be challenging depending on how quickly you recover but it's worth it to enjoy more time with your kids. I have a 4 year old and now I can give him more time. I am still recovering though.
@@Jobskillshare thank you so much for sharing, i’m glad you’re alive and doing well!
Wishing you a speedy and healthy recovery. God bless!
What was the outcome?
Soon and healthy recovery
glad I saw your video.. I will be having the same surgery coming May 27...
I didn’t experience barely any of the negative things you incurred. Attests to how absolutely different everyone is.
I have the same problem I wonder how did you with carpal tunnel’s surgery if you have time please 🙏 let me learn
Get well soon

Working from home would be nice.
speedy recovery.
May ﷲ grant you shifa
Having this done in a week, kinda terrified but ive made it through brain surgery so hopefully it goes well.
How are you now? 3 months after surgery. I had same surgery c4_c7, 3 weeks ago. Have you still got pain or any other problems? I feel as if this is going to last forever. Please give me some good news. Hope you are doing well
Here is update video ua-cam.com/video/NVS1M3AWcJU/v-deo.html
I'm 77 yrs old.
you definitelly ned a better set up on your mental state. The energy is very low and you will struglle! most of recoveries i have seen are for from your testimony
