Mytek Liberty MQA DAC

- Mytek scored enormously with the Brooklyn DAC and preamp and introduced a 10% more expensive mark 2 recently. And they introduced the 1000 euro MQA enabled Liberty DAC and headphone amp. This is the subject of this review.

Thanks Hans. 'Sounds' like a nice DAC. Nice to see a DAC-only-no-pre-amp Brooklyn device.
Thank you for yet another informative review. Sadly, my ears and ESS Sabre never agreed no matter what implementation i tried, but i understand many people like it.
Can't wait for the Liberty 2 review
I have applied for a review sample. All we can do is wait.
Hi Hans....loving your site excellent reviews as always, after seeing your videos of the Mytek Liberty MQA DAC & the Pro Ject Pre Box S2 Digital, I was thinking can the Project be as good as the Mytek seen as the quality of the components are of a high standard with the lot of effort put into the setup plus it has a later Sabre chip but is a lot lot cheaper, side by side in a suitable system setup would you sonically notice the difference?
I run a Meridian Explorer 2 and was looking at the Mytek as an upgrade path but the Project has got me thinking now ?
I would notice the difference but I can't know if you would....
Hi Hans, Great review and as always to the point. Just out of interest do you use an alternate power supply with you Brooklyn?
Yes, but only because I have one (the sBooster). There is a small improvement. I understood that the Mark 2 version of the sBooster should give a bigger improvement. It is due within weeks and I will review it when it arrives.
The new RME ADI-2 DAC looks interesting, about same price as the Liberty DAC but much more functionality. And its from the "studio world" so probably a little different. Might be worthy of a review?
Hans, thanks for all your great work. Can you let me know if you have combined this with the bluesound node 2i? Much appreciated.
No, I used the SOtM but it should work with the Bluesound.
Thanks Hans!
A very very very good review as always!
At last you did this review!
I have been waiting a long time.
I have order one last week and are now very optimistic for the first time with the DAC.
An Q, Did you test it with 12 VDC?
Perhaps with an Linear power supply by SBooster
If so, any better sound?
An gift is coming thru PayPal
Keep on loving music
I found the improvement with the sBooster BOTW limited. A version 2 is due soon and I wouldl wait for that. It is developed using the Brooklyn for listening tests. I would have loved to do the review sooner, but I depend fully on the availability of a review sample. Thanks for your gift, that really helps.
Thanks for the review. Could the Elac Discovery be used with the Liberty DAC for MQA purposes? I have Tidal.
Yes it can. Just connect one of the digital outputs of the discovery to the liberty and make sure the volume control on the discovery is at 100%.
Hello Hans, I've been following your channel for a long time and I need some advice, is the Mytek Liberty DAC still sounding good compared to the cheap Chinese competition? Thank you very much!
I don't know all cheap Chinese DACs but the ones I know perform less than the Liberty.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Thank you very much, you contributed to ending the discussion with my friend.
Hi Hans,
Mytek recommends a 12v 4-6 amp LPS. Do you have a recommendation for a LPS that matches the Mytek specs?
Thanks!
See ua-cam.com/video/tCeSbOfqikw/v-deo.html
Hi Hans
Since you did this review Mytek has done an upgrade in the software.
As I read it I don´t understand if its something that improve the sound.
Can you explain?
v.1.30 / 2018-06-11
- new setting : alternate volume indication
- improved encoder operation
- fixed phase issues on analog outputs
- fixed RGB driver
I’m abroad now so I can’t check it. But I will when I get home again, two weeks from now.
Now the have a new software, ver 1.31 with MQA decoder upgraded and custom ESS FIR filter enabled
Is this making it sound better?
For the review I had the Liberty DAC on loan and it's sent back again. So I can't say.
Thanks for sharing.
Does it worth twice the price of a Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital?
I want a DAC to my Tidal use throw PC, amp&speakers.
That depends on your hearing and how you value money😃
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Thanks.
I have the Mytek Brooklyn dac+. After 18 months of light use, the display stopper to work. Contacted the support service of Mytek they have never replied. My only chance to modify settings Is connecting It to my PC. Bad experience
I have the same problem and contacted the Polish HQ. That went fine.
