  • My dad had his second hip surgery and has recently been given the okay to put weight on the foot again and start walking. He has an aluminum cane that he uses, but my daughters and I thought it'd be nice if he had one that looked a little better so I got a seasoned stick and a chunk of maple scrapwood and came up with this. I hope you enjoy it. If you do, please let me know by liking and subscribing...oh, and hit the bell notification so you can catch my next build too.

    Brilliant video, not full of chat. I also like the way you didn't put a collar between the handle and the pole. 👍

      Thanks, it was a lot of hand work, but I kind of enjoyed working in a quiet shop.

      Thank you! I got it just straight enough to work out. Next time I will try using a steam box.

      Thank you very much...I really enjoyed making this stick and ended up making one for a friend's dad as well. Really, really like the one in your profile pic!

      @@StanCrafted Thanks. It's one I made a couple of years ago. One really cool piece of yellow birch. The curvy area was a 4 inch log. Turned out nice. A cane collector from Georgia bought it.

    What a beautiful walking stick? Your father must have been thrilled! If I may ask... you wrapped the branch with paper, wet it and then used heat on it but not in the area you have in the vice grip. I assumed you were trying to straighten it out but now I am not sure. Also, did you do anything in particular to strengthen the branch or is is a hardwood? (I am just trying to learn more and this video had great stuff to learn from)

      Thank you! I wet and heated the stick where I needed to straighten it. I tried the torch and paper towel first because I didn't want to scorch the wood. I got the wood a little pliable that way and then kept the heat on it with the heat gun. I moved the stick a little further into the vise after I had it hot enough to become pliable, but kept that part just outside the vise so I could get the best leverage for gently bending it towards straight. The stick became straighter, but not perfectly so.

    Hi! I'm about to start making my first cardigan stick (same book!) from a piece of skip-salvaged oak plank. What wood did you use for the head on this one?

      Hi! I used Maple for the head of this stick. I would think Oak is a good choice too.

    That’s really cool that you made your Dad a stick! Was it cheaper than buying one?

    • @StanCrafted
      @StanCrafted  5 років тому +1

      Thank you! Yeah, it was cheaper than buying one. Plus, I've wanted to make a Cardigan stick for a long while and this was a good reason to do it :-)
