62 yo. I'm one week post-op ACDF. C4-C7 fused. Three discs excised, replaced with titanium cage with cadaver bone and other materials put in there. Eight screws, three plates. Feel better than expected. Was kept there three nights. Insurance jacked me around for 2 months over allowing me ONE overnight stay! I was draining a lot through the first two nights. My throat is better than anticipated. Coughing, sneezing and clearing my throat hurt, like having a bad cold, how the chest, back and neck hurt. For the first couple of nights in my own bed, my LOWER back hurt badly. I hurt it thirty years ago, but haven't had problems for over a decade.

I had this exact surgery done about a year ago and everything she is saying is spot on. I was apprehensive about having it done, but I am so glad I did!
As soon as you wake from surgery you'll immediately notice you'll be pain free.
To be honest, worst part of the surgery was the sore throat afterwards when trying to swallow.
I have since fully recovered with no issues. Having the surgery was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I’m a month out from this surgery. Wish I would have watched this before having it done. I was so nervous to have it done, but it was literally a walk in the park. The sore throat was awful, but the surgery was nothing. I took Tylenol for pain for about 3 days and that was it. The hardest part of the whole thing is learning to relax and not overdo things. My incision is only about 3” long. To hear you say you had staples was the only thing that was different from my surgery. This is a great informative video and everything you said is spot on. Thanks for sharing this!

I’m out of ACDF surgery, two weeks today. I watched your videos, to prepare myself, and found them to be very reassuring. I’m 70, and had right shoulder surgery, in January. Instead of the pain going away, it got a lot worse. My new complaints sounded more cervical, so my orthopedic surgeon sent me for an MRI of my neck. He glanced at it and said, “You need a neurosurgeon.” I picked Dr. Peter Shedden and am thrilled to hear that he’s your surgeon, as well.

My surgeon made me wear a cervical collar for six weeks, and then I wore a bone stimulator 4 hours a day for another 3 months. My surgery was 7/15/20, and he released me in January. I had great results, but I did everything he asked me to do, too. I am completely back to normal (better than the normal I had accepted before the surgery). It’s a scary surgery to think about, and I was terrified I would wake up paralyzed, but I’m so glad I did it.

This is the first positive video I've seen regarding this surgery. After receiving my MRI results, I'm meeting with a neurosurgeon to discuss surgery for acdf C5-C6, C6-C7 with nerve root impingements bilaterally in C6 and C7. Same as you mentioned, they'll need to remove bone spurs. They need to widen my spinal canal since it's only 7 mm and I have flattening in my spine so it's putting pressure on my spinal cord. I'm extremely nervous about the surgery but also because I'm used to working out 5 days a week and when I can't it's very difficult. I hope my recovery goes as well as yours, and thank you for posting all of the updates. I'm curious about the supplement you mentioned and would love to hear more 💜

I had my C4-C5-C6-C7 ACDF surgery Thursday morning, (10/20/22), and it went so much better than I could have hoped for. My surgeon was an Orthopedic spine surgeon, and he used all the nerve monitors and safety precautions that you mention, so I'm not convinced you HAVE to use a neurosurgeon. The key is picking the right surgeon based on experience (whether he be an Orthopedic or Neurosurgeon), and do a thorough vetting to make sure they use all the latest safety precautions. My surgeon has performed over 2,000 of these types of surgeries, so I had all the confidence in the world with him. I didn't have to wear a collar, which I'm so thankful for. I'm on my second day of post-op, and most of the pain and tingling which used to radiate down my arm is completely gone. However, my throat is so sore, so I'm using Cepacol extra strength lozenges. I'm also taking two prescription meds (Oxycodone and a muscle relaxant), because I do have pain and stiffness across the back of my shoulders. I know I'm only two days into this, but without a doubt, the throat pain when I swallow is the absolute worst. I'd recommend the lozenges and sucking on crushed ice. Also, soft foods are the way to go until your body learns how to swallow properly again (stuff like mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, grits, scrambled eggs, jello, ice cream, yogurt - you get the idea. Laura, thanks for the great video. You're almost 4 years into yours, so I'm sure you're at 100%. Thanks again.

I had this surgery Jan 27. The worst part was the cramped muscles from the position they put you in for surgery. Also the throat pain. It was harder than I expected. I am on day 5 and still eating cream of wheat and oatmeal. Food gets stuck. I have to wash it down with water and hard swallowing. The incision doesn't hurt. My arm nerve pain is gone. My arms feel the same weight. I still need a little meds but only 2 times a day. I must of done too much today cause It felt fine when I woke up then my arm hurt a four afters after I woke. So I went 9 hrs with out pain meds.

I'm having this surgery for C5 C6 in a few weeks. Your experiences are helping me a lot. To know more what to expect after the surgery. I've talked to several friends who have had it and they all say I'll be glad I did it. But to see you and hear you a week after yours, helps tremendously! Yes, I have a great surgeon who explained it thoroughly, but it helps so much more . Just the idea of somebody cutting into my neck is scary. Great recap! You really knew what you were getting into. I wish my patients did more research and were as knowledgeable about the process as you are. This video goes a long way.
    Couple of comments:
"scars are gnarly and cool" - staples tend to scar more, and I don't know any surgeons who would staple the anterior neck. I saw your scar in a follow-up video and it looks great.
For young, active viewers with a similar problem - discuss the possibility of a cervical disc replacement with your surgeon. I don't know if this was an option for you or not, but it's a better alternative to fusion in many younger patients.

@@dfy hey there! I’m doing so much better since having the surgery! We’re still not entirely sure what caused the disc prolapses (I had 3). The surgeon said I may have just had weak ones from birth and they eroded over time. My C5-C6 was so damaged it was bashing up against the nerves in my spine and causing some serious nerve pain in my arm and in the shoulder area and neck. Most of that completely went away post surgery. Due to the nerve damage a lot of my right arm is still numb in places, but I got used to it and it doesn’t bother me much anymore. The surgery itself went really well and I definitely recommend taking it.

Thanks for the videos. I saw all the videos that you have made. 15 days ago I got a C6 C7 surgery where they replaced the disk. Everything went fine didn't have that much sore throat ate a sandwich right after the surgery, and didn't feel pain afterward. Maybe because of the medicine that i got had some pain after the 1 week after coming out of the medicine. Thanks for some really great videos.

I will have the surgery in 5 days' time. Thank you for enlightening me about this procedure.

Your video is now 3 or 4 years old. I found this on the front top page of my UA-cam 1 16 23. I face a possibility of this surgery. Thanks for the information.
