As somebody who lives in the general area, this building certainly stands out in our changing skyline. Hopefully a doc like this is being made for Waldorf Astoria Miami going up to 1,049 ft a few blocks south on Biscayne Blvd! A first for Miami and the state
Wow, Zaha was only 66? They are building her legacy and her last design. Absolutely amazing work of art she designed and the engineering that went in to make it work is insane.
This building is an ecological disaster. A staggering amount of concrete for ONLY 83 appartments for few Billionnaires who will crash there once in a while. What a waste.
you are right... nothing earth friendly about it, sad too, i was an elevator technician for my whole career and now living in a rainforest i feel no elevator is necessary ever
Hadn't caught up on Miami's skyline in some time but got to visit recently while taking a cruise on RCL's Icon. Drive right into downtown and got to pass this wonderful looking tower a few times! There's certainly nothing like it, for sure, and the design instantly stood out. Cool to find a documentary on it!
Go see it in person. Aston Martin now has a tower, Dolce & Gabbana are working on one, Bentley, Porsche have ones in North Beach (Sunny Isles). 5 Park is nearing completion in South Beach. Frankly its getting out of hand with all the construction going on but as a architecture buff, I do like to see the progress daily.
The script's Purple Prose and fake drama are dreadful. A straight forward description of the work would have been sufficient. The real hero here are the structural engineers. they should habve been featured up front with Zahja Hadid.
I have no doubt Zahja Hadid would’ve been more prominent in the video if she hadn’t died suddenly from a heart attack shortly after the vertical construction began! Although saying that, it would’ve been an uphill climb to resuscitate this PBS production! It’s a pity the video didn’t have a more lavish budget to do her work justice. But…. that’s PBS for you
It's indeed a magnificent work of art. Zaha is surely a legend. The workers put all their efforts and knowledge in completing this grand building. Which makes them surely proud of themselves. It's another landdmark. I just don't like the name scorpion. Maybe because I'm Taiwanese and believe in Feng Shui.
Watching this I should be marveling at the design and architecture but all I keep saying to myself is great more unaffordable housing in South Florida just what we need.
All construction plans were done with the American Standard. Don’t know about the GFRC molds, but Arch, Struct, MEP, Shops, etc… were done in Feet/Inches.
it stands because of structural engineers, all i see is project developers, managers, interiors, etc. No mention of structural consultants who made the building come to reality.
2:36 "And it's held together on the EXTERIOR!" 🙄 WOW! Put the frame on the outside like an "exoskeleton"... What a revolutionary modern concept! (which was invented in the 1880s...) LOL!
It's called the Museum 1000 Building right there off of Biscayne, IDK's where "Scorpion" came from, I used to live off of 20th Street and 2nd Ct, in Overtown, literally across the street from where Wynwood begins. When they were building it, I'd never heard the title "Scorpion" in all my years living here (since 1995). Now, they're about halfway in with that atrocious bridge to complete the skyline. The building, however, is magnificent up close.
You know Yes this is a high end build but this will lead the system for new building technology. I will never own one of these but what a unique design and building challenge
Truly remarkable!!! bravo to all the problem solvers along the way. I just find it hard to believe that 1/8th of an inch on one one floor would cause so much trouble. I feel the panels must have had some built in tolerances that would make up for such a small differences. Does anyone know if that would be true?
It does look distinct but the sad truth is that after 5-6 months, 99.9999999% of locals and tourists who walk or drive by will see just another medium-height condo building in the forest of existing condo buildings. It will be an interesting condo building for architecture enthusiasts, for whatever that's worth.
Absolutely not worth the price of the unit. bland lifeless, zero character and low ceilings. For that kind of money, you can buy a beautiful lawn with pool and a lush Casita circular driveway with fountain gates at the front of the driveway the house with character
United States is the glory of the world in architecture as you see for 500 years USA built many skyscrapers all over united states as scropion tower. All the world admire, salute, support and endorse USA forever.

It is the guys on site that took the pain putting it in practice that impressed me, not she that sat on her comfort zone with a pen and draw her heart desire
How are you going to get the plumbing in there 😮 When that man said when an architect writes it it means it can be built. Have you ever seen a piece of paper refuse the pencil ? 😂 That's not true at all. Not just because it's drawn can you build it. This woman is excellent at keeping the function of what it is and the form of what it could.
No question about it, Americans are best in high rise building. Advances in architectural technology have enabled the creation of stunning curved and spiral structures, making the construction of such buildings a formidable challenge and reality.
As I watch until the end, I see engineers are having a problem with structural disalighnment. Is it because the panel they ordered are using their standard measurement as meters and centimeters, while Americans is in inches measueing units. Just guessing.
With all due respect…never. Of course I’m being silly we use metric for all sorts of stuff but the English weights and distances are so engrained in our culture it’s how we think, which is crazy because the fractions we use for small measurements are quite difficult and confusing but our tradesmen have mastery of it
@@nsh1980 In the UK we converted from English measurement to the metric system in 1974 thats 50 years ago, eventually it became easier and more accurate building and engineering trades are in millimetres.

Il never understand why construction companies put ridiculous time schedules on themselves... And here they are, working with components they have never experienced... Putting unrealistic time frames on themselves...
They compete with other companies for the job from the developers. For the developers time and speed is everything…. A timeline getting stretched out can cost them everything, getting sold units turned over early can net them a fortune. The result is exactly as you described, everyone at the top is committed to a crazy timeline and everyone who actually builds it is limited by reality and rolls their eyes constantly in meetings with the big wigs. It happens at every project
Imagine if ALL of the money used for this billionaires' building went to making low income highrises. Just imagine. Probably could house 20,000 people, easily
great video! i really enjoyed watching the construction process unfold. however, i can't help but feel that using such a controversial design might not be the best way to approach architecture. isn't it more important to focus on functionality and community needs rather than just trying to impress with bold structures? just my two cents!
Miami is building large buildings to cater to people who aren't from there and have no roots by gentrifying real historic neighborhoods. It's a horrible city, full of grifters.
This looks to be an overly complex and wasteful construction technique…each panel requires a separate mold, and all the packaging to ship the panels undamaged alone, would negate it as any sort of adaptable solution. In addition, the amount of rebar looks like 1/2 the volume of each poured column. Why not just make it out of steel?
its like they said "take everything you know about cost effective building and time tested simplicity, and throw it out the window! were baking sobething unnecessarily expensive, and complex for no reason other than because government subsidies and CEO profits".
I sped through this! Nature has worked out a lot of problems- rather reminds me of a whale skeleton. Catenary curves? With that much steel, this may work well in earthquake country.
Using GFRC as both concrete form and permanent exterior finish is brilliant, will save both time and money as well as a great final finish. Dame Zaha Hadid was a revolutionary and gift to the world, may she rest in peace.
Miami has probably the most unremarkable skylines of any major city in the country. Glass boxes with NO interesting architectural details do this does make for a unique building in Miami says me a long time Miami resident.
