Incredible interview. You can see the man takes nothing for granted. He has reached the pinnacle of surfing yet manages to keep his two feet firmly on the ground.
One of the best interviews of Mr. Slater I’ve ever seen. His dad treated him the same as mine did me, I was a national, state and city champion at different times. My dad never watched any of my contests. And only said he was proud of me once. It was tough life until that moment. Thank you Mr. Slater for teaching me so many valuable life lessons 🏄🏽♂️🏂🛹🏍️✝️👍🌅
The best interview of Kelly, it shows you how he can talk when not talking to crackheads haha. So cool how he speaks about Sunny and Rob, very gratefull for his friends that helped him shape his surfing. In the end we all help each other in the water to surf better.
Every thing about Kelly Slater is undeniably unmatched. He’s a brilliant man with so many ideas and the best surfer on earth. I love how he stays true to himself and never forgets where he came from. Hats off to you Kelly Slater. You deserve all that you have ❤
Sort of, just be careful of what you can sacrifice to keep perusing success. I love Kelly and am a big fan but realised a couple of years ago the guy is a serious addict, seems to have endlessly kept perusing competition unnecessarily over personal/land life, remember an article where Kalani basically admitted to having to take a back seat to his surfing. Seems to have basically sacrificed creating a family for surfing.
@pete, actually it’s just the opposite! Like boxing once Pacquiao retired boxing has never been the same. KS11 is keeping the WSL alive. as this time. No one wants to watch pro surfing one Kelly retires. The WSL know this!!!
@@Jay-ju9jw you are only proving my point, obsessing over the wsl, who really gives a sht about the wsl? I enjoy it sometimes but there are numerous reasons it is not that popular. You also seem obsessed with his fame and success, which was also my point, and what he has sacrificed for it, he clearly has issues with land life.
Such an inspiration. His work ethic and drive to get to his goals really inspires me. I did not expect to learn so much by watching this but this wisdom and dedication is really the push that I needed to carry on looking up and set goals for myself. Really think Kelly is so incredible!
Wow, Kelly! Thanks for all the inspiration over the years, you have influenced so many people that you may not be aware of. This interview was a genuine discussion, and I applaud you for your heartfelt and honesty. I really commend you for what you have gone through, always being under the microscope , and delivering it the best through the circumstances of being an underdog from the East Coast USA. You are an inspiration and your personal drive has been a great influence for many people.
I started surfing seriously at 40 but I’ve always followed Slater in my youth. He had the best surf clips in the mags and has been the face of surfing for so long. Awesome interview! He’s inspired me to learn to surf in my older years. Pls invite me to your wave pool Kelly.. jk. 🤙🏾
Kelly was the 1st person I ever watched land a 360 air. We were down south at the Sebastian Inlet. I used to just sit and watch him evolve and it was always breathtaking. People this is what a role model looks and acts like... Stay YOU Kelly.... Rettell 10
I remember having a sit down with a mate of mine and his puppy at rainbow bay in the ninetys and having a casual chat. He was staying at greenmount resort and he had to bail because a whole lot of fans spotted him and had to get out of there. What a down to earth person he was back then hasnt changed a bit. Legend
I got to surf with Kelly once, Hatteras Light. I must have been about 19 and he was about 13. I kept hearing some one saying my name in the line up, but it was for this kid...my name is Kelly also. Kid was ripping it up, great timing and so light on his feet. It was a great experience.
Joe, I have watched your interviews with McEnroe, Gretzky, Jeter and Gordon. I will watch Slater next. Your delivery style, preparation and relaxed approach are extremely impressive. In my opinion, you are Best Interviewer I have ever seen.
He is a GREAT champion...!...one of,if not the best surfing will see.....very well spoken & real...!...hope he stays healthy & his bussnis endovers do well 4 him...!...nice interview...!...
One of the best people on the planet. We were the best 2 man volleyball team ever in Cocoa Beach High..... Proud of you Kelly and you know I know the real story.... Very proud of you..... Rettell 10
Kelly slater is a legend. And a nice one on top. Rare combination. How self confident must you be having no problems crying in front of the world being the best surfer that ever lived.
Kelly is definitely in the conversation of the greatest athlete of all time. His success and dominance in surfing is unmatched and the fact he was still winning twice the age of everyone on tour. Although if Andy didn’t pass away he would have given Kelly a run for his money.
Kelly is a great representative of the sport of surfing, he will always be the GOAT ! He should actually have 12 World Titles he got robbed that one year when he had to win the last Pipe contest to win the title and the WSL juiced Mick Fanning in the heat against Yadin Nicol which made him World Champ alot of people thought he lost that heat. And then Kelly went on to win the contest beating John John in the final in pumping 6-8 ft Pipe
So true. There is no way Mick should have been given the score he got to move on. I believe the judges were worried if slater won number 12 he would have retired and there are a lot of us that will stop watching the contests because he isn’t surfing in them.
Can't believe this myth continues to this day, Mick basically got one of the longest left hand barrels at pipe which you rarely see and people are still complaining about it 😄
I remember in the 90's, Kelly was at Rainbow Bay, and we were all out surfing one day and he was staying at the Greenmount Resort. My sister became friends with him, and we went over to his place once and watched a Western tv show of some kind. Next day I was out at Greenmount one day with my sister surfing, I had a CI swallowtail that Al shaped for me. It was glassed with a 6oz and 4oz deck. I was walking up the beach, and Kelly asked: "How do you like that board?" I said, " Ahh, it's a bit heavy, with a 6 & 4oz deck. " His response, which I will never forget... "Then you'll never know good the shape was." After that, I never got more than a double 4oz deck, or single 4oz with a 3/4 - 4oz patch. Simple words that stuck with me for the next 30 years.
Thank you Joe Buck for bringing surfing into the main stream. & who better than our well spoken brother Kelly. Truly a man with no limits. P.j. Rincon Calif.
Curran was a machine and the perfect role model for those like yourself of competitive nature. Those soul surfers like myself were only driven by " The Barrel" .
Pretty epic interview. Kelly is a class act... very heartfelt and emotional. But I do wish they showed some of his impossible DEEP Barrels that resulted in PERFECT 10's. Let the audience really see and understand how incredible of a surfer he is. Obviously they know he's the best but man, seeing how great of a barrel rider he is, where you're watching the wave and you're thinking, no way, no way, no way is he gonna make this barrel, he's so deep inside the wave you can't even see him for like seconds... and again, you're like yeah see, I knew he wasn't gonna make that... Then another second or two later he comes flying out of an impossible barrel. Like he said, he does the IMPOSSIBLE.
Kelly talking about talking to guys in the middle of a heat and competitve advantage mind games etc reminds me of the scene in North Shore when Laird and Rick Kane were in the final heat and Rick was like Im just happy to be here 😅
Glad you can see the funny side of your dad's addiction. He could go drinking anywhere but he made it work around his son wanting something bad. That's love
I remember seeing the comments in tracks after Kelly's 92 and 94 wins absolutely slagging him off because the hangover from the Oz vs seppo thing that occy helped create with his battle with Tom curren. The Ozzie's went quite after 94 and when Kelly got that mutant pipe one that foamballed on black and white.
When was this interview? Must have been around 2016 because they reference Surf Ranch as being in a "top secret location", and that was first revealed in December of that year, plus they also reference "your new brand Outerknown". Regardless, great revealing interview on an icon that will never be matched in the wave-riding world!
Im pretty sure its 10. He was God long enough. Thank you K. Chris B. I stay home reading my Moms accounting books. Good author Dad is. Read it twice. 😂😂😂😂😂😂❤😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Slater and Irons were sworn competitive enemies, but had the utmost respect and administration for one another. Slater and Machado were best friends competing against one another, and truly stoked for one another externally, but deeply competitive inwardly. Is what it is, Machado could've kicked out and kept priority...
Machado and Slater in 1995 was a couple 20 year old dudes, close friends sharing waves at flawless pipe by themselves. One of the best heats in competitive surfing history.
That was a great interview, but it breaks my heart that Kelly doesn’t believe that the incredible things that he’s experienced and seen in his life, was given to him by our creator Jesus Christ!!!
I'm 60 years old, and have been following your career since the beginning. This is the first time I see YOU. Blessings to you brah.
Incredible interview. You can see the man takes nothing for granted. He has reached the pinnacle of surfing yet manages to keep his two feet firmly on the ground.

