- I am always hesitant to use words like cult or mafia in these videos, but these people are starting to make that increasingly difficult with their behaviours towards their colleagues and gamers. A black game dev known as Del Walker has been silenced for speaking out about the uglification of the black female characters by other black developments. I love how I was a "cringy anti-SJW" for years back between 2013-2022 until this crap hit critical mass and suddenly everything we were saying would happen happened.
It's not a hard formulas, when you insert radical individuals into your hobby who TELL YOU they will change your hobby, they will inevitably CHANGE YOUR HOBBY. Movies, books, videogames, anything. Atp, we need games to completely go indie. These companies never want to give their customers they want, and expect us to buy their garbage and call us the bad guys if we dont buy their shet.
How you think a developer can afford to go completely indie? And you still going to have variety of characters and stories because not everyone is hive mind and that includes variety of character design
Why do they do this? Because they are insecure about their own looks and they want to use games as a way to change what's "normal" or "standard" for beauty in women.
I also wouldn't be surprised if they want to push the idea that women with masculine features are also beautiful on behalf of a certain social group. In other words, they want to condition men to be attracted to women with masculine builds and facial features
It angers me to know that even other black devs in the industry would silence their own so quickly.
It makes me wonder if I could ever succeed in the industry if I can’t even trust in the integrity of my own people.
This hits home for me as well. Seeing our own sell one another out for brownie points and a leg up should not be tolorated. Not just for us, but for people of ALL races and creeds.

As someone who wanted to go to school to become a video game developer, and as someone who would like his own small studio, this disappoints me. I was already considering not pursuing this career path for other reasons.

It was already exposed that that DEI points are connected to investments from big fish like Blackrock. That’s why these “consultant companies” started to grow like mushrooms after the rain, cause that brings big bucks.
Covid hurt gaming industry hard, people bought a lot of video games being locked down. So studios started to hire more people, they needed more money. But it backfired hard, now we see studios closing, thousands of people being fired, millions wasted. That’s why they need this big bucks from investors. Investors want a good DEI score. That’s where those consultants come in. Always follow the money.

At this point, it just shows that the AAA gaming market needs to crash and burn. This is why i mostly only play indie and Eastern Games at this point, because you can see the gun being held to his head and this is just the case we know of these ppl dont deserve to be supported.

To offer another perspective, perhaps the people spoke to him didn’t say “get in line”.
Perhaps they told him something along the lines of “calm down, cause you’re on the bosses radar to be fired”.

I think if you're a person that appreciates the beauty of black women and enjoys video games, that you've known its been this for a LONG time. Mostly because people don't want to play as black women as mains but then they aren't exactly doing their best to make them appealing. It has mostly fallen to Japanese designs to get some of my most beloved black female characters in the mix such as Sheva Alomar and Master Raven. What I've done is taken it upon myself to create beautiful female characters in video games that allow for a character creator. Over on the Western side of the game, black women characters are basically just Debra Wilson. Considering the amount of gorgeous black e-girls and actresses that I am sure exist... it's far too obvious.
I am truly sick and tired of virtue signaling in video games, everything has to be political in every single spec of games especially when it's made by the westerns, DEI has been affecting games and movies for too long enough and they discriminate a singular race cuz they think we're privileged, You either write a good story, or have a game be extremely related to diversity, And having to make attractive characters look unattractive is leads the downfall of certain games, and there's no other company that I can think of other than Sweet Baby, The budget for the newer games are never as good as the older titles, and these are the same people who could be xenophobic to Japanese all due to a design of characters 😭
The problem is that you people complain all day and at the end of the day you end up buying these games anyway. If people Boycott these games en masse, they will get the message.

I find it interesting that the original commenter ia basically admitting to a bias but thinks it is someone else's duty to indulge it. You are worse than privileged; you are spoiled. No one has forced you to play these games or consume any media (although advertising may be the exception). The only issue here is people are so inclined to deny there is a wide range in the form and expression of people. The gaming community seems maladaptive. Perhaps that is the bigger problem.

It's not to downplay Indie. The opposite actually. Most people behind those actually care about the product unlike more mainstream/AAA stuff in general, not just Western. They shouldn't be compared to the crap big companies put out as far as this conversation goes.

Been noticing this for a long time now. One of the most egregious example of this is Tanya from Mortal Kombat 1.
I really, really, really don't understand what making us look at ugly, masculinized game women is supposed to accomplish. I don't.
They're trying to change beauty standards and behaviors. Its super obvious, especially with all the trans nonsense going on, making the female characters look more masculine is supposed to change peoples views on that sort of appearance. Obviously it'll never work because attractive women and characters exist REGARDLESS, plus you can't change what it is people find attractive inherently. Its just the way it is.
They want us to accept trans women appearance as being how a woman should looks like...I don´t care about trans people in real life, really, I just think their choice is beyond stupid, but I don´t care, but I do care that they are destroying all the entertainment industry

black voices only get propped up if they are promoting the message. If you're "off code" or a pull yourself up by your own bootstraps kinda guy thats when they show you what they really think of you and how racist they really are.

