Enjoying Everquest is like enjoying an old car. It doesn't have all the conveniences and creature comforts of modern cars, but it has a visceral experience that only that time period could provide. It's clunky, it's inconvenient, but sure does it feel great when you accomplish something with it.

    • @ryuoki1

Problem with those fancy cars.... Mo conveniences you have, mo problems you see.....
Same issue with the modern games... Not to mention most are trash because they won't challenge a toddler

I remember the fist time I took the boat from FP to Butcherblock. I was level 6 or 7 I think and lagged during the boat zoning and spawned in the middle of the ocean, no boat in sight. I was killed by some fish mob (maybe a shark I can't remember) and respawned back in FP with no idea where my corpse and my gear were. The panic at the thought of losing my crappy gear and handful of gold nearly sent me into tears. Thankfully someone suggested I /petition a guide and that guide summoned my corpse because the boat zoning bug was known by that time. I was so grateful I became a guide myself eventually. I was guide Ailron in Xegony and a couple other servers in case anyone remembers. Fennin Ro was my character home server though. Hail Army of Fate and Eternal Crusaders of Norrath guilds (1999-2003).
Edit: Does anyone remember the Sister Island quest with the kola nuts? I gained like four levels in a single day before Verant/SONY got wise and nerfed it to heck. Still one of my fondest memories of my early EQ days.

Some videos just take you back to a different time. This was one of those videos man. Awesome job! Never even played EQ, but I remember going over to a friends house around 2000. They were playing EQ and Jedi Knight. I remember them telling me how good bard was and i remember thinking "man that game must suck if BARD is the best class" lmao. They were very very poor. Plywood for walls and floors in their rooms, no joke! But somehow, they had enough for the monthly subscription which boggled my mind. That subscription was a killer for most kids like me back then. My parents weren't having that! Anyways, this is some ACTUAL content. Glad i found your channel.

Had a blast playing EQ. Starting on a fresh server and leveling along every one else and building a community is something I will probably never experience again. Leveling took forever, I never made it to level 60 even after a year of playing. Loot was scarced and dying had a huge impact. Crazy times!

Bro, a good Bard wouldn't have been killed by my half elf pally (Rallos Zek). You're 100% correct on that. He'd never kill me, but I couldn't kill him either. It was a literal stalemate. Good god.... there is a lot we could talk about. I'm a pvp live early player, lots of trial and error. Bards.... yeah it seems like you played the fluffing heckling out of the class.

Oh! Bards. I recall vividly (and this is 25 years ago, mind you) the first time I saw a bad _fly by_ waaay faster than someone running with SoW, casually strumming his lute and literally gliding/hovering, legs not even moving/running; just shredding across my line of site like some wizard musician, I couldn’t fucking believe it, it was the most amazing thing I’d seen to date, and in EQ when everything new is a discovery, that was saying something.
Still one of my favorite memories out of a lot of great memories from those early EQ days

If you played AD&D with your friends in the 80s like I did, and you had a DM that played by the rules and didn't give away everything, with rich story telling and a bit of mystery with secrets kept until discovered and kept well then you'll like EQ! In the original eq had a sense of mystery to it. Before the nerf and level limits you could get powerful weapons and items at lower levs that were very rare in game because they were kept secret or on the hush hush. You could gather bits and pieces of info on how to obtain these items through conversations you over hear or have with others. Players were good at keeping secrets and so was EQ. Eq did not tolerate cheating and 1 person playing more than one account at a time back in those days was considered cheating. Expensive way to cheat at that. EQ did not tolerate that crap and neither did most the players!

Everquest was good because it was revolutionary for its time. It basically made D&D come alive, which was a dream come true for some people. However, it only had about 500k active accounts which by today's standards is pretty low.
I go back to it for that reason, the nostalgia. I play for a bit then I stop playing for a year. The biggest problem with the game itself was the time sink. This game was a MASSIVE time sink. It took forever to level, mobs had crazy respawn timers like 28 min and some raid mobs were week spawns. The "reward" was showing off to people. When you got that robe or weapon nobody had from say nagafen, and you ran into a group of people, they were all asking what that was, where do I get it.
Looking back, the game was poorly designed and really was more like an addicting drug which targeted those who would get addicted easy. People who had little to no social life. Those people would poopsock all day, get batphones at 3am and be ready to go. I do not think many people would play a game like that today if it released. I think if it were not for the massive time sink with ultra rare spawns which could take you months to farm, it could have done way better, but that put off many people from playing because you needed to put in 40+ hours a week to be "good".

Pantheon rise of the fallen is an old school EQ inspired indy mmo, most classes have first 50 hours, more chill players are wanted to test now and early access in December 2024. $50 gets you in the game now, +all of EA and full game. Cool music and ok graphics. EQ programmer Steve C is on the project.
