I grew up in the NYC area(North Jersey) however when I was in 8th grade National Geographic did a story on Chicago and after reading it on a Friday our Social Studies teacher asked us what do we see ourselves doing in the future. I said I’ll live in Chicago. Of course my classmates chided me and many said you’ll never leave here. So for me the almost 3 years I lived in Chicago was one of most satisfying experiences of my life. I’ll never forget going jogging by Lake Michigan on my first Saturday there and being left speechless as I looked at the skyline. Love Chitown
This was amazing! It felt like Chicago always had some challenge, then bounced back over and over again. A very interesting story filled with scenarios that seemed unbelievable: reversing the river, making the city literally rise, bouncing back after a fire, building the first modern skyscraper, water holding chambers, being a transportation center, the World's Fair, and more and more! I'm a nerd, so I loved visiting Fermilab and its many museums. And its skyline is a magnificent work of art. Thanks a lot for this amazing documentary!
A complete/remastered version of the 4-part series on Chicago I published earlier this year. I've been meaning to stitch it together and figured the DNC starting in Chicago tonight was about as good a time as ever. I have a new mini-doc on Johannesburg that I'm really excited to show you next week! Hope you don't mind this (sort of) repost
I would like to give a shout out to a great Chicagoan, Julius Rosenwald! Part-owner and president of Sears, Roebuck, founder of the Museum of Science and Industry, gave his fortune away funding the Rosenwald Fund, over $70 million to public schools, colleges, museums, Jewish charities, and African-American education in the south, the Rosenwald Schools!❤️
I’ve lived in the Chicago south suburbs for the majority of my life. I’ve been to NY, NY, LA, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Seattle and a lot of the major cities in the country. I’ve traveled to about 32 or 33 states and was stationed in Oahu, Hawaii for 3 1/2 years in the military after being in Ft Eustis, Virginia and Ft Dix, N.J. There’s no question that Hawaii is absolutely gorgeous. The biggest issue is the cost of living there. When you’re in the military you can purchase your regular needs at the PX or AAFES ( their stores). If you’re not in the military the prices are outrageous so it’s unsustainable unless EVERYONE is working full time in the household. In Hawaii you’re also limited to staying on the island you’re on unless you’re flying (which costs money) or you have a decent boat or pay for passage (more money). It’s nice to live there for a while but I wouldn’t want to live there permanently. Of all the places I’ve been I still love Chicago the best / most.
My uncle was a stockyard inspector. He ended up becoming a complete vegan because of the horrible things he saw there. This was before they had the same standards they have today. Employees becoming sick wasn’t unusual. Sears used to sell houses through their catalogs that were shipped through the railroads.
Glad to see our democratic system of voting made it all the way to 20204. Take that Roman, British, and all other major empires in history! USA! USA! USA!
“The Crossroads of America” has been Indiana’s tagline, particularly for Indianapolis. Chicago has so many nicknames… it doesn’t need to steal from Indy.
It's always been that since the railroads were built, and the claim is based on how many interstates meet there and freight volume. Indiana is the pass thru turnpike of America, hence the lack of population to this day.......
West Virssippi (aka Indiana) is a 3rd World State....nothing to brag about there except for .....oh the 1st known serial killer. @brentsmelser I've been all over this country lol! I already know there's roads in worse shape than Indianapolis and Indiana in general! Michigan, for example might as well be the moon!
Lovely documentary., one note about Jean Baptiste Du Sable birth country is unknown. The often erroneously repeated statement about Haiti was made up by an author whose work has been corrected by actual historians. Historians posit that it is much more likely he was in fact American born.
Great video! I lived in Chicago 1992-2005. 20:25. Dude is dead on. Chicagoans make the most of summers spring and autumn. I had a friend from Europe visit and took him to Oak Street beach. When he got home his wife looked at his pictures and accused him of lying about going to Chicago.
Meigs was a class D airport. Meaning anyone flying around the lakefront/downtown needed clearance from the tower. Now that it’s gone there are next to zero regulations with the exception of ORDs and MDWs class B and C. Now anyone with an airplane can fly wherever they want around the city without talking to anyone. Meigs in fact made air traffic safer around the city…
Chicago is across the lake to Buffalo? Having lived in SW Michigan and in upstate NY, that state is far from accurate. To get to Buffalo they'd need to cross the better parts of 3 of the Great Lakes.
@@MBT06The description of the trade flow in context is quite accurate. The long journey through the lakes was better than by land. The text should have been "across the lakes..." The ghosts of Chicago should thank the ghosts of NY for the Erie Canal.
And now, Illinois is shrinking. Good job, Democrats. Dallas is going to overtake Chicago's metro area soon, and Houston will follow shortly thereafter. And then, Houston proper will become the third largest city in America when measured to legal city limits.

An amazing choice, it's a beautiful city.
Smart move!

It is a very high-quality, impressive, informative, and professional work. Very well done!
As a lifelong Chicagoan I never have been able to figure out why nothing is named in honor of Chesbrough, no street, no park, no school...
The city of Chicago owes TDC. Well done
No we dont. We owe enough people already *cough* Parking *cough*

cities are but prisoners of geography
It's not likely St. Louis appreciated Chicago sending its waste their way down the river.
April to September its miserably hot, October to March its miserably cold