I play Dead By Daylight, and it has the kind of demographics (large LGBT community, sizable amount of women players) that these devs probably want to encourage. Genuinely don't believe game would be profitable if BHVR pursued uglification.
Players male and female alike gravitate towards attractive female survivors with flashy or revealing cosmetics (Sable Ward, Feng Min, Kate Denson). Ada Wong in DBD has her iconic "too sexualized for remake" dress from the OG Resident Evil 4 as a default.
Survivors that fit a woke aesthetic like Haddie Kaur or Jane Romero (whom I don't mind TBH) aren't picked frequently, and Ellen Ripley or Laurie Strode (both fantastic in their franchises) aren't picked much because their defaults are boring + no cosmetics.

The solution to the ugly characters in video games problem is to become your own game dev and make your own independent games, or support developers who don't uglify characters.

I know character designs change but that’s usually in phases and involves the lead designer and the game director (BOTW Link). Such a dramatic shift from start to finish often includes name (Lara Cruz > Lara Croft).
To see this dramatic change without the in-between phase or the lead designer’s input feels a bit weird.
Obviously to have multiple occasions where your own job is overwritten by a higher up is frustrating, especially as an artist.
In the the information age where risk of extremism from reactionaries is high (d☠️ threats and doxing and bullies, oh my!), it’s might be company policy to not vent frustration on Socials (ESPECIALLY Twitter).
What else within the game did he work on?
Could maybe the artbook alleviate some of this public concern?
Could _he_ have received messages from gamergaters of “validation” and got increasingly uncomfortable with the comment thread, realizing most of the people he disagrees with are treating him as their posterboy/new member?

Its also possible they realized doing talks on things like "Black Representation in Video Games" doesn't move the discussion forward, increases segregation, and requires an emphasis on race that is counter productive to doing good work.

When you champion the death of artistic expression and making something enjoyable for the sake inclusivity, mock people who vocally don’t like it by labeling them as “gamer gaters”, I don’t feel bad for you when it ends up being your turn. Say whatever you want, I don’t feel bad for him because he wouldn’t feel bad for others in his predicament. He even said “I’m not like those gamergaters, I’m special because “black excellence and beauty”, so he doesn’t get labeled as bad for wanting what most people do as well. From what I've been able to understand with the "uglification" of women, it seems like going from one extreme to the other. I can understand that we are being bombarded with images of "the ideal" and have been for a very long time which can get somewhat tiresome. So having characters that don't fit the mold I think is fine but now the pendulum is swinging perhaps a little too far. As a woman who likes to game and has been gaming since I was 9, I never really had an issue with attractive characters in games. Lara Croft had a ridiculous figure and so did Bayonetta but I love those characters and the games that they come from are solid in my opinion. I don't see why we can't have both and I don't like how the idea that a regular looking character has to also push certain ideas through their dialogue. It just makes it more annoying. I'm not happy with the landscape of gaming anyway, we used to have amazing games with all types of characters, great stories and fun gameplay. What we have now is depressing, uninnovative, samey games where DLC is pushed and at times "a must" in order to have a few crumbs that they bothered to programme.
Black designer should get their own game development company so they can design the character they want .
I've been thinking about it for a while now and I'm just gonna say it. Western Media's (Movies, games etc) has a big problem with a lack of diversity.
TLDR: They surround themselves within echo chambers within echo chambers all to create one big circle jerk.
But a good amount of western media is made in or filtered through a single state within a single country. And that industry regularly hires based on favoritism and nepotism. They're not going to hire people they don't like. And this isn't just limited to creators but also critics. We've all seen where forms of criticism are labelled as a form of bigotry. Our boy Del Walker was tweeting about how much he stans Alissa Mercante not too long before his grocery store aunties tweet. Former employees at Volition studios admitted that games aren't being made for gamers anymore but game developers. And they do this because they want to control the culture and your wallet.
This is also why for all their talk about lifting up diverse voices, they hate foreign media. This is why they constantly feel the need to remake Asian shows and movies like The Good Doctor. They're attacking the studios behind Asian games like Black Myth, Stellar Blade, and most JRPGs. This is why when Anime first came to the west, comic artists and cartoonists smeared anime has being inferior. They don't want competition. They don't care about YOUR representation, they care about THEIRS.
And this is why when our boy Del Walker speaks out, He's silenced. Because he tried to speak out against the culture they're trying to create.
This is genuinely concerning.
Sadly, based on what Del Walker (aka The Cartel Del) stated, in the past, people like him probably supported, in some way or another, the "ugly-fication" of fictional female characters in video games, so as to "defeat the male gaze," and force male gamers, to get used to new woke standards of "female beauty" for a "modern audience." Now, he is complaining that the very ideology, which he may have initially championed, is now being used to suppress his own artistic creativity. Simply put, this is all a consequence of what he probably pushed/supported before; only now his own work is being targeted for censorship.
Thats been going on for decades, nothing new. The difference now is it getting exposed and being said out loud.
