I mean even Silent Hill2/3, MGS 1 and 2 got PC releases soon after their console releases. We could have had a sharp looking Silent Hill 1 back in early 2000
this game is a real horror adventure. It has a very nice build for scares and slowly unravels interesting plots chapter by chapter. I wish they will remake this like a faithful remake. Shattered memories is good reimagining but can't consider that a remake.

also how to get these --- sorry but RetroArch is the most complicated emulator out there. beetle-psx-libretro HW 0.9.44.1 (4a75947) libretro - slang-shaders (36db5c1)
very nice! looks better then epcsxe with similar cheats and hacks active. Anyway to get full widescreen like epcsxe can do? If so, this would be the best way to play the game. :D
i5 2500k 4.3GHz here. I'm trying to get at least stable 29.97 but once I overclock PSX CPU more than 160% the sound starts cracking. After 200% the picture just slows down. Same happens with 60 fps cheat. I can get 59.94 with 200% overclock but the picture just slows down and sound cracks af. What is going on? :(
Hmmm try to disable the CPU overclocking, and overclock the GTE instead (4x or 8x), and see if it affects the game speed. Also, if you're using Windows, go to settings, drivers, and change the audio driver to WASAPI, that should help you with the sound crackling
The OS is Windows 10 LTSB 2016. All drivers are up to date. Thanks for the advice but wasapi didn't help, the amount of crackling is the same despite of the driver. I tried every possible combination of CPU-GTE oveclocking. GTE overclock helps with framerate but contributes heavily in sound crackling. GTE rasterizer overclock doesn't do anything as it seems with or without GTE overclocking. My videocard is GTX560 and I use OGL because Vulkan is not supported, maybe that's the problem, or is it Linux version that's faster? PS1 emulation has been a pain in the ass for me lately. I'd use good old ePSXe if I didn't discover PGXP. It was nightmare since then.
Aah I think the problem is your GPU then, and not because it's not powerful enough, but because the OGL renderer is slowly getting obsolete, and the performance gains of the vulkan renderer are huge (specially in this emulator, which is pretty CPU/GPU intensive when compared to ePSXe or PCSXR) If you're interested in PGXP, you can use this emulator www.ngemu.com/threads/pcsxr-pgxp.186369/ which works wonderfully, even in low-end PCs. And if you're interested in running the game at 60fps, you can download the latest version of ePSXe, use the same cheat code, and set the cpu overclock between 3x and 5x. But if you're looking for using both the PGXP and the 60fps hacks at the same... I'm afraid the vulkan renderer of retroarch is the only way
I actually tried PCSXR-PGXP before RetroArch but I had even bigger problem with it. I don't why but framerate is horrible most of the time with constant dips below 30 down to 10s (I use RTSS for framerate monitoring, in PCSXR it actually shows internal fps). School courtyard for example becomes unplayable at 13fps. I know it dips there on original hardware but not that much. If I turn framelimiter off RTSS shows 60fps and it plays at doublespeed. If I try to lock framerate with RTSS or 1/2 vsync through nvidia control panel gamespeed will fluctuate around 1x but won't be constant 1x. That's really weird. I couldn't get it to work properly no matter what, so I moved to RetroArch since then.
You sure it's not the game's fault? I mean, Silent Hill on the ps1 does run THAT bad, and there are some moments where the framerate goes below 15fps (like inside the school bus or the convenience store). Anyways, maybe there's something wrong with your gpu driver and how it handles vsync. Try to disable the desktop compositing and see if that fixes the framerate in PCSXR (disabling the desktop compositing in windows 10 is a bit tricky, but it's doable: superuser.com/questions/1016170/temporarily-disable-desktop-composition-in-windows-10 ) Another thing you can do in Retroarch is turning on the Threaded Video and Hard GPU Sync options, and see if that fixes the 60fps slowdown or the audio crackling
The levels are fine, the original PS1 displays images in sRGB, so there's barely any colorspace conversion between the PS1 and the PC. The reason why the blacks look grey is because some ps1 games used dithering patterns to "improve" the shading in older TVs... which makes the colours look a bit weird and washed out on modern HDTVs. But there's no need to use SweetFX, you can just disable the Dithering effect on the settings and that's it :P
Correct me if im wrong but dithering only appears with 16bpp rendering. Actually 16bpp + dithering looks much better than 32bpp at night, loading areas appear much less noticable, there's smooth transition without rough black borders in front of Harry's face. So dithering should be on when playing in 16bpp and there is no dithering when playing in 32bpp, so no point to turn it off, it won't make any difference. Anyway, blacks are still greyed out when using 16bpp + dithering, so levels correction really helps with that, and black become black as it was on CRT. imgur.com/a/fT6j7Zw I think the last picture is most true to the original and how it should be played if someone wants more OG experience.
Huh... I think you're actually right, dithering only works at 16bits. I always thought that dithering somehow affected the rgb levels, but turns out it's just the emulator that uses a limited color range, that's all Anyways, I can't use reshade on linux so I guess I'll have to download some shader for retroarch to fix the levels. But thanks for your explanation! :D
@@Vsevolod3788 The cause of dark grey in the distance instead of pitch black is not related to dithering or emulation - it's the game itself artificially brightening the screen. This is handled by the game's internal "Brightness level" setting which is at 3 by default. Any other value than 0 does artificially brighten the in-game screen (not the menus, maps and so on). This happens on actual hardware as well and seems to be intended behaviour of this setting, but with a correctly adjusted monitor you really don't need it and thus just set the game's brightness level setting to 0. You will find it suddenly no longer looks washed out and black is finally black. I've been setting it to 0 for ages because of that. That default of 3 might have been useful back in the day when played on a badly adjusted CRT in a bright room.
I can't get it working for some reason and I have no idea what I'm doing either tbh (this is the first time I'm using retroarch.) I got to the point that the game is running and I added the cheat (I tried both in the emulator and by editing one of the CHT files (Silent Hill (World) (GameShark) or the one in the Beetle PSX HW folder called Silent Hill (USA).CHT to no avail. If I overcloack the cpu it runs in slow motion and if I don't nothing changes.. in general the cheat doesn't seem to be working or doing anything. I got a ryzen 2700x with a 1070 so my pc shouldn't be a problem and I also switched to vulkan.