Hi Hans, I have a noob question for you.. sorry! I already have an integrated amp. If I use the Mytek liberty to get it’s high quality MQA decoding and plug in the analogue input of the integrated amp, would it convert it back to digital and then to analogue ruining the Mytek sound in the process? In my case it’s the Parasound halo. Thanks!
Why would you want to do that? What do you try to achieve?
The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel at the moment my setup is: Roon - oppo udp-203 (Roon Ready) - Integrated amp (Parasound) - 2.1 system. So I’m using Parasound internal DAC. What I’d like to try is improve sound by an external DAC (possibly Mytek liberty) between oppo and integrated amp and get MQA decoding also.
What I’d like to be sure is whether the integrated amp would convert it back to digital and back to analogue (I definitely don’t what that). Do you think it would improve sound? Thanks for your time!
If your amplifier is not able to handle analogue signals without first converting them to digital, there will be little gain in quality using an external DAC of higher quality.
Hans, how would this compare to a NOS DAC like the Metrum Amethyst or the Audio-gd R1 TCXO? These are both R2R DAC's, maybe you can do a video on these kind of DAC's ?
I haven't reviewed those so I can't say.
Ok, I know you usually don't give product advice, but since I use the same amplifier and streamer as your set 2 would you prefer this DAC over the Chord Mojo in your set 2 (regardless of the price difference)?
I really can’t have an opinion on products I haven’t reviewed. Sorry.
Could You compare hi-fi DAC-s to a studio grade DAC like crane song solaris DAC?
I wouldn’t know how to define ‘studio grade DAC’, other than some practical features and the distribution channel.
I'm interested only in sound comparison. The Solaris measured clock's jitter is 0,045ps, the lowest in any DAC in production today.
The Solaris has an nominal output voltage of +24 dBu. That equals +21,8 dBV as where consumer equipment is standardised at +6 dBV. The secondary output is 6 dB's lower at +15,8 dBV and that is still very high. You can attenuate the maximum output but you can't lower the thermal noise level so you limit the dynamic range by using this DAC on normal consumer equipment. I won't review it for this reason. That doesn't mean that it will never work fine under consumer conditions, but then you have to think over you system design - in particular the gain structure of it - with great care. It is a bit like driving a rally car for normal day use.
great DAC but it would be nice if Mytek made a upgraded model w/o pre and headphone amp and a faster clock like in the DAC+ and sold it for $1500
I can imagine that each and every one would have wishes like that.
I'm new to audio, so I find it odd that it doesn't have a pre-amp but it still has volume control!! I was wondering, can I use it between my TV and my amplifier or do I need the Brooklyn Dac for that application? Thank you in advance.
A pre-amp can select inputs and adjust volume. Some pre-amps have more functionality like tone control. he Mytek DAC's all have input select and volume and therefore are also pre-amps, including the Liberty.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Thank you for the explanation because in the video at 0:40 you said it has no pre-amp so I had to ask the question.
Hi Hans, do you know any other mqa dac without preamp, below 1K Usd? Thanks
See www.mqa.co.uk/customer/our-partners
AFAIK, the liberty dac can only do MQA via usb2. Is this true?
As far as I know this is incorrect.
Hi Hans and thanks for this review. I wonder if I could ask a question about the operation of this? Can it be used purely as a DAC i.e. set to full-output and bypassing the pre-amp volume control? If so, presumably the headphone output still retains variable level? I looked in the manual but there was no mention of this and Mytek hasn't replied to my email...
It has been some time since I reviewed it. I don't think the volume on the HP output can be set separately from the line output. If the volume is set to 100%, it is lossless and thus can drive an amp. Switching to HP's you might need to lower the volume.
How does the Liberty DAC compare to the Chord Hugo2?
You find the review of the Chord Hugo 2 here: ua-cam.com/video/mo7RlAxSWOo/v-deo.html
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel thanks! Really like your reviews.
With using TIDAL, would you use the Chord Hugo2, or the Mytek Brooklyn DAC as standalone DAC/amp combo's? Using it to power the ZMF Verité (300 Ohms)