Not only a surf champion.....Kelly it's also a great speaker. I wish his WavePool it's also built in Lima 🇵🇪 Peru.
Town of Miraflores, to be exactly.

Best interview of Kelly so far.
Gotta thank the interviewer as well, he didnan incredible job letting kelly talk, and moving across kellys career.

Love Ya, Kelly. A Very Human Human, and A Very Great Champion, Human.
I have heard his story a few times but honesty not quite this open about his personal stories. Fantastic interview!
An Absolutely Amazing and Sensitive Person. Just WOW!!!

Excellent interview. Really enjoyed hearing about Kelly’s life and the experiences that shaped him into one of the greatest competitors of any sport.
I have looked up to Kelly for many years! He’s truly the greatest of all time in surfing. The best role model one can have

My hero since 27 years
He stayed at it, for many years. Persistence and dedication
And still going. :) he'll be at pipe at the end of the month.
If you surf, you know that he's also, just one of us.
Touching and interesting interview, thank you.
You're welcome
Kudos
A great man with a big heart
All that success... and so humble! One of the greatest!!!
Not one of, THE, greatest
THE GREATEST for sure
This was one of Kelly's best interviews, with the show of emotions ect. Was very surprised in his lack any.religous values at all, shocked me for sure.

This is a great man!

P.j. Rincon Calif.
We don’t need surfing in the mainstream lmao, enough kooks already thinking they can surf in the big boy lineups
RIP Andy Irons. Greatest style and ahead of his time
Your a stand up guy Kelly.. All the best mate 🤜🤛
“The GREATEST OF ALL TIME!” The East Coast GOAT!
Awesome human being ❤ 🤙
God first 🙏 Thanks for inspiring people for so many years with your surfing gift, Kelly 💙
Kelly is a god, you’re right.
Tom Carroll is a legend and my favorite surfer. His boycott of South Africa competition is what turned me on to surfing. Much love to him and his.
Big wave small waves ...he just shredded them .😊
Very wholesome
Top human being.
53yrs old, still on the pro tour!!!
51, lol, he’s 13 months younger than me 😂 but who’s counting 😊

Curren you mean. Timmy Curran was another amazing surfer.

THE GOAT!!!!
Kelly is great!
RIP Andy Irons
MOST POWER AND DISCIPLINE SURFER OF THE TIMES
The "MJ" of surfing!
The MJ of MJ-Ing 😂
What most people don't know is. Kelly Slater is actually half Syrian Middle East
His dad wasn't a full Syrian. His mom is of Irish descent I believe. I grew up with Kelly. At most he is 1/4 Syrian descent.
@@aerlial360 The media says his half Syrian
@@rossrose1534 Oh. Unfortunately it's not factual, however a lot of things are nowadays in information.

I wish he had more kids.
Is this the Joe Buck of Joe Buck's Surf Shop?
See kiddies. You DONT need to pull umpteen bongs and skoll beer after beer to be a legend.
so this was filmed like 5 years ago???
How old is this interview? Looks about 2013
Everything’s impossible until it’s done.
He also starred in Baywatch at slade 😂

High fived him....an then wrecked his hope of a world title.
